For as long as he has been aware of his sexuality, Torchwood's John Barrowman has been convinced that he was born gay. As John battles with a battery of brain tests designed to see how straight and gay brains differ, can scientists prove his theory that a person's sexuality isn't a choice? Interesting clip from the BBC science series Making of Me. Watch more high quality videos on the new BBC Worldwide KZbin channel here: / bbcworldwide

It's not discomfort, well not in that sense. It's more that he's not quite sure how to react because he can clearly see John was effected by the news and as any normal person would, didn't want this news to cause John any kind of pain. There is also a hint of shame, not because he himself has done anything, but more the same type of shame you see people feel when they see other people treat someone badly simply because of who they were. Wishing someone had put a stop to it since they themselves can't exactly go back in time to change the mind of biggots. You can't even change the mind of biggots in todays world you can only challenge their views.

He's not upset in the terms of anger or rage. He is emotionally upset (upset/thrown off). In our community, we are told time and time again that "you're not born gay, you chose it." Having someone sit you down and confirm for you that contrary to what you've been told by other people your ENTIRE life, you ARE born gay! Just watching this video is awe-inspiring in my eyes.

The larger conversion that is not being had is " why is it so important for homosexuality to be seen as being chosen "? The reason for this is that, before something can be seen as being wrong, it first must be seen as being chosen, and therefore subconsciously worthy of contempt and hatred through subjective comparison. The reason that we never hear the term "heterosexual lifestyle " is because there is no need to categorize heterosexuality with such descriptively inherent connotative oversimplification in order to subconsciously justify contempt and hatred through subjective comparison.

Some of the people on here are completely ridiculous.... you've just watched this and literally been proven wrong but you're still saying people choose to be gay?? No. People can choose to conform to society and what the people around them want. They can choose who to be with and whether or not they want their lives to be easier! A man can marry a woman, and have kids etc but still be gay! And it's bad enough straight people on here saying they choose it.... but for gay people saying it, your just giving everyone more ammo against the LGBT community and giving smallminded people more reason to hate you. I actually think what John did is amazing, and you can see from his emotion towards the end how much it means to him that he has proven it... so to still say that's wrong? I think that's just denial tbh. Ok, I'll stop ranting now! :P

Neither can we choose mental illness or habitual tendencies, nor fetishes, but much like these things they are all circumstantial to how we are raised. Furthermore, scientist have never proven there was a gay gene, and furthermore, with the advancements in epigenetics scientists are starting to discover that behavior from past generations can be genetically inherited from other generations, and it has nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with behavior. Furthermore, Rome had a societal standard of beauty, it was youthfulness and hairlessness, the thing about Rome was that the men were often attracted to little boys as well as women. Sexuality has, and never will be definitive, every piece of consecutive evidence points to it being a behavioral phenomenon being caused be ancestors having scandalous behavior, and the point is furthered more by the fact that 2016 America encouraging sexuality has drastically different preferences and has documentation of proof of men's preferences in women changing with continuous exposure to pornography or exposure to naked women in general or in other words desensitization to women, it is by no means at all, implausible. It's strange how politics can be shoved so far into science that we start saying that if there is a correlation it is automatically true, or purposefully ignoring cases that disagree with a political idea or principle. It is just disgusting.

Sam They never wanted to prove there's a "gay gene", being gay is caused by a hormonal disbalance in the womb. So for example boys with many older brother and girls with many older sisters happen to be gay much more often because the testosterone or in female cases the oestrogen and progesterone isn't that much anymore in the womb as it would be with a first child.

@@ttamcc.4674 Nah that's wrong. You can look it up, it's usually predetermined by hormonal balance in the womb as well as hormonal balance in the own body later. That doesn't mean you have a sexuality as a child, but it is usually already predetermined when you are a child. However, sexuality can be fluctuant.

It's just ignorant to say that being homosexual is something you choose. Of course it is not. Do people actually believe you would make a choice which leads to being discriminated, hated and abused? When I came to terms with my sexuality, I didn't embrace it. I was afraid for myself and those around me, and what those around me would think, and if I at that time had another choice I probably would have taken it. But I am glad that I didn't as I today am openly gay and proud to be so! A sexuality is based on your feelings, not your actions. Feeling attraction towards somebody is not a choice. Deciding to act on them is what is a choice. And why should I not be allowed to act on my feelings just as everybody else around me is doing? Because of what a book might possibly say, if you interpret it strangely? I believe in equality for everybody, no matter gender, age, sexuality or ethnicity etc, and compromising basic human rights based on something that one did not choose is straight out rude and disrespectful. Obviously people disagree with my opinion, since this is an issue to begin with, and in my eyes, it's actually rather sad that a person is so caught up in their beliefs that they'd be willing to belittle or discriminate another person.

that argument is stupid,i dont think its always choice but there are alot of things people do and still get discrimated for, eating meat and smoking is bad for your health but people still do it because they are in love with and addicted to it and cant find the urge ,same could be said with paedos and henephilia but these thigs are bad becuase it negatively affects others,i thinks some people are born gay and some people are bornn bisexual but choose to be gay so thats the reason i think the environment can have an affect on bisexual people

i think instead of arguing over whether or not people are "born" gay we simply have to just accept that some people are gay and move on. it's the 21st century, it shouldn't be a big deal anymore, and judging on how open minded today's youth is in the next 50 to 100 years it probably won't be.

