I've seen the original Ulster Tartan in The Ulster Museum in Belfast..It is quite dark and it's colours are not nearly as vibrant as the current colours of Ulster Tartan. The wool in the cloth is originally from Donegal.

So glad I found this site and video. My family is Clan O'Hart and as my granny drummed into me "Wear that yellow!" she never said Saffron! Now I am 75 still working a little and its 40c here in Spain. I want to choose a tartan and I guess it will be the "yellow" Saffron or County Meath. I will be layed out in my kilt but have not worn one for 55 years. With your substantial knowledge would you include another tartan? I am anxious to hear your answers. post note; I cannot find a tartan for the other 3 Tara clans. MY granny said "we , The Royal Families",never wore one tartan" Again your help appreciated? A. Irish male dancers wore kilts up to the 70s and 80s in competitions, now its all trousers. Not sure about the GAA wearing them ,maybe very early on when they concentrated on highland game type events, whereas as now they are concerned mostly with indigenous team sports of ireland.

I realised the oldest Irish Tartan was 17th century where's the oldest Scottish Tartan 3rd century so the oldest Scottish Tartan is 1,400 older than the oldest Irish Tartan. The oldest Irish Tartan was proved to be created by a Scottish tailor from the Highlands. But the oldest Scottish Tartan was found in a Pictish settlement just north of Antonines wall. I suspect that tartan historically was more of a Brythonic Fashion (obviously influenced by Hallstatt culture) than a Gaelic Fashion and when the Picts and the Scots Gaels merged with the Picts to form the Kingdom of Alba it became associated with Highland and Gaelic culture but I think it's more of Brythonic thing and that explains it not existing in Ireland, one historian commented on this: "if you presume that Tartan was brought to Scotland through the Scotti tribe of Ireland then you will have to prove that Tartan existed in Ireland before the migration of the Gaels into Scotland" so far there just has been no proof that Tartan was the fashion in Ireland before the Scotti migrated into Scotland, Tartan is more likely to be Pictish Brythonic in origin. We know the Gaels (Scotti) tribe met with the Picts in the Highlands because there was written accounts of this, even the Book of Kells (believed to have been written in Iona) shows draws that are similar to Pictish stones. I truly think that Scots (Irish Gaels) didn't take over Scotland's native tribes but merged with them. I am Scottish and I truly think we are a mongrel nation and recent DNA evidence has proven this. We didn't just originate from just one tribe but multiple tribes.

Since the terra/Murphy tartan is based Pattern wise on the MacLean of Duart Tartan, and the origins of it remains inconclusive (as per the Scottish Registry Report,) Would it be proper to wear it as a MacLean tartan as well as a Murphy Tartan? Or will it remain shrouded in fog. Stay Tuned! Kudos Guys!!!

What about the tartan trews you see in any ancient artwork depicting Celtic warriors. It seems like at least in the medieval period all celts wore patterns like that

Those are actually the Ancient Britons, not the ancient Gaels from Ireland. Mostly they are images of the Picts. The oldest Tartan was found on Pictish settlement north of the Roman wall Antonine.

Depending on what you mean by “ancient times” neither did Scots. The oldest examples of quasi-tartan are simple checks, and these aren’t restricted to Scotland, or even Europe for that matter.

I would say ancient as in any time prior to the 19th century. For example, any Irish families or communities in Ireland aside from Ulster Scots. Is tartan more specifically Scottish and not more Celtic culture in general?

Alexander Khan The 18th century is well within the period of Scottish tartan as regional variations in colours (not quite at the point of having specific family setts). So your question is a good one. My books date to the 1970s and 80s and do not mention anything outside of Scotland (although I really ought to double check this). All that I seem to remember is a bit of check cloth found with Roman coins at Falkirk from about the third century and some reference by Roman authors describing Celts wearing [something like tartan] bright colours and trousers. I shall go have a little dig around. I do recall that the Irish (I think this is mentioned in this video) wore the same long saffron coloured linen shirt that Scots wore (Scoti being the Latin name for a tribe of Irish who moved into Scotland where Picts and Jutes were already established, but eventually giving their name to the whole place).

Thanks! I understand that Celtic culture used to spread throughout Europe, so I am curious why people/groups in Ireland didn't use Tartan pattern, and if there are specific reasons, such as tartan being more specifically Scottish region, and not just an aspect of Celtic culture in general👍🏻. (Maybe those people the Gales defeated when arriving in Ireland used Tartan?)

I should say that I am not a tartan genius, nor do I have a phenomenal memory. I pulled out my dog eared copy of Ian Grimble’s _Scottish Clans & Tartans_ last night and leafed through it looking at the various setts before hopping onto the tartan designer at Scotweb. I was paying more attention to the thread counts than the colours.
