Greta Van Fleet were one of the first bands I reviewed on my channel. I was worried that they were a little one-dimensional, so I'm excited to listen to their latest song to see how or if they've evolved.
Today I'm reacting to the song Meeting the Master.
You can watch it here: • Greta Van Fleet - Meet...

I actually agree with this. Growing up with a father who is a professional musician I was exposed to a lot of different styles and genres. Greta Van Fleet brings back what people loved about classic rock. They do sound like Led Zeppelin but that's fine because honestly????? Who cares? Good music is good music and unfortunately music has suffered so much in the last 10-15 years from being generic and over produced auto tuned crap. I can't remember an album I was excited about during that time. Now, I want to hear more music like Greta and am excited to see what this resurgence brings.

The first time I saw them live, 5 years ago, was at a small venue in Dallas and Josh struggled to get through a 75 min set. His voice started giving out a bit before the end of the regular set, so the encore was a 20 min. jam of Lover, Leaver, Taker, Believer and Jake carried most of it. Now Josh can get through a 2.5 hour set and still sound strong and crystal clear. Kudos to that kid for all the hard work and sacrifices he's had to make to take proper care of his voice, so that we can all get goosebumps just listening to him.

As a big rock n’ roll (and Led Zeppelin) fan, I went to their concert in Frankfurt last year in the middle of “The Battle at The Garden’s Gate” tour. I can't still believe having witnessed such rich live rock music in 2022. My whole life, I thought this kind of live rock concert belonged just to the ’70s and ’80s. Jake’s improvisations of each song on the album were magnificent, specially The Weight of Dreams and Broken Bells. I don't care which band they try to be like or get inspired by, but the existence of bands like theirs is crucial nowadays so that new generations can understand how Rock music tastes among all of this nonsense music that has occupied the mainstream now.

So glad that as an articulate musician of credibility you see the development and the talent of all 4 members of this band! I’ve been disappointed in the dismissive opinions of other rock music fans of a certain (my) generation, who couldn’t get past comparisons to the bands we loved and give them any respect or appreciation while, ironically, being grateful they were making the kind of music we all want to hear! While never tired of breaking out my old Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, or Rush albums I’m hoping this music will grab a new generation. I can smile at the outfits and the swords- they’re young and romantic and idealistic like we all were. No auto tune, no mash-ups, no excuses. Just their own songwriting, talent, technique, and power. Yes is a good one. I never drew that comparison until now that you say that I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about the acoustic textures, mixed with hard-edged rock and roll and progressive rhythms. That’s all stuff that we think is really fun. People need to check out their LIVE renditions of their songs and hear just how amazing GVF really are. Josh's vocals are just incredible and why Elizabeth of The Charismatic Voice loved their song "Heat Above". After listening to my daughters new album from Melanie Martinez (Portals), you can tell her vocals are very limited and the songs sound very child like. We need more bands like GVF that can sing and play live so good that you desperately want to see them live.

Thanks for taking my suggestion Justin! You're the best! They have evolved into a more Yes-like style. I'm 67 years old and lived the 70;s dream. Played in a band for 7 years and got so close to the big time it still hurts. We at least were fortunate enough to front a few popular bands in Dallas and New Orleans we even played a Colosseum with 4000+ people and it is something that never gets out of your blood. I relate with Greta Van Fleet immensely and when I first heard them I was not impressed but giving them a second ear tweaked my interest. Then the live videos started and they plated the Red Rocks stage, they killed it, fantastic. With their experience now they have broken through that glass barrier! They command the stage and their music has elevated unbelievably!! The Master is an incredible piece of work as is the album, I am so glad to see a young working garage band defy the odds. That’s sick and it opens up the question who did they hire to play in studio with them? Someone has got to do rhythm guitar for Jake. In this song there are at least 3 guitars at some point. I also wonder if they hired someone to do Sam’s parts on keys while he is on bass and other way around. One thing is to play the bass pedals live while he is on keys, another is on the record.

