Now, we’ve all been driving electric cars for a while now, and although there are many things to love, the environmental benefits are a big reason for us all wanting to make the switch. You can argue all you like about the impact of batteries, but there is no denying that local air pollution is better when EVs are around - especially in urban areas.
Which is where electric trucks like the ones we’re driving in this video are PERFECT.
Unlike our cars, the journeys done by bin lorries, buses and delivery trucks are predictable and regular. So the operator will know how much battery capacity they need and when they need to charge.
To find out more, we visited Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire to check out Mercedes’ growing range of all-electric large commercial vehicles.
First up is the eEconic which has three batteries, each with a capacity of approximately 112 kWh - that’s bigger than pretty much every electric car we can think of. And there are three of them! That gives a range of between 60 and 90 miles, which doesn’t sound a lot, but it does have to work for a living. A comparable diesel would be getting about 9mpg!
There are two motors, with a continuous output of 330 kW and maximum output of 400 kW. Unusually for an electric vehicle there’s a two-speed transmission - just like a Porsche Taycan!
Next up is the eActros 400, which means it has four of those whopper batteries, giving it a capacity of 448 kWh. That’s the same as 10 Corsas. This is designed for longer distance work, so has a range of about 250 miles. Finally, we have the eActros 300, which has three batteries with a total capacity of 336 kWh.
Charging? Well, if you are talking about delivery trucks or bin lorries, they can do their round and then come back to the depot and charge overnight. No problem. Easy.
These can all charge at 160 kW, meaning they can go from 20% battery to 80% in just over an hour with three batteries and in around an hour and a half with four batteries.
There’s no AC charging either, so you couldn’t plug these into a slow charger as there’s just no point.

As someone living next to a road that goes up a hill: the single best thing about EV trucks would be the lowered sound polution. Revving trucks is only beaten by motorcycles when it comes to sound pollution.

The loudest thing on the one trialled here was a squeaky hydraulic ram that needed greasing. The next loudest was the chatter from the collection team... 😁

Allied Sweepers in Falkirk were working on small electric street sweepers in 2007, for that very reason. Sadly way too early for the market.

As an American, it is such a strange thing to see a KZbin comment section on EVs that isn't filled with hate filled screeds by individuals whose grasp of the English language was not particularly influenced by higher education.

i guess it's because 6 and 8 cylinders are more expensive in europe. and 4 cylinders do not have a great sound. switching to EVs is not a huge problem regarding the loss of sound. the second thing, probably more important. europeans do not drive very long distance. this is where EVs have their downside. and infrastructure is much better than in the US. all in all, europe leads probably two years when it comes to EV adoption compared to the US. and now after solar energy is getting that cheap, there is an additional benefit for people who can make use of solar compared to expensive gas.

Quiet bin trucks and delivery vans are great for residential areas. There's also the benefit of no exhaust fumes while the vehicle is left idling. What's not to like.

I work in logistics. It would be better to have batteries built into all trailers which could be used as a top up to the truck battery. When a driver picks up a trailer it could be fully charged and combined with the batteries on the truck it would extent the distance that can travel. Putting 500 kg of batteries under the floor of a trailer would reduce load capacity but not all trailers are loaded to their total weight capacity. This could work on 40 foot trailers but with rigid trucks that would not be a solution. As a side note. . . Electric vehicles have been used in warehouses for decades and the solution to running an electric forklift or powered pallet truck or any electric vehicle, 24/7 is battery swapping. We've been doing it for decades. Logistics are already experienced with electric vehicles in their warehouses. Extending this experience to delivery vehicles may be challenging but not impossible.

I live in Canada my uncle was a trucker he would and truckers still do 12 hours a day especially on the lobg hauls which most here and in USA are ... Thats about a 1000 kilometers a day at least but many days they do more

There are so many videos 'against' electric transport and I really don't understand why. The transition can't come fast enough for me. There is NOTHING to be against.

90 miles of range, that is useless for a long distance trucker. Don't tell me it takes 4 hours to charge up. As for bin EV lorries that was tried in Nottingham and failed. In fact the company who supplied them is now out of business.

A bin lorry doesn't make 90 miles every day. You don't need more. Do the bin lorries have 300 gallon diesel tanks? So why should they have bigger battery? Dennis still makes these lorries, they are not out of business, they may have some financial issues but developing an electric lorry is not cheap. Don't forget, they have to fight with huge companies that make diesel engines.

