More on the Oakland A's: thetouchback.c...
The Oakland A’s don’t have any money. At least, that’s what the team wants us to think. They have no cash for players or upgrades to the Oakland Coliseum. And yet, the team seemingly keeps coming up with funds for various other things.
The most recent news had John Fisher willing to forfeit tens of millions of dollars next year in regional television money from NBC Bay Area in order for the A’s to play in Sacramento, a city that doesn’t want them. How could Oakland afford such a move if they are broke?
Let’s also not forget that it was reported that the A’s and the Oakland city government $36M apart on the Howard Terminal infrastructure that would have gotten the project off the ground. In other words, the money the ballclub is potentially forfeiting in TV rights next year could have kept the team in Oakland with a new stadium already under construction.
What?
Of course, this isn’t the only dough Fisher and friends have seemingly found under their couch cushions in recent times. In December last year, they paid Alameda County $45 million as part of a deal that gave the team control over half the Oakland Coliseum. Great deal, Alameda County. Way to totally not screw everyone.
By the way, that $45 million is nearly double the amount the A’s have committed to player salaries in 2024. All this does is highlight the fact the team does, in fact, have money; it just doesn’t want to spend it on things like making the ballclub more competitive or building a stadium in Oakland.
And really, why would you want to build a stadium in Oakland where people will hold you to account when you could just go down to Las Vegas and hand over menial amounts of petty cash to politicians and local officials who will give you a massive blank check to build a mythical facility that has zero renders and no plan for funding.
About The Touchback
#takeitouttothe25
The Touchback is the world’s best sports and culture website…or something like that. The site is the brainchild of Andrew Davis and Cheyenne Hollis, two American expats wanting to bring a different perspective to sports, fantasy, betting and a bunch of other random stuff. You’ll either really like it or really hate it. But it’s worth reading either way.

Excellent job in pointing out the fact that the revenue that they are willing to let go of was the same kind of money that could've bridged the gap in the Howard Terminal project to keep the A's in Oakland.

Imagine a billionaire buying a house for 200 million that now is worth 1 billion dollars. But because the billionaire has let the house fall in to such disrepair he is unable to rent it at market rate. Totally the homeowners fault for pocketing all the previous rent instead of investing some of said rent in maintaining the property. Welcome to the Oakland A's and screw John Fisher.

Regardless what Fisher says, he's made money every year that he's own the team by having a low payroll and the endless revenue sharing checks. He wants to now pocket more profits by the Vegas move. Winning is secondary.

This is true. Those people claiming Oakland is more dangerous than other cities are the ones who want to ignore what's happening in their own backyard. Oakland isn't perfect but no city is.

Others are willing. Shouldn't that opportunity been provided before decided to move? I mean that's reasonable right? Hey billionaires of the Bay, anyone willing to build and keep the team in Oakland? Sure, if nobody stepped up, then yeah, move. BUT we didn't even get that chance. I'm telling you there others who wanted to buy the team to keep here. That should be noted.

I'm not surprised. With declining attendance number and a dilapidated ballpark that's been falling apart with no renovation plan. The whole state of California is losing money. There are multiple reason why the As have to move, and it has nothing to do with money.

@@stewgotz1 get out of your bubble then. Idk what to tell you. Businesses are shutting down because nobody can do anything about the theft and vandalism. Property owners aren't allowed to even defend their own properties. The mayor they elected is just as incompetent and corrupt as Breed slashing vital programs that would clean the area up but instead she doesn't want to do anything about the homeless infecting the area. Team ownership likes to pocket money rather than reinvest it. Then the coliseum is totally in need of renovation which won't happen either. Honestly they should fold the franchise or force the owner to sell and move it. Perhaps they should go back to philly?

I lived in the Oakland area for awhile and while it’s not a “nice” city, its reputation is a bit ridiculous and is a relic from 40-50 years ago. Jack London square, which had been seriously proposed as a new location, is absolutely awesome and visitors would’ve loved that neighborhood.