How is “sounding too much like Led Zeppelin” a criticism? It’s not like Zeppelin are still putting out new music. What’s wrong with Greta Van Fleet picking up where they left off? They’re essentially filling a hole in the market. Besides, just because one band makes a “sound” iconic, it doesn’t mean that other bands can’t follow suit. Nor does it mean that they are taking away from the original band, particularly when that band is a household name. If anything GVF is just exposing Zep’s style of music to a new and wider audience and that can’t be a bad thing. 🥰

We went to their concert in Fort Lauderdale last month. Being a big fan, I was actually nervous. Could they perform? Could they keep up with a album that I thought was heavily produced? Could he come close to singing as great live as the recording? Could Jake hold the audience as a one man guitarist? Was his brother on the organ able to make it sound like the orchestra that we all hear? Totally blown away. Live absolutely destroys the albums. We found ourselves laughing as hard as we have ever laughed because we couldn’t believe what we were experiencing. They were far more than we could have imagined, and we are old (48). We left feeling so lucky to witness their show, that’s the truth. We were astonished. We have to go again, we both (wife and I) felt we spent the entire time being so amazed we lost the real reason of being there, and that was the music and not just their talent. It’s a must see show and a performance that is mind blowing.

I've loved all of their stuff from the day I first heard Highway Tune not long after it was released. Honestly, it was suggested to me as "have you heard of this band, they sound like Led Zeppelin!". I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be excited by that. A lot of bands sound like other bands and have consistently been compared to them throughout their careers, including Justin's. It's not a bad thing, it's just how our musical ears are inclined to work. I think they've evolved massively and in an incredible way. Their third record is so slept on in the UK because people are over the buzz of them being this Led Zep junior thing, but it's fucking incredible. There are some huge, ambitious and glorious soundscapes throughout the record as well as some incredibly rocking tracks. The use of the keys has given it such a massive sound, and the singing is fucking incredible. I'd definitely go so far as to say that he has way more tricks up his sleeve than Plant ever did in Zep (whom I also love to bits). I think there's also so much more to enjoying a band than what comes through your earholes. They're such charming and funny individuals, and you get the sense that they have a real feeling of brotherhood and fun between them. As a kid growing up listening to them, we all wanted to be these guys, and/or sleep with them. It's been so exciting to be a fan as they've evolved, and they are absolutely one of my favorite bands, no question about it. Can't wait for Starcatcher!

They are perhaps the only new band that is real blues based rock. You no longer hear guitar solos and a lot of songs today that chart are hip-hop based and don’t even have a chorus or hook. And are only 3 to 3 1/2 minutes long. I found out about the band 5 years ago when watching an interview with Robert Plant. He was asked if there was anything new he liked He said there is a band in Michigan called Greta Van Fleet that he thought was good. He did not think they were ripping off Zeppelin. He said the kid’s voice is the kid’s voice. It sounds similar to mine, but he thought they were the real deal. Plant said that they were being criticized about sounding like Led Zeppelin so much that when they were asked about their influences they said Boston, Aerosmith and others but left out Led Zeppelin. Plant seemed it was ridiculous not to mention Zeppelin but he understood they were trying to escape the criticism of cover band and being compared to one of the greatest bands of an era even before they released a full LP. I then saw a live performance of them covering a Zepplin tune-that is when I noticed a significant difference in the voices. The cover was just ok, I was expecting something great. Josh has his own voice and own style. For instanceI Josh’s yodeling his voice, at times aggressive distortion during a Plant-like scream that Plant didn’t use. I no longer think the voices are as similar as many say. But prime Plant could sing Greta Van Fleet, but Josh couldn’t sing for Zeppelin. In another more recent interview Plant again commented on them saying they were like Zeppelin 1.0. I think he meant 2.0. But it was not a negative comment, he was saying that they were the rebirth of good blues based rock for a new generation. I think the music itself has Zeppelin influence-some songs more than others, but in general they fit in with all the hard rock (non metal) bands of the 1970s.

