Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, answers a caller who wonders, "I've always believed that salvation is like a light switch. Once it's on, it's always on forever. In 1 Corinthians 1: 18 I understand that the Greek word indicates "being saved" rather than a point in time. Could you help to explain this?"

I'm sticking with my King James Bible. And it says we are saved by placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ! The catholic church is behind the new Bible versions and making salvation a process.

What is your view of sanctification? Do people just believe on Jesus for fire insurance against hell? Isn't it deeper than that? Death and hell are the righteous judgments and consequences of sin. Sin is the heart of it all. Even as genuine believers in Jesus, we are still turning against sin daily. We are dying to sin and learning to pick up our crosses. I don't want to only be saved from the consequences of sin but from sin itself. It is completely through the blood and merit of Jesus Christ. God gets the glory for our salvation through Christ and out sanctification through the Holy Spirit. I find it comforting to know that through Christ I am being saved, because I feel my own weakness and frailty daily. It is not just a one time experience. From the moment I believed to the day I die, I need the salvation and righteousness of Christ applied to me. I need Him now just as much as I did when I first believed. I need to know greater communion and closeness with Christ. This is the great pursuit and meaning in life, to know Christ more and to be saved from the body of this death.

*ARE* you "saved"? The apostles Paul and Peter said we in this mortal life have "the hope of salvation" and are appointed "to obtain salvation" and "shall be saved" in the future. For example: "But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" (Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 5:8,9. Did Paul tell them they _had been_ saved?) "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." (Acts 15: 11; Peter, speaking to apostles and elders about future salvation for both themselves and Gentiles.Did Peter tell them they _had been_ saved?) Peter and Paul understood that we will not be saved - saved from ever perishing in death - until we actually receive the _promised_ (1 John 2:25) gift of eternal life. Paul explained (1 Corinthians 15:50-54 and 1 Thess 4:13-17) that we will receive eternal life at our resurrection at Jesus' return. Not until then will we be saved from ever perishing in death. ⚫ Meanwhile in this mortal life we are _being_ "saved," in a different sense: we are being saved from slavery to sin. Through a relationship with Him through the spirit we are led out of slavery to sin and led into His righteousness, being made ready, fit, to receive the gift of eternal life. This is sanctification: "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent." (Jesus, in Revelation 3:19) A relationship with Him "yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby" (Hebrews 12:11). "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." (Romans 8:13,14) "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10) "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (Jesus, in John 15:6) ⚫ Meanwhile in this mortal life we may _have been_ "saved," in yet another sense: saved from the hopelessness of having to perish as the penalty for past sins. We've all sinned. Our sins have separated us from God (Isaiah 59:1,2) and earned the "wages" of sin: death (Romans 6:23). We are promised God's mercy if we'll do as He instructs us to do. We'll be forgiven and redeemed, by grace, from the death penalty already earned for past sins. Jesus made that redemption possible when He gave His life to create a ransom payment (Matthew 20:28), making His death, His blood, available as a payment of our death penalty. We can be "purged" from our "old sins" (2 Peter 1:9). We can have "remission of sins that are past" (Romans 3:25). We can have our past sins "blotted out" (Acts 3:19) and be redeemed from the death penalty earned for those sins. With past sins and their death penalty blotted out we are no longer separated from God. We are now justified or reconciled to God in this mortal life (but not yet "saved" from ever perishing in death). How can we receive this mercy, this grace? "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13) "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30) "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV). Note that our sins were NOT blotted out when Jesus died on the cross. We must repent for our sins to be blotted out. Then, no longer separated from God, we can begin a "time of refreshing" - a new life - "in the presence of the Lord" through the holy spirit . . . sanctification. Note how Paul separated justification from salvation: they are two different things at different times. It is a mistake to confuse justification (now) with being saved (in the future) through an ongoing relationship with Him, continuing in repentance: "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." (Paul, in Romans 5:9) ⚫ Without repentance we have no redemption and will surely perish, unredeemed from the death penalty already earned for past sin (Romans 6:23). That's why Jesus warned, *"except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish"* (Luke 13:5).