I adore John Barrowman, and I love his reaction to the results of these tests. As a straight woman who has many gay friends of both sexes, I've always believed that a gay person is born gay just as a white person is born white, a black person is born black, etc. It's not a choice, it's just a fact. I've even gone so far as to ask the parents of pretty much all of my gay friends when they first noticed that their kids might have been gay and all of them said they noticed signs in early childhood.

I am bisexual. Not straight, not gay. Those people who say "I was gay but now I'm not" are or were confused. You can tell what you are really easily based on your attraction. That natural arousal that comes spontaneously when thinking about things. There are also people who lie, who try to force themselves to believe they're not gay because people make them feel like they are the worst things just for being themselves.

If sexual orientation is actually determined before one is born (as in this video they're trying to prove and as I myself strongly believe), this news will really challenge people. One has to face with this new reality. One has to abandon one's remissive attitude against their offspring. This is the first change in mentality that new generations of parents should strive to do. Actually familiar environment is the cradle of society. Changes should involve ordinary families first. That is my point

I really don't know which way I prefer to think on whether it's something you're born with or something learned. Foremost I think it's sad it even has to matter. A person should be able to love who they love or have the mannerisms which make them most comfortable regardless of whether it's been programmed into their genetics or whether they just want to be that way. I suppose I've read too many sci-fi but I have this idea in my head of people being "tested" for their orientation and labeled.

I really don't think it matters whether a person's sexuality is determined by nature, nurture or a mixture of both, not in terms of whether or not the behaviour should be accepted. It's their life, it makes them happy (or at least gives them the same shot at happiness as the rest of the population has) and it doesn't hurt them or anyone else, so why police it? This kind of information is interesting but I don't think the whole LGBT rights movement should rest on it. But that's only my opinion as a straight ally.

@lachinx It's not just religious people. It's people in general who feel that being different is something to fear. It's the culture as well. As a person we are not influenced by outside media to be this accepting and loving person and to be open minded about things. Not all religious folk hate gays, in fact there are quite a few people right now who are getting their churches to stop anti-gay advertising. As a Catholic girl I've never hated gays. Nobody in my family has. It's not what we do.

@zettadom and the whole "female sexuality is more fluid" thing never fails to make me roll my eyes as a polysexual man. I don't see how sexuality is different amongst genders. it's a very complex thing, for EVERYONE. you can't just group all women together and say "their sexuality is more malleable!" society PERCEIVES sexuality differently, but that doesn't mean it is. ever heard of sexism? women being objectified is why two women kissing is generally more accepted.

This is pattern and generalisation. Women, generally, are more verbal, men more analytical. We tend to choose our field of work based on our strengths. I would venture a guess, straight or gay, someone who's a performer, would be stronger in their verbal abilities.I've not watched the whole programme as of yet. Intuitively, it seems right, they just need to prove the hypothesis that sexuality is inborn.

I hate the fact that this reinforces gender binary. Why are we so obsessed with finding differences between men, women, homosexual people, etc? Why don't just say, some people are like this, some people are like that, ignoring gender and sexual orientation? This upsets me.

It wasn't peer reviewed but the documentary was 'The Secret Life of Twins' carried out by Dr Robert Winston and perhaps it was a mistake to present the existence of sexuality genes as the only and arbitrary factor in sexuality as it is complex, but Dr Simon LeVay didn't reject the idea of genetic factors: "[I]t is possible to construct a hypothesis whereby both 'gay genes' and a desire to be homosexual are necessary for a person actually to become homosexual." (Chapter 12: Science and the Law)

It validates what you've always known, but you have so many people, all your life telling you the opposite of what you experience, that you grow to doubt yourself.Sadly all the scientific tests in the world won't convince some people that it is not a choice but maybe these tests will help "us" stop doubting ourselves.

Absolutely - I wasn't sure what homosexuality was. You are right. But because I can look in retrospect, as I obviously know what homosexuality is now, I can see that it the beginning of my consciousness of my sexuality. Also, I didn't play much with boys, I played with dolls with girls. The attraction to boys wasn't of the team kind. In regards to the inaccuracies in the science - we are 500 years more developed now, hence the VAST increase in accuracy.

Well, the question is, does restingontherock have an issue with the sex or the preference in gender? The sin isn't being gay, it's the sex. Because Christians are taught that sex is for married couples to have kids. If I'm wrong, correct me.

