I created an outdated kitchen on purpose. It’s straight out of 1900-1920 with a classic cast iron white sink, a shelf, a 1920s leggy electric range, and two Hoosiers (one gives me an „ appliance garage“). I don’t have to contend with grout because I have no backsplash. It may not be the choice for everyone but my c 1905 house will be for only ONE special someone after I’m done here. ❤

Excellent video! Just a comment on upper cabinets: as a senior adult with arthritis, I can really only reach the upper cabinets. I store items that I don't use regularly in the lower, which I often have to sit to access. Anything on open shelves must be dusted regularly. Designer trends really don't take access or cleaning into account.

Love your perspective! My main kitchen has cabinets painted SW Iron Ore (a deep charcoal grey) with quartz countertops that look like Carrera marble. My basement kitchen has all white cabinets with solid white quartz counters (no veining). I ran the quartz up the wall in both kitchens rather than doing a tile backsplash. My personal goal is to not have any more grout in my house!

Open kitchens !!! Open kitchens must go the way of acid washed jeans. Builders love open kitchens because they take less material and less work for them to build. They can also build homes and apartments with smaller footprints to maximize profits. Now, open kitchens take up half of what once was a family room. There's no separation between relaxing in your family room and cooking in the kitchen but somehow builders, real estate agents, and landlords have convinced renters and homeowners that open kitchens are great. "Open kitchens are safe for families. You can watch your kids while you're cooking." People have bought this BS hook, line, and sinker. ... and don't get me started about windows that don't open... especially in kitchens !!! It's madness.

Upper cabinets out? Shelves in? No, never liked shelves in the kitchen-greasy, dusty, icky. Who wants to dust your dishes every time you grab one? There’s a reason closed shelving (upper cabinets) became popular in the first place about 100 years ago. Wish we could ask our great grandmothers what they think about the open shelving trend. Also, putting microwaves low enough for young children to reach is about the dumbest thing. I just imagine the things, live and not live, that toddlers could decide to try out in the microwave. Gives me shudders.

Well said. Anything ‘classic’: white, farmhouse (so tweakable), tile backsplash , upper cabinets and open concept will never go away. Your house will NEVER appeal to everyone - the trick is to remodel with a LOT of thought and support. Stay away from ‘trends’ that will make your kitchen (or any element of your home) look dated quickly and turn off buyers from the get-go. If you can’t afford something like Cabrera or a solid backsplash, don’t worry about it, instead concern yourself with functionality. And of course, DO NOT MOUNT a microwave over the range….never ever. Also, use different depth drawers wherever possible in your lower cabinets. Lastly, If you actually cook, never try to emulate ‘designer kitchens’, (particularly the mostly dysfunctional celebrity kitchens on AD or other publications), follow your instincts as a cook and owner familiar with your own kitchen space.

My 25 year old kitchen has dead fluorescent 4’ lights, needs 4” can lights. Cabinets need to go to the ceiling and most of mine do. Shaker style cabinet doors is better with minimum cabinet frame showing will not go out of style. Glass cabinet doors only on a few cabinet doors as it is hard to keep those cabinets organized and looking good. Use Quartz or Corian countertops, I have Corian but will buy Quartz next as it looks better and stays nice like Corian. I bought Bosch 800 (aka top) appliances on the internet and installed myself and love them. Saved $10k by doing myself. I need a new backsplash and want an under mount single tub stainless sink with the grooves that allow sliding accessories around. Also need to add lights under my cabinets. Kitchens are so expensive to upgrade. Wish they were less expensive!

A white kitchen never goes out of style and that is what I have had over the past 40 years. I have graduated from a tiled splashbck to wipe clean paint, and continued with laminate worktops after my one dalliance with a stone composite. My current kitchen doesn't have any integrated appliances since I did a light refresh when I moved in because I wasn't sure if I was going to live here long term - turns out I am - so a complete renovation may still happen. Lastly, my kitchen is surrounded by walls and has a door. I like it that way.

What is with the cute but useless range hoods with flat bottoms instead of an umbrella shape, that catches the steam, then vents it all, instead of only catching half of it? And why does no one make the hood reach to the front edge of the stove? The front two burners make steam that misses the vent. And the hoods are usually mounted too high, so that that the steam can travel away at an angle before reaching the height of the hood.

I could have had a nice open wall with no cabinets. Could have looked great with just a hood flanked by a pair of sconces. It would have been beautiful over a proper range. Rule of Thumb: if you have no intention of selling your home within the next 5-10 years, have the kitchen you want. If you’re planning on selling your home within 5 years, don’t go with a current trend. Quality made, white cabinets to the ceiling will not go out of style. The backsplash is an easier, more affordable way to change the look of your kitchen but you cannot go wrong with white subway tile. If a potential buyer is having a problem with white cabinets, a good Realtor will steer the buyer to affordable changes they can make (have you seen what refacing cabinets can do - amazing transformations without the cost of gutting and replacing all the cabinets). Same principle as when a buyer loves the house but hates the wall colors; a good Realtor will remind a buyer that painting is a quick and inexpensive fix & will have a referral to a good painter.

White kitchens will never go completely out of style, nor will white appliances. Upper cabinets are always convenient. Open shelves are impractical, as are marble countertops because of maintenance issues. Over the range microwaves are dangerous for elders, and their ventilation fans are feeble. Grouted tile in a kitchen can be a cleaning problem even when allegedly sealed. Any elaborately-designed kitchen will become dated because its features will reflect the fads of the period. Simple, basic and convenient will never go out of fashion.

If you are discussing American (North American) kitchens then you should carefully review your stock footage. Last tine I checked, homes have neither European continental or UK plugs. This is always, always where KZbin contractors fail daily. European and American kitchens are two different things entirely. Want to talk about bad kitchen items? Let's discuss bulky refrigerators that stick six inches or more beyond the counter depth. Makes a kitchen look small with all that bulk sticking out.
@eattherich92152 ай бұрын
A lot of American kitchen cabinetry comes from the "big box stores". There is often an appliance package with a bulky fridge that does not go with the relatively shallow depths of the cabinetry. Many people who remodel their kitchen, don't have the money to go with integrated appliances or consider a retro style of fridge that would be a better fit.
