Wednesday marks 30 years since a magnitude 6.7 earthquake rocked Northridge.
The quake, caused by a sudden rupture of a previously undocumented blind thrust fault, damaged the Santa Monica Freeway, started almost 500 fires, killed more than 60 people and destroyed 50,000 housing units.
In an interview for Frank Buckley Interviews, world renowned seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones sat down to discuss the 30th anniversary.

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since this, 1994-2024. I was about 12 years old, now 42, its weird and different.

I remember It was like a bomb hit, everything came crashing down, sirens & alarms going off, fires, stuff in my home became airborne and flew across the room, I was injured, left the building as quick as we could, power was out for weeks, CNN was broad casting from the high school around the corner, we all slept outside.

I was 15 years old when this happened. My Family and I was sleep when it hit. It felt like a explosion with the house shaking shaking up and down. I though I was dreaming until my Dad yelled 'Earthquake'. We all got up and stood in the doorways of our rooms. The power went out. It was crazy. I can't believe today is 30 years. 😲

the 1953 Hollywood apartment building I currently live in was undamaged, and passed the post Northridge earthquake inspection, but several buildings on my block and neighborhood (some newer) were badly damaged and red tagged, so it wasn't just an issue with the age of structures

Great interview. I wasn't born yet for another two months and I was all the way in Chicago when I was. Felt my first California earthquake a couple weeks ago, And it just felt like someone kicked in my bed. Felt a N ew Madrid fault earthquake in 2011 all the way up in Chicago. Haven't been awake for either, earthquakes to me are way scarier than tornadoes.

I actually appreciate that KTLA had a global expert on quakes on this show to explain what is really going on! And that we will, at some unknown time, get a pretty darn big quake on the San Andreas Fault...
