I hate when people disregard club rugby. I remember when people were saying the Champions cup final was *almost* test quality. Like nah bro, it *is* test quality! Both Toulouse and Leinster could beat the likes of Scotland, Wales, Australia etc... The Toulouse team is literally just the french national team plus internationals from nations like Argentina, Tonga, Scotland etc... Anyway love this project keep it up!

The Champions Cup final was in the top 2 or 3 rugby games played by anyone last year, international or club. No question. Perhaps the best of all when you take into account the sheer length and drama of it. Only really the RWC final came close.

Thanks for mentioning Jauzion. A hell of a quiet monster, he embodied perfectly the culture of Toulouse "hand's play, Toulouse's play". This '05 team with Heymans, Clerc, Poitrenaud, Fritz, Elissalde, Bru, Gareth Thomas, Pelous, Maka etc... could be a competitor for the title of Best Toulouse team ever. Or the 09/10 with still a lot of the squad above (Jauzion, Elissalde, Fritz etc...) but addind Dusautoir, Kelleher, Nyanga, Michalak, Servat, Picamoles and Albacete etc... Quite a history of a team, some kind of the Barça of Rugby. Amazing formation and young recruitment, with a clear game identity passing from generation of players to the next one, and with the luxury to fulfill your few needs left with top of the world international players.

I dont agree with Joe about the Toulouse identity. The essence of Toulouse is not "winning" which is by the way is every club goal, but 'jeu à la toulousaine" or "jeu de mains, jeu de toulousains". The flare culture, that's why they are so popular in France; they win, ok, but with flare, perfect. So the question, is maybe not is Toulouse the best, but the most beautifull, and if you consider aesthetic (in the flare way) as much as victory, you have the answer. All the young lads who dream coming at Toulouse don't only dream about victory but dream to play in this flare culture. They are leader is that way and lead the whole french rugby culture for decade in the path of Villepreux and friends.
@moebiusmoebius90412 ай бұрын
As a Toulouse fan, I agree with you on the essence of Toulouse as a whole club. But in the flagship team, players who can reach it are so obsessed by winning, by leaving their mark on the club history (and thus on the world rugby history ;-) ), that I think winning is part of the essence of Stade Toulousain. But of course the roots are still Bru and Villepreux concepts.
@Zveebo2 ай бұрын
I completely agree with you 99% of the time, and that is absolutely the essence of the club. BUT the final against Leinster was an example of Toulouse showing just how much they value winning in itself when it comes down to it. That was *not* an example of playing joué rugby - it was an exceptional piece of hard nosed defensive play worthy of the best test teams on the planet. It was playing unlike anything Toulouse normally play, and showing they can do that too. Not to say there weren’t moments of flair in there - but that was a game in which they completely flipped the switch and played a game 100% to win, doing whatever it takes.

@@Thudsrayz Yeah, that’s a really interesting one. Definitely LaR denied Toulouse the ability to fully play their usual game very effectively (at least until they lost so many players). But I felt it was a bit different in unlike v Leinster, I didn’t feel they adopted a totally different approach - they were still trying to play ‘le jeu Toulousain’: they just were struggling to do it because LaR were so effective. Against Leinster it seemed a much more conscious choice.

I think the current team would absolutely run SA very close, and that’s properly insane for a club side. And what’s most incredible is that the core of the current Toulouse team are all around the same age - 26 or 27 or so. It’s entirely possible they can keep this squad together for years to come.

The depth of the bench is not about the budget, it is the rugby school and how immensely popular the game is in the south of France which brings talent like a conveyor belt. AND it is because the best players want to play there regardless of possible more lucrative contracts because of the prospect of titles and trophies. Playing for Toulouse almost guarantees the silverware.

4xRWC titles of which 2 are back to back suggests you are wrong. 2019 final win had a significant margin (biggest in a final) against late tournament favourites England. In 2023 South Africa had the hardest qualification path that will ever be seen in RWC history and future and still prevailed. World Rugby changed the format to avoid this from ever happening again which speaks volumes. I think the money side of things is a bit overblown. They rarely pay the highest salaries and hardly go on hiring sprees: this summer they’ve recruited almost no one. And last season their only big hire over the season was Kinghorn, and he was hardly some hugely expensive superstar. His transfer was all paid for by getting rid of Jaminet for a very nice price - as one person put it recently: selling a Fiat 500 for the price of a Lamborghini, and using it to buy a Lamborghini for the price of a Fiat 500 😅
