Alternate but similar idea; A therapist (T1) goes to another therapist (T2) but they end up using therapy techniques on eachother halfway through, never solving T1’s issue but T2 has an issue solved by the end instead and they leave the session, thanking T1

Ian you probably won’t see this but it’s possible the test you were given wasn’t the right test. I failed my first ADHD test because they administered one for children. When I went back and said, no no please give me the test meant for ADULTS I “passed” with flying colors. ADHD symptoms present differently in children and adults, so the diagnostic material and criteria used HAS to consider the age of the patient for accurate results.
@donwrrybouti

also its possible to retrospectively meet criteria based on childhood symptoms but for the symptoms to be in partial remission as an adult

ADHD is often still not diagnosed properly. Anyone seeking diagnosis I would recommend seeking out a psychologist who specializes in it. I’ve seen people who have been properly diagnosed and have to move and change psychiatrists, will get the “you can read a book so you must not have ADHD” treatment from an uninformed doctor even though they have proof of previous diagnosis.

Yup, I also "failed" one with a clinical psychologist and then later got diagnosed by a psychiatrist. I was also misdiagnosed as bipolar for over a decade. I stopped mood stabilisers and started Ritalin, I've improved so much.

Diagnosis also requires hormonal panels and seeing usually more than one doctor after this by the way, a test doesn't auto-equal diagnosis usually.

on isadw he said that he went to his therapist and told her that he couldn't feel anything. If you are so numb that you don't even feel anything anymore then you are big time depressed. He wasn't hiding it before, so idk maybe he doesn't want people to think he didn't like his work at Smosh or Smosh anymore, but I always thought it was nice of him to share that he faced hard times with the viewers, because there is no shame in saying that

Unless you’re testing is done with an actual neurologist or psychologist, then it may not even have been the right testing. Because a couple of little papers that most general physicians are going to give or not accurate at all. So Ian was definitely describing ADHD in my opinion, but unless he had the official testing that clearly said no then, he should have the other testing. Also, another thing to remember, is that even if you’re not officially diagnosed with it, but certain tools and coping mechanisms that are often used for people with ADHD help you, then there’s no reason why you can’t utilize those.

exactly. most therapists (in the context of mental health) are psychologists, not psychiatrists, which means they can't prescribe medication. Basically psychiatrists focus more on the medical treatments for the problems and psychologists/mental health therapists focus on practical everyday coping mechanisms and other treatments that can help anyone experiencing symptoms of mental illness/neurodevelopmental disorders

I want to encourage Ian in talking to different professionals about his ADHD or suspicions of ADHD just because I notice a lot of traits in him (though neurodiversity is a vast spectrum) and people's ideas of neurodiversity, even professionals, are very restricted. There's alot of research out there and alont known in academia that doesn't make it to books like the DSM used for diagnosis, therapists aren't scientists and often overlook the nuances of certain disorders, especially the ones as stigmatized as autism and ADHD.

my adhd (and autism) have been kicking my ass with the hyperfocus lately. my special interest is pokemon which led me to pursue a computer science degree so i can become a game developer, so i've basically just been obsessed with all video games, computers/consoles (both retro and modern), and like 7 different programming languages. this wouldn't be too much of an issue except there have been several occasions this summer where i get so hyperfocused on whatever i'm coding or researching or whatever that i just sit there on my laptop until i look at the clock and it's 4:30 in the morning and i was supposed to take my medication at like 8:30pm the night before. i really hope getting a routine back once i'm back on campus helps bc this is not looking good haha

Licensed social worker here. Can you guys actually bring a mental health professional on next time to have these discussions?? I appreciate it any time that we can reduce stigma and talk about mental health openly, but just having two people talking about what they think or what they have heard and not having a professional to give the correct info about mental illnesses could be causing more harm than good. I worry about misinformation and confusion for people who haven't sought out mental health care themselves. I get that it's primarily intended to be a comedic podcast with Ian and Anthony but it's just frustrating to hear people rambling with incorrect or incomplete info when the people who have the knowledge to clarify things are out there!!

Agreed. Somehow the psychiatrist does a lot more problem solving than the clinical psychologist I was seeing. I also need a counsellor to rant. But the clinical psychologist I spoke to was just toxic positive, which is not what I need.

Ian, I remember the exact Star Wars commercial quote because it has lived in my head for the past 25 years. I could have sworn it was a toy commercial though, not a trailer? I couldn't find it on a cursory search but it's kind of crazy someone else remembered it

When Anthony talked about how crazy fast the body forgets pain that just happened a second ago is why i wish men could experience birth contractions to go from not able to breathe or talk painnn to just nothingness in the blink of a eye is always sooo crazy to me the come on is usually a little more gradual but just the INTENSE pain to just oh what did u wanna do after thi- back to intense pain and then like it never happened. Giving birth truly gives u a strangeee high 😅