Our council have a fleet of electric bin trucks, yes they are quiet, the rubbish going in the back is the noisy part 😂😂 they haven't got any electric recycling trucks yet tho 🙄

If we can electrify trucking it would make us all oxygen breathers happy.Diesel trucking makes way more pollution than cars. Electric powertrain is so much better.

How heavy are they? I’m assuming the battery pack alone is somewhere close to 10K lbs. Won’t it eat into the amount they’re rated to haul?

Only 15% of the lorries in UK pull more than 80% of the max payload. 30% of the total milleage is with empty trucks.

If they are near 160 Wh/kg (about where LFP should be) then each battery module will weigh about 700 kg, so 2800 kg (6000 lbs) for the one with 4 modules. But there's no diesel engine, and those big diesel engines are heavy, so the total weight penalty shouldn't be all that bad.

I've been driving heavy trucks for 13 years now and Electricity is a great idea for Local trucking for sure, like 200-300km per day. The instant torque w/o the need of a transmission would be such a relief. We have a lot of Electric School busses here now, that would just be a derivative of that.

@@ZoomZoomMX3 In Europe, the number of hours a driver is allowed at the wheel, and the prevalent speed limits and traffic conditions, limit the range of any long-haul truck to around 700 km (430 miles) per day, max! That is within the range of the Tesla Semi, even pulling a full load, for example. And, at the end of the max 9 driving hour day, there are 15 hours to recharge the battery... more than enough on even a car-size DC charger!

@@adrianthoroughgood1191 Absolutely! And there is no need for "Megachargers" at truck stops. V3 Superchargers, installed in such a way to charge trucks, are all that is needed. Only companies running their trucks two shifts a day will need some more powerful chargers at their bases.

My company has 40 lorries. We make around 15-20k miles every day and use 4-6000 liters diesel every day. Only 6-10 of the trucks make more than 200-250 miles every day on all shifts. That could save thousands every day. They can pay for one lorry every one or two months and still save money from the services and maintenance.

15-20k miles every day.., You would need like a 4 megawatt electric service to support charging for that kind of daily mileage. Probably cost about 100 million to install the charging, if you are lucky and in a location where there is that much electrical capacity available.

@@joecummings1260 We are talking for a company that makes millions, the warehouse that I work is a 30 million, 300,000 square feet building. I think that you can fit a lot of solar panels on that roof. I think that they have more than enough power to charge the 50-100 electric, with lithium battery forklifts 2-3 times every day.

And yes Tom, Electric lorries are delivering!👍🤩 I saw a German Trucker/KZbinr driving the Volvo e-lorry long distance in Germany and he was enjoying it so much, that he concluded that je can't wait until the supporting infrastructure is there and they got more affordable! So an actual trucker said he would love to switch, because it was more fun to drive plus all the other benefits!

Do you think that diesel lorries are harder to drive? The last time I saw a lorry with manual transmision was 10-12 years ago and it was the only one in the fleet and replaced rhe same year. You just put it on D, and go. You don't even have to engage or release the hand brake. Just get in, turn the key (or push a button) push another button and go.

6mpg vs a car at 35mpg car.... So the battery size almost equates. If is massively obvious that certain lorries should be electric.

It gets the ball rolling, then after the first 1000 subsidies the govt reviews the scheme. They did the same for cars, and that's now stopped here in the UK, but currently continue doing the same for trucks and vans as it will make more difference to a wider group of people - one electric bin truck affects a whole neighbourhood.

We have at least one electric bin lorry in Oxford and it's simply fantastic - fitting in well with the fully electric fleet of DPD and Royal Mail delivery vehicles, increasing numbers of fully electric buses and even some electric open-top tourist buses! The transformation in noise and emissions is noticeable. We need more of these!

Re: an eHGV delivering petrol or diesel: the irony will have to wait a bit longer as the current regs for fuel delivery are so out of date that it's actually illegal to pull a fuel tanker with a BEV unit. It's just one of the things that a group of industry bodies and government is working to change!

