Baseball card collecting can be tough sometimes. A player may seem like a great buy based off of historic play and success, but baseball is such a hard sport that things can change quickly. In this video I look at 3 players' baseball cards and see if they are in trouble after a rough few years.

If you don't think Stryker also educates, then you're sorely mistaken. I agree Scottie is knowledgeable but tbh there are too many influencer type cards as it is. Gary Vee was a cardboard carpetbagger and got his own a few years ago.

No. Aaron Judge is an iconic player. He plays defense and hits at a higher level than anybody else on the Yankees team.... including Juan Soto. Judge is on track to hit 50+ home runs twice more. He's not nearly as touchy to be injured as Stanton. Stanton is a straight up pussy, but he sure can hit a baseball really freaking hard when he makes contact.

Scottie, kind of funny how you mentioned the old school methods of HOF selection. I enjoy your modern view and how you guys use all the newest measurements to select candidates, or at least their probability of entering the Hall. I take a snapshot look at five categories and want to see a player have at least three of them. A know it’s just a preliminary glance and not a great standard to adhere to. In my short sighted world you would need to meet or exceed in the following: Runs-1100, RBIs-1200, Hits- 2200, BA-.300, WAR-50. I know, I know this doesn’t fit every position player, but I think that every player should have a high and similar caliber of defensive skills. Ozzie Smith’s best year shows he only had 7 errors and his worse year he had 25. So how many of those errors resulted in a game loss? IDK, but I think very few for each year. Again every player should have really good defensive skills just to play in MLB. The HOF requires greatness, not perfection. Please feel free to discuss this further if you choose, no offense taken. I enjoy your shows and glean lots of player decisions based on your information. Thanks Scottie

All 3 players have not been hobby relevant for more than a few years now, and in the case of Semien, never (though he's probably the most consistent player of the 3). Its pretty hard to impossible for a player to regain their hobby relevance after more than a couple years of obscurity. Nice little tidbits though and stat summaries as usual!

A weird stat that somehow benefits Giancarlo. Of the 500 Club, 8 players needed less than 10,000 Plate Appearances to get there. Giancarlo’s gotten 402 in 6437. So he needs 98 HR and can use 3563 PAs to get there. 400 PAs a year….. a Homer every 15 PAs, it’s an agonising 4 years to get there (Age-37 season) and I don’t think he does it in a Yankees uniform by the end of it, even with the Marlins covering a good chunk of the salary by then.

Didn't realize that about Semien. Will definitely keep an eye on that guy. He may be a late bloomer who knocks out 3 or 4 more years of 6+ WAR. He's had 7+ the past 2 out of 3 years. I mean look at Goldschmidt winning MVP in 2022 in his age 34 year. Goldy actually has had more 30+ HR seasons AFTER turning 30 (4) than prior (3). Would make an interesting video - late bloomers who weren't on the radar, suddenly in semi questionable HoF conversation after having several good seasons after turning 30.
@rsuriyop

Adrian Beltre, David Ortiz, and Phil Neikro would lead that list of late bloomers making it into the HOF. If they could do it, then it’s certainly possible for Marcus Semien.

Stanton is probably the best bet out of the three. He should hit 500 hrs which will solidify his value as greater than 0 in the hobby. Yelich and Semien are lost causes unless they somehow have multiple MVP caliber seasons in their mid/late 30's. You either have to have high WAR, BA, or HR's to be relevant now a days. Gold gloves are useless, OPS+ is semi useless, 3k hits is becoming less relevant, and even BA is a weak case unless you are part of a winning franchise or have other accolades
