Those are really interesting binoculars - especially that separation and integration into a telescope. At the right price point, I'd buy them just for their size and convenience. Thanks for sharing.

This is a really interesting instrument. Many will think 4x is useless but it's not. Advantages are: very stable image, wide true field of view, bright image for the size and long depth of field. So when you say: "While they have the edge on portability, binoculars of this size sacrifice light-gathering power because of the limited aperture of the objective lenses", the sacrifice of light gathering power in this case is a drawback only for astronomy. With only 4x this binocular has the same image brightness as a 8x40 and 10x50 optics. No, I don't mean it will replace a traditional birding binocular, but I think it's a useful complement. Just a note: with the tubes lined up as a telescope the magnification will be 16x.

I tried a bunch of high end compacts and ended up thinking the Victory 8x25 was the most useable (not necessarily nicest) view so I bought that and it is quite good though not earth shattering as per the raving of many when it comes to these things. I also bought this 4x20 Pentax and love the rich colour, contrast, brightness and sharpness so it is one of my favourite bins even though I have many others of higher magnification. It's more for scenic viewing enjoyment and it is enjoyable to me. I do find it strange though that even though it is low magnification the focus set for infinity means anything closer than about 8 meters is out of focus and if you focus closer then the close range dof is very narrow and nothing in the distance or nearer is then in focus. Often I need too focus down with one side just to look at something up close & even then 4x mag is not much for this but still I do like this binocular even with all it's limitations. It's definitely not a stress on the eyes like other compacts due to it's large exit pupils. The telescope is quite poor but still something that could be of use in an emergency if there is enough light. Anyway it's gets my approval for what it is and I do enjoy it though on occasion the low mag and individual focus can be frustrating so with this bin you can't have it all but you can definitely have something very good.

I recommend trying a challenge: photographing passerines in flight overhead! Both of your cameras are perfect for this, as are the lenses.

Anyone know of any Bino brands that don’t glamorise trophy hunting? I don’t have a problem with subsistence hunting but trophy hunting is a whole another ball game.

Celestron, they started as and are still a Telescope company. It was then very easy for them to make binoculars. I really like their binocular line.

Probably good for constellation sweeping in astronomy as they should have a wide field of view yet a bit more magnification than say my Helio 2x40 Starfield binoculars.

After using the Canon IS. Its just hard for me to use any other non stabilized binoculars. Not cheap but worth every penny to me.

Today i got the opportunity to get these in my hands. First impression - you must not apply any force when holding them, or they get out of collimation. Did not feel sturdy at all. Like, in this price range, not worth the money. And the lack of nitrogen filling is a huge no no.

While Pentax is now supporting you, I cannot see how a 4X 20mm objective is a good birding binocular as 8X and 10X tend to be more traditional. I guess you should be careful not to lead potential birders astray on recommendation on what they should be purchasing as you say, they are not a a cheap accessory.

There are situations where the 4x with the smaller objective lenses do well because the magnification is low to begin with. Besides it's all a personal preference. There are people who don't like anything in higher magnifications at all and are exclusively low mag.