Electric trucks will be even a much bigger story than cars, as trucks usually drive high mileage the savings (both for environment and cost savings) are HUGE. Range will go up constantly as batteries evolve and it's about time to stop burning diesel, time to go electric :-)

So much regen in stop-start! Interestingly the machinery in the back uses more juice than one would expect. I hear that where the Lunaz bin lorry struggled.

What huge fun and a glorious preview. Firstly Mercedes, not my favourite manufacturer, just went up about ten notches in my view. Secondly this is just the sort of thing which distinguishes Electrifying from other car review channels. Finally I hope I never have to drive any of the vehicles previewed; I want a Brabus or a Mini.

Another advantage of using cameras instead of mirrors, is that cameras don't block your view of incoming traffic at junctions such as roundabouts .

Another is that you can then start putting things in like automated Bike and pedestrian recognition system in place that will stop the truck if it at risk of hitting one.

Huh. I hadn't thought of that mandated driving time and break schedule. Stopping for 45 minutes ever 4.5 hours is actually quite substantial. And I'm almost kinda shocked at how slow these fast charge. With big batteries (and I understand these are actually several small batteries), the potential for fast charging is huge. After all, the Silverado EV has a battery that is half the size of the full size truck/lorry, but charges at more than twice the rate. First of all, even if you put two of those batteries in, the weight is probably quite manageable overall, considering the Silverado packs it all into a much smaller package. The Silverado takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to fill up all 200+ kWh completely, which means you can get WELL over 50% in 45 minutes (it charges much faster up to 30%). And interestingly, it's NOT using 800V architecture. It's using a similar split battery 400V system just like these trucks are, but with some engineering that allows it to put them in series while charging to access much faster speeds. Still not at 0->100% in 45 minutes, but potentially 0>80%? Getting pretty close to that necessary range - and that's at 350kw. It'd be nice to avoid having to install megawatt chargers everywhere (fast charging at that rate are going to be higher and less efficient).

All sound good. But is not the elephant in the room is "where is the charging infrastructure". You regually see lorries parking in slip road on motorway service stations how are they going to charge there lorries. Lorries park in lay-bys on country roads by me. Are they going to put charging station there. The lad from Mercedes talks about 800V 1Mw chargers It going to take a very long time to put all that in place . just look on the issues of suppling charging stations for cars.

Nicola is spot on about the biggest benefits of EVs - cleaner, quieter streets. I live on a main road and for us, and especially others living on even busier roads, this will, eventually, make a profound difference. If we can start generating much more renewable energy and get the grid up to speed, the future will look pretty rosy.

Good to see some progress with trucks. I've always thought this was going to be a bit of a stumbling block for the adoption to electric. We have electric buses now in our city and they have dropped the noise significantly. There are still quite a few ICE buses going about and you really notice the noise and smell of them compared to EV buses.

At 1:30 you said you can’t deny the impact of zero emissions. I have people who say ‘with adblue the exhaust is cleaner than when it came into the engine. Can’t make this stuff up.

I would love for pence per mile and fuel/energy per year costs to be a standard part of auto reviews. Also please start doing kWh per 100km comparisons for their petrol and diesel equivalents. Petrol and diesel is just a form of energy storage that is then turned into motion.

The quoted ranges, loaded or empty? What is the payload capacity compared with a diesel truck? For light weight loads I can see this working if volume capacity is less than weight capacity but, with heavy loads, not so sure. In my opinion it's horses for courses.

Electric is great but... 7:23 let's be honest, cam mirrors are not good for HGVs as there is no depth / distance perception, it's like looking with one eye. I cannot get the same accuracy as when I have a real mirror. 8:35 that's why we always drive with a two man crew, so that you can drive 20 hours continuous and the limit is only the drivers' bladder! Fine for small islands, but not good for continental long-distance routes as the truck has to stop for at least 9 hours daily rests.

