For decades, psychedelics were derided as dangerous recreational drugs; now many claim they have the potential to revolutionise the treatment of mental health. With hundreds of clinical trials now taking place, the psychedelic therapeutic market is predicted to be over ten billion within the decade. It has been widely thought that psychedelics are effective at treating mental health because of the way they change brain chemistry. But studies from King's College London and Johns Hopkins suggest this is an error, arguing that it's the psychedelic experience that aids mental wellbeing, not the physical brain changes.
Should we stop focussing on brain chemistry as the solution to mental health? What is it about psychedelic experience that can aid mental well being and will psychedelics live up to their promise and usher in a mental health renaissance? Or, is the hype bubble about to burst and should we look elsewhere for the silver bullet to the mental health crisis of our age?

Psychedelics 🍄 killed my drug and alcohol dependencies - one trip two years ago to purge my depression and chronic anxiety from my system was the best decision I ever made. I've done Psilocybin mushrooms a few times since, but after my last high dose trip I realized that the medicine has taught me enough for now. I might return to psychedelics later in my life if I ever find a source.

I suffer from long term, debilitating depression. I gathered my strength and made an appointment to ask a psychiatrist about psilocybin. I got there and his secretary, in the waiting room, was tittering. I went in and he was dumbfounded I'd ask about MAGIC MUSHROOMS! Then he went on to discount the scientific studies I gave him. He claimed it was the soft music they played during the trials, or the dim lighting that cured people's depression. I never returned.

SSRI’s can DRASTICALLY diminish the effects of psychedelics! I have some recent experience with that. It was shocking and disappointing, because I could have used it.