I tried to get tickets for their 2022 show at the Manchester Apollo, which holds about 3,500. Unfortunately, they sold out both shows real quick so I couldn't go. In 2023 they announced a date at the Manchester Arena, which holds about 22,000. I couldn't believe they'd gathered enough interest to sell out an arena. I was really happy because after the Led Zeppelin comparisons I thought it would hold them back. Me and my friend went and we spent the entire 2 hours mesmerised by the entire thing. It was so refreshing to go to a gig that went back to the basics - guitar, bass, drums, vocal, pyrotechnics, over-the-top wardrobe, guitar AND drum solos. It was everything you'd want from a rock concert.

I saw them live and it totally ruined their streaming releases for me. Age of machine was an out of this world experience and the transcendence in listening to heat above and light my love in concert filled me with pure hope. I know Zep would also weave new melodies into their songs, and surely there is a heavy influence on their techniques, but these beautiful young lads are standing on the shoulders of the giants, not the shadows. Each member brings an intimate relationship with their instrument to their ensemble and that just can't be explained by treating them as a tribute band. Let's be honest, shall we? Josh Kiszka's voice is better than Robert Plants'. Geddy Lee once said that originality is pulling inspiration from so many different ppl and styles of music that u can’t see one specific derivative thing. As a fan, it makes me proud to see them attempting this and I can’t wait for the new album. P.S. ur reviews are the only ones I watch bc you’re really good at objective criticism. Much love 🤍

The singer sounds a lot more of a cross between Jon Anderson and Geddy Lee than anything like Robert Plant. Great passion is key!

I grew up in the 60's - great music, great concerts. That being said I think this singer has a fabulous voice, one of the best I've heard in a long time. Kind of reminds me of Jon Anderson of Yes fame.

This seems to be less Led Zeppelin, and maybe some Yes, and some Rush thrown in there. Josh's voice is amazing, and the rest of the band are very good. They are just a well rounded very talented band! This song is everything!

Fame is a tricky thing . GVF certainly sounded like LZ when they started . That got them a lot of fans and haters too . But with over 90 million views for their Highway Song , it’s safe to assume there are more fans than haters . Then the snooty Pitchfork gave them a very low lopsided rating for their first bonafide album which enraged the fans . Their next two albums proved that they have many influences ( LZ , Rush , Queen and others but developed their own GVF sound . Now the haters are mostly silent and the band will earn its place in history soon . That’s quite tough since Rock as a popular genre is no longer on the top

They are just incredible and it's very exciting to see what they do next. Meeting the Master blew me away the first time I heard it and is easily one of my fave songs, love it.

I dont know if you have, but if you get a chance to check out Broken Bells (the candle light sessions) it really showcases their musicianship and Josh's vocals. Very beautiful with a gorgeous little guitar solo. Very different than the highway tune vibes.

I first heard High Tune on the radio and thought it was a lost Zeppelin tune, but loved it from the get-go. The first album def had a lot of the Zep influence (and early Rush) but I enjoyed it. Loved most of the songs. They have evolved with each album and GVF is one of my favorite bands - period. I don't care that people want to hate on them, I love their music and am thankful for them. Saw them live recently and, although I didn't like their set list and thought they should have done more than 14 songs in two hours, they were great live and the show was awesome. Meeting the Masters instantly shot to one of my top 5 GVF tunes.

Its refreshing to hear old style recording, I cant say how it was done but nothing seems over compressed like todays music.

Tribute bands play the Artist their mimicking music. End if Story! These guy's frickin Rock. Its their songs, their style. Haters Get over it! I lived the late 60s and 70s. Name one band that never borrowed a riff, a theme. These guys rock and they have single handedly made real Rock and Roll Relevant again. After the barrage of hair bands in the 80s, what a welcome to hear GVF. YOU REALIZE JIMMY PAGE DOESNT HOLD A PATENT ON 12 STRING GUITARS! Thei drumming isnt like John Bonham! Gee, bass doesn't sound like John Paul Jones and Josh's tamber, high range is nothing like Robert Plant.

I agree they derived some of their stuff from previous artists (like all artists do, of course), but they are developing and are already unique, as you pointed out. I like to think of them as the Hobbits of Rock and Roll. They also have a charming personal story. Probably number one band right now, I'd say.

Personally, it never bothered me that they sounded like Led Zepplin. I mean, Zepplin wasn't using the sound anymore and it's a good sound.