@surfer53 some people do. Now that it's socially acceptable to be gay it's almost like it's encouraged, especially in certain cultures, to the point where it's "in" to be gay or bi, so lots of people just do it cos they want to try it and stuff. For the most part it's completely a part of their biological and chemical make up, but the society we live in and the attitudes they have shape us as much as our DNA. Homosexuality is just another part of the nature/nurture debate

And this wasn't much further down that I thought might be worth mentioning. From Abstract, first line: "The present study sought to expand the limited evidence that sexual orientation is influenced by genetic factors." Last: "The findings suggest that a connection may exist between sexual orientation and genes both on chromosome 9 (where blood type is determined) and on chromosome 1 (where the Rh factor is regulated)." @CorkyMyraid Well, being bisexual doesn't mean you can choose that you are attracted to both genders.... I mean, I'm pansexual (meaning gender doesn't really matter), but I have friends who are bi and they certainly didn't choose that. And even when they are with someone of the opposite gender, they are still interested in the same gender. It's just who they are. I may be misunderstanding your post however.

I think it's brilliant that people are trying to find out what makes a person 'gay,' and not meaning it to sound cruel. If people understand what makes someone homosexual then maybe there wont be as much prejudice against them. I personally don't see what people have against the gay population, I have gay friends and they're just like anyone else! Saying this was it just my funny eye sight or was the scienticst looking kind of scared/freaked out at the end when he was telling John the results?

I hope no one will start throwing hate comments at me for saying this, but I don't really understand the problem if it turns out people DO choose to be gay. I mean... It's no big deal at all. Whether they prefer women or men, whether they choose to prefer women or men... Why's that a problem? Why's that a big deal? I wasn't born to dislike rap music, but I (somehow) chose that later in life. What's the problem with that...? Could anyone please explain it all to me?

@hernanhgs I somewhat agree, though this is only a clip from a longer piece. I personally don't much care if it's something from birth or something a person chooses. I think I believe it's a combination of both, though genetics are a hard thing to fight should you choose to go that route, as many gay people try to due to peer pressure and "societal norms"... whatever that's supposed to be these days I'm not sure.

This is not conclusive evidence. Anyone can choose who they physically sleep with; that's just common sense. As far as attraction goes though, we can "learn" to favor what we are attracted to in many ways.

he's an actor and a singer, among other things... isn't being verbose pretty natural for artists in general? just sayin'... i get that explaining away personality traits by biology and genetics is very liberating for many people and helps them through a lot of stigma (it helped me at first)- and it also helps a lot of people accept us, but i personally think it's got more to do with what happens after birth and is similar to how all our other personality traits develop over time.

@kontact666 I consider this issue a form of intrusion. The fact that people wants to know whether you're born gay or not is intrusive. It pisses me off that a guy I appreciate as a person and an actor has to stand up for himself, like he needs the approval of you or I. I don't give a damn whether he's born gay or choosing to be gay. It's NONE OF MY BUSINESS. I don't seek approval every time I check out a hot girl, nor should he in his relationship with a man. I don't think I'm that important.

@NegativeNumbers427 I see what you're saying, but I still don't understand why it would be a problem? Not for the actual person it involves, anyways. If people have a problem with it, it's THEIR problem, not the actual gay person's problem. And I don't really understand why it would be such a big thing to be different/wanna be different in the first place? Maybe 500 years ago, but not in the 21st century...?

It is known that at the same times as the Greeks, other cultures frowned upon homosexuality. You are right in regards to certain societies accepting and not accepting homosexuality; however accepting it or not, it still exists within the population. Sexuality and sexual acts are not the same. As a homosexual, I could have sexual intercourse with a woman, but that wouldn't make me heterosexual, but merely the act is typical of heterosexuals.

@JoshWestMusic It's not the words he's using that are being tested for. It's his ability to produce good words quickly. Plus, this is just one of the many factors that goes into the fact that gay people are born that way. Wouldnt you get happy if something came up that opposed your critics' opinions?

@surfer53 I understand what you're trying to say, but I think your missing the point of gays wanting more acceptance. When you flirt with a woman, there probably isn't any social stigma against you doing so, but for a man flirting with a man, the situation is quite a bit different. Personally, the reason I want more social acceptance for our community is not because I think I'm all that.

@Aldenissin So what? What bothers me is someone who doesn't even know their own book. I myself am a Christian and I am also gay. I see nothing that contradicts in these two worlds as I ACTUALLY READ and look for the meaning or symbolism behind things rather than quoting a few out of context snippets. What bothers me is how you've got such a GIANT log in your own eye and you can't even see it while you're trying to pick at the thorns of other people.

I think this is all very nice and pretty--processed, digested, and ready to swallow--but it completely ignores (and therefore erases) a lot of people: people whose sexuality is fluid, polysexual people (or what, do they have an androgynous brain?), people who choose their sexuality (some people can choose, others can't. I can't, but that doesn't mean I'll ignore those who can), etc. when will anyone acknowledge the complexity of sexuality? it's not always a static, black-and-white issue.
