Since you've asked, unequivocally...YES! Since 2011 I have consistently been designing pedalboards that could cover, what I consider, the 'core amp tones'...those being Fender, Vox and Marshall. I've owned/tried all the amp modelers and their particular versions that were and are currently on the market and 80 percent of the tube-based preamp pedals as well. Some units were more extensive than others but it was usually always the same...just a different flavor, took time to dial-in your tone but...never seemed to be exactly what I'd hoped it would be tone-wise and always left me feeling there was something better. I recently bought and use every Sunday at church the latest/greatest all-in-one device and thought...finally that's the one! However, I was then introduced to the UA Dream '65 and all I can say is...this is what I've wanted for years in all the other devices I purchased! Just pure TONE that accurately replicates the amp circuit it's designed after. I've since bought the Ruby '63 and it is just as good as the Dream '65. When you can just play through a device and not have to constantly feel the need to compare it to a real amp but instead can just enjoy the experience, nuance and feel of the real deal...that's where it's at - the UA amp pedals are currently the best modelling available right now;)

Bought the ruby and I really like it better than my helix and my ACS1. And those are both great and have their place but the ruby Sounds/feels like it has that amp “fullness.” And the edge of breakup sound is better than any other digital device I’ve heard or played. Having owned an old AC30 before I can attest it’s pretty close. Definitely worth the buy

Much like early Marshall's, the way these were often run is "all knobs at ten" to get dirt out of them. Even the tone knob adds grit, which is consistent with pushing early tweeds into intensity.

Digital amps and pedals has come a long way and obviously has their place in specific situations (touring, rehearsal, late-night jamming etc.) They still doesn’t feel nor sounds as good as a regular tube amp though. You can do well with them over time, but if you later decide to go old-school and play an old amp, it won’t take you more than a couple of minutes to realize what you’ve been missing out on. Aside from that point UAD still rocks!!!

I would love to see a side-by-side comparison between these and the Strymon Iridium and Walrus ACS1. I built my pedalboard to be multi-purpose for electric guitar and bass, so a huge upside to the Strymon Iridium is the fact that you can load your own IR’s and run just the cab sim without the amp sim. I use an Ampeg 8x10 cab sim only when I play bass.

They all sound pretty darn good, but... maybe I'm spoiled, but the idea of buying a $400 pedal just for one single amp sim, when I can get Pod GO or HX Stomp for just a bit more, and have infinitely more functionality, is honestly ridiculous to me. Not a pedal for me, it seems :)

Same with my ACS1. Although I pretty much only use the Fender, I always have access to the Marshall and the Vox at my fingertips. For the same price. @@rogerYT69 I definitely prefer the AC30 sounds in the Ruby - though I will say the Brilliant channel in the Ruby is better than the Normal channel (whereas I prefer the Normal channel on my real AC15). But the biggest thing is how easy it is to dial in. I feel like the Helix has decent tones, but I have to work hard to get there and I don't love the interface (even the HX Edit interface). It just feels far away from the interface of a real amp, which is more my thing. With the Ruby, it's good tones at most any setting.
@rogerYT69
@rogerYT69 2 жыл бұрын
@@poesybeat thanks for your comment, it helps me with my decision. i like the helix too but you are absolutely right that the settings don't always react like a real amp. finding a really good sound sometimes take quite a bit of time. i prefer to play guitar than spend hours turning knobs ;) i'm curious and will probably give the ruby a chance ;) one last question; does the ruby like pedals in general? ...thx and greetings from switzerland ;)
@poesybeat
@poesybeat 2 жыл бұрын
@@rogerYT69 So for context, before I bought the Helix I bought a Strymon Iridium but returned it -- because I hated how it took pedals. I run a Timmy, Archer (Klon), and a Wampler Pantheon in front of my real AC15, and they sound great in any combination (1, 2, or all 3), but they sounded not good into the Iridium. The Ruby on the other hand seems to react to those three pedals pretty much the same as my real AC15 and sounds great. Good luck! (and greetings from Chicago)

Plugging into a tube amp and playing it in the same room is a very different experience as having the amp in another room, mic’ing it, and listening to the mics through studio monitors. All the digital modeling platforms emulate the mic’d amp situation, not the experience of standing next to it and playing it.

I got the Joyo American Sound at first and then the Tech21 Blonde which is the pedal that the Joyo AS replicates. Both are similar in sound to the Dream (i mean, they have that fenderish sound), but the Dream stands out -bIG stand out- in terms of harmonic richness and tube feel. Also you get that spring reverb and tremolo effect. The Dream really feels like a tube amp just there, which also makes it a better pedal platform if you have other pedals. According to your question, the central issue is whether or not the x10 price is justified based on how much you get out of the pedal. Do you play a lot? Do yo gig? Do you record? You can give it a try at a music store anyway and decide.

Can I use it as an overdrive, such as revival drive? I assume it is an amp sim like Iridium, right?

This is an amp in a pedal situation. I’m sure you could but that’s not what it is designed to do.

I'm gonna say it. It still sounds like a DI box. I've owned one from a different manufacturer and it's a no go for me.

@@worshiptutorials I personally think all the ones I’ve heard of in person and online don’t sound good. The only ones I’ve heard that sound good are the helix, Axe effects and kemper . I don’t wanna drop that much on it. But I know there had to be one out there that sounds great

It’s an emulation of a vintage Celestion Alnico Silver. I have one (from the mid 60’s) in my Vox AC30 cab. They’re great sounding speakers with a different midrange character than the Alnico Blue.
