Haven’t bought as many 4k releases this year so I appreciate the reminder of what has come and gone this year. Loved Vol 1 of the Hitchcock set so Vol 2 will have to be added soon. In addition, Last Night in Soho is another I would recommend as a standout release for me 5is year. Thanks as always 👍

Love your comments about these classics. No disagreements here! I have had a lifelong "crush" on Hitchcock's "Saboteur" because of its World War II overtones. I do understand it would not be everybody's "cup of tea", but there is so much in this movie that is so enticing about this movie. There is an innocence in this movie where there is a certain lack of ill will towards the spies, "because after all, they were Americans." The Statue of Liberty sequence is original, unique, and unforgettable. Great acting! Robert Cummings never came over so well!

It certainly is stunningly beautiful on Blu Ray, although I understand quite a lot of it was filmed in studio rather than on location in Vermont. The movie has some nice autumn vibes with all that colourful foliage.

For the first time in your videos (which I love btw) I have seen all of the movies, even The Proposition, and even own some of the 4K's But the new Hitchcock set to me was an eye opener (thank you) mainly because it includes my all-time favorite, Saboteur. And you are so right, all of the films are great. I've got to order that set, although I wish Frenzy was in it.

I don't have Singing in the Rain, Godfather trilogy or the 2nd Hitchcock set yet (though all 3 are high on my "buy these soon" list) but I have all the other ones you mentioned here (yes including the The Proposition though I'm in Australia and therefore probably more familiar with the film than those who are not aware of local film industry). I agree with your choices....all very very good ones. All look and sound amazing and benefit from the 4k format and HDR.

Thanks bro. Subscribed to your channel. Great recommendations and I love indie movies and this movie The Proposition looks like it. It looks dark and gritty. Will definitely buy on 4k. I also have the same Drive limited edition and it looks stunning. I love the fact that you didn't pick all blockbuster movies but you paid attention to quality of the subject matter as well which most reviewers don't and if you like Godfather I advise you to buy the collectors edition. Its big and very beautiful and now they are releasing individual steelbooks too.

You're opinion of the 3rd godfather movie lines up with my own personal experiences. Everyone hated on the all female Ghostbusters movie but since I had never seen Ghostbuster 1 & 2 at that time i thought it was rather enjoyable. Even the Indiana Jones with Shia Labeouf since I hadn't seen any other Indiana Jones. I also consider Episode 1-3 of Star Wars my favorite because those were the star wars that were being released when I grew up and the older movies felt stale, even though I can recognize they were revolutionary for their time.

I'm holding off on the Hitchcock 4K sets (I've heard there are some video issues with them too) because I have a 14-film DVD set called the Masterpiece Collection. So far these two volumes of the 4K collection have constituted 9 of those 14 films and I want to wait and see if there will be a Vol. 3 that contains the remaining five (even if I think they shouldn't bother with Topaz 😂)

Great selection, love Proposition. It’s a wonderful movie. Would love the 4K version. I have Alf2 and because I’m moving home, not had the chance to se them. I’m a huge fan of Hitch and agree they are all wonderful except Family Plot, which is merely very good. Thanks Elliot.

Got them all Elliot totally agree The Godfather trilogy looks superb lovingly restored. Got to give a shout out to Criterion 4ks of Double Indemnity and Shaft. Can’t forget the superb 4k Kino Lorber releases with Some like it Hot and Touch of Evil looking amazing.

I have all of your picks except The Proposition. I didn't even know it was available in 4K! I haven't seen that movie since it was released, but my recollection is that it's exceptional. Sometimes I think I've seen too many movies over the years! If I don't revisit them, they tend to fade away from memory. Anyway, I can't disagree with any of your selections.

The only Hitchcock films I've seen are Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, North By Northwest and The Birds. Can't wait to dive into this second box set once I get it and what a better way to experience them for the first time than in 4k!

I have the Alfred Hitchcock Ultimate Collection blu ray and I am still thinking if all Hitchcock films deserve to be upgraded to 4k!

Hey Elliot, help me understand - when I watched Singing in the Rain, my enjoyment was severely hindered by the feeling the film was ‘punching down’ by making its villain a woman who wasn’t blessed with a nice voice. In a film about the transition from silents to talkies, it seemed to take a very unsympathetic view to those actors who were ‘left behind’ (very opposite to something like Sunset Boulevard). This has always made it hard for me to register it as an ‘uplifting’ film. Thoughts?

So much to choose from! My favourites are made by Mike Leigh, Alfred Hitchcock, Powell and Pressburger. More modern filmmakers I like are Guy Ritchie, Danny Boyle, Peter Strickland. Oh and David Lean - maybe Lawrence of Arabia is the greatest British film of all time!

The Godfather is not well restored in 4K. It looks well for some parts but they messed up a lot of scenes with the color and the DNR.

Bingo! Not the worst film ever, but a terrible one nonetheless. It’s so bad it cheapens the trilogy. Everything about it suffers by comparison to the other two films. And then you have Sofia Coppola in one of the most laughably bad performances ever. Adding insult to injury, the great Goodfellas came out the same year a few months prior and well you can judge for yourself.

"The Proposition" is one of the worst films I've ever seen. I vividly recall sitting in the theatre in anger at how bad it was when it was released. What a monumental disappointment it was, especially given the critical praise at the time of release. And "Godfather 3" was horrendous on a scale that absolutely diminishes the first two, which is why I will only purchase them separately. No Godfather boxset should ever include it. And you are incorrect in saying it isn't as good because it is compared to the first two-no, no, no. It is terrible all on its own, and there is no justifying any reason why it's not out of print. A mercy killing is indeed long overdue for this piece of unadulterated garbage.