Generally good review, but you two are a little too much "rah, rah, cheerleader" and not enough critical journalist. The goal of 100% EVs by 2040 is simply unrealistic... Infrastructure does not magically appear overnight (or in 16 years). And, for the scale needed to go full EVs, its not just charging stations its substantial electric utility grid uprates. This cannot happen as fast as you think. I'm an engineer and work in electric power generation (hydro-electric) in California, USA. Here we have even more aggressive goals that are laughably unobtainable! Note, I'm not against EVs, I own a plug-in-hybrid and just bought a full electric truck. Both are great. I just believe we should all live and work in the real world. Our politicians (and journos like you two) are too emotionally driven wishful thinkers. Good thing is you are both still young, so you'll learn in time...

no pollution might have to check your facts what about the whole process of making the battery then the transportation of the batteries all the cars of the drives of everyone in the process of mining processing and making the batteries and finally the transportation of the batteries lol. also how long do the batteries really last especially under a fully load trailer. finally, where is the electric coming from to fully charge these batteries fossil or nuclear fuel. last but least charging the battery. I call BS as to saving the planet because after the battery gives up, catches on fire etc. you have to get rid of the battery......good luck with that. wake up smell the fumes of BS

Norway are ready. But, the trucking industry needs to get serius. Norway are ready to deploy chargers for trucks that can charge 1MW. Here someone needs to make a standard. If Tesla contacted the government in Norway, something could be done about it. Or, others. The trucks are not made for charging on car infrastructures.

Nicola! Brilliant driving, better than most truckers I know! But they are on the road :) Seriously though, if these vehicle can do 4.5 hours driving and charge while having a tacho break that is awesome. There is infrastructure in Norway or Sweden that do have HGV's charging, separate from cars, so why can't it be here? Great episode, this is here and now, the cost of servicing and fuel will off set the initial pricing. Pricing should come down as more are built or bought. Let's have long haulage vehicles going to hubs and then short haulage vehicles going into towns and cities, I hated going into London in my HGV but was happy trunking around the UK. My concern with the megawatt charging would be how many can you install in one place, because there will be more than one articulated truck pulling in to recharge at once, therefore you'll need some sort of onsite battery store

A couple of wind turbines, a few hundreds of solar panels on the roof of the building and a few container size batteries can do the job easily. They cost a lot, but pay themselves in a couple of years.

UK speeds are 50mph (non-motorway, I believe) and 50mph on other roads. Some places say 60mph on dual carriageways, but I think not. EU is restricted to 56mph, so I expect many trucks have alternative restriction kit for international deliveries.

@@AllInVehicleInspections Don’t think so. Do check up on the single carriageway. I am sure it has been 50mph for several years (since 2015?). In fact, Scotland was still 40mph apart from they raised the limit on the A9(?)because the road haulage crew warned of a boycott of northern Scotland if it wasn’t changed from 40mph. Current-day Scotland speed limits for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes may have changed. I do think it is 50mph on non-motorway dual carriageways but I could be corrected on that one.

It's obvious you're not a trucker when you say a rigid is easier to drive than an artic, try it in a city centre and see the difference. 12 point turn anyone 🤣 Also a modern bin lorry will be seeing 11-15mpg, my 28tonne empty Scania artic does 7mpg

That's why it's a maximum. Often cars drivers slow them down esp if they drive to close and can't be seen. 56mph is not a target.

250 miles distance for a electric truck is rubbish. Most Class 2 trucks cover more than this per day. The load weight and weather temperature will reduce this distance to.

Yes but you can't do that without a mandatory 45 minutes rest. An given that UK employment law also make clear that a employee can expect a 1hr break after 4hrs of work. Then no one in the UK is doing more than 250 miles without being a charger and able to charge the vehicle.

I would've loved to be a fly in the cabin with Nicola driving these lorries. I'd like to see the humongous chargers for these beasts: they must crank out huge amounts of DC power to fill up those batteries! I've never even sat in a hauler like these, but my impression is that the drivers' biggest challenge is how to turn corners with those long tails behind them, cutting across several lanes in the process. Let's see you two take some corners next time!

Great review ,I wish they'd do it here in Central Canada where i live we have the 2nd cheapest electricity in Canada and its all water generated, the garbage collecting trucks here noisy as hell and we all have alley ways and with those trucks you just have shown us with the rear steering on them would be a great option for them here, and all our trucks are separate, household waste, then recycled materials , and yard waste during the spring,summer and fall months and i have had to install a camera on the front of my garage to keep them from hitting the corner of it and my approach shattering the concrete on the corner from the weight of the trucks, are only issue is the extreme winters we have for 6 months is temps that are regularly -25 -30 Celsius ,batteries wouldn't last long at all, here is to hoping the new battery chemistry is a viable solution for these issues 👍
