We asked our Mexican Moms how well they know Mexican foods and items! 😂🇲🇽
Did any of these surprise you?
SUBSCRIBE TO MAMAH FOR NEW VIDEO EVERY WEEK!
Thanks to our sister channel TheCrazyGorilla for joining us ❤️
kzbin.info
We asked our Mexican moms play a game of 'Is it Mexican?' (with the help of TheCrazyGorilla) where they have to guess if a food, thing, or place, is originally made in Mexico or if it's a product just associated with our community! Some of the history of these things may surprise you! Moms had to guess the history of horchata, nachos, Japanese style peanuts, Chipotle, enchiladas, flour tortillas, fajitas and even piñatas! Did you know that Chipotle Mexican grill... never mind - you'll just have to watch the video!

The flour tortilla came after the Spanish brought wheat but originally flour tortillas were not part of the Mexican diet when we were introduced to flour we decided to make tortillas thus the flour tortilla came to be. I love flour tortillas with mole it tastes so good. But I always knew it was MADE in Mexico since I'm from the North. The flour tortillas are especially used for burritos!!!

The piñata in Mexico was invented by Aztecs to celebrate the birthday of their gods, they would make clay pots and decorate, paint them really nice and fill them with fruit/snacks and hang them to break them. The Europeans took the idea of a piñata from the Chinese and took it back to Europe and called it piñata to celebrate catholic holidays. When the Europeans came to Mexico and conquered, the piñata evolved mixing Aztec tradition of celebrating birthdays and Europeans celebrating catholic holidays by making the Mexican piñata 🪅 celebrates both birthdays and Christmas/ catholic holidays.

As the (well-supported) story goes, Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya originally made them for some US military wives who came into his restaurant late in the day in Piedras Negras, Mexico. The kitchen had already closed, but Anaya kindly offered to throw together something from the day's leftover tortillas. He ripped and fried them up, covered them with cheddar and jalapeño slices, warmed them in the oven, and served them up as Nacho's Especiales. The women loved them and they were added to the restaurant's regular menu.

@@jeffmorse645 They definitely did. When the etymologists were researching the origin of the term Nachos, they found there was even an nachos recipe found in an old cookbook from Eagle Pass, which is where the customers were from. Apparently one of them loved the dish enough to submit a recipe for it a year or two after Ignacio Anaya served it to them.

I feel like Horchata is mexican like yes it was brought by colonialism, but a lot of things tht were brought through colonialism come together to make its current culture. Is it indigenous? no. But I think that colonialism+ cultural exchange has added and changed many things in many ethnic groups across the world. I don't think that makes it any less authentic. Just my hot-take.

The horchata does have African origins but the version us Mexicans make is a new drink, it changed very much in Mexico not barely. The main ingredient that improved the horchata was adding vanilla a Mexican native ingredient and we added milk ( other dairy products) to it instead of water and the rice is better then the peanuts. The horchata really evolved in Mexico it’s a drink we inherited from our ancestors from Spain and yes even from Africa and we improved it in México it is a Mexican drink.

fun fact: Pinatas is a container, often made of papier-mâché, pottery, or cloth, that is decorated, filled with candy, and then broken as part of a celebration. Piñatas are commonly associated with Mexico. The idea of breaking a container filled with treats came to Europe in the 14th century, where the name, from the Italian pignatta, was introduced. The Spanish brought the European tradition to Mexico, although there were similar traditions in Mesoamerica, such as the Aztecs' honoring the birthday of the god Huītzilōpōchtli in mid-December. According to local records, the Mexican piñata tradition began in the town of Acolman, just north of Mexico City, where piñatas were introduced for catechism purposes as well as to co-opt the Huitzilopochtli ceremony. Today, the piñata is still part of Mexican culture, the cultures of other countries in Latin America, as well as the United States, but it has mostly lost its religious character.