It must mean "being saved" so why does the enemy still prowl around believers, what would be the point? Is the enemy's role just to hassle the sheep or if he gets to devour one, does that purely mean he somehow smothers his or her effectiveness to win souls and maintain a good testimony for Jesus as one of His ambassadors? Or does this devour mean loss of reward or worst case scenario make a believer lose the way and end up lost again.

Not really sure, but is it that we are saved in a sense that Jesus has already redeemed us of our sins, and we’re being saved in a sense that God continues to work on us and in us to be more like Christ as we embark on our Christian journey? That’s the only way I can make sense of it.

I believe so. Sanctification follows faith in Christ. It is the blood and merit of Jesus that saves us. It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us. We are founded on Christ and God continues to grow us and shape us into His righteousness. We learn to follow and obey. It is a process, but thank God we are not alone in it. The Holy Spirit is our strength. He changes our hearts. 💛

That word that that guy tried to pronounce is not only in this verse but it’s also in revelation 21:24 and it renders it like the king James Are saved. I think that’s the correct way. 1/3 of us is saved and sealed to the day of redemption where is holy now as we will be in heaven. It’s the soul in the body which is the problem here. So I think are being saved is a problem. Besides perishing , We are saved it’s the nonbelievers who are perishing. We are living and we are saved and sealed. when you get the spirit to take the lead, and the soul and the body will follow and manifest fruits of the spirit. But if you let the soul the emotional part take the lead then the body will follow and the spirit will be not able to manifest all you could be. Ephesians 4:24 says we were created for righteousness and holiness that means right now. Again 1/3 of us. So we are saved again sealed. Start living a life that reflects that through the spirit.

Bible answer man Net work>>> Ok, I get it, this is a controversy about if either the bible is clear on the teaching that their is being saved and then also them who are not yet saved, the persons who are not saved yet, are a group that are not the same category as the group of persons who are not saved because they are not going to be saved and this distinction is because the group of people which are not yet saved are different because they will be saved at some point in time in the future tense usage of a salvation process, and of course their are those which are presently referred to as being saved in the past tense usage, and these people who claim to be saved already and these people seem to be making a distinction between only two different types of people, as an example, the first group of people are either those who are currently past tense saved people, and then the second group of the other people who are not currently past tense saved people, seemingly implying that those people who are not yet currently past tensed saved people are by reasons are not saved either because they have not chosen the Lord yet, and or are still in a life of rebellion against God and or it is because they are still living in sin and have not chosen to repent or what ever they are supposedly required to do, and so by drawing a line between the saved and the not saved and saying that their is no in between, and claim that their is no in between, implying that their is no people that are going to be saved, and claim that if you are not saved, then you can`t be saved some day, is non-sense, what about all the people that are not born yet? And to say that their is no such thing as to become saved, or to be saved category is false and it reeks of predestinationism, which goes against free will and choice, which is having the ability to make a decision about either to believe or not to believe, when the bible is clear that we are given a choice to become believers, or to decide to not become a believer. My example is that I have chosen to believe in the gospel, and so then I believe that when our Lord comes back from heaven then at that future point in time, then if I am dead I will then be resurrected from death and then I will be given eternal lived then at that future time, and then I can say at that future time, that I am now saved, and it is because of resurrection from the grave is a salvation process that I don`t believe can be by passed, according to what I think, and also because of how I understand what the bible teaches about salvation, Some other person may believe that they are already saved and recite verses like ,( he that heareth my word and believeth in me is not condemned but is passed from death unto life.} they can use this verse and out of its context use it to support their passed tense already saved doctrine and try also to condemn all who don`t chose to view salvation as being a finished work, it`s ridiculous to imply this, because, what about the fact that the bible teaches a return of Jesus Christ to save the people who are doomed to be killed by the beast powers armies at the end of the world, Matthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. This is a future coming salvation teaching of Jesus Christ our Savior, and also Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. And this verse from Luke's gospel teaches a future coming time of redemption, which is based on the return of the savior to bring this event to pass, and so are we redeemed yet? No, not yet, we have been bought with a price, but the Lord as of yet has not returned to complete the transaction yet, the Lord will take possession of his people that he paid for with his shed blood, and that requires a return to earth to retrieve his people from their graves via resurrection of the dead. Or what? you don`t believe that Jesus is coming back?

2 Timothy 1 9 Who HATH SAVED us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 10But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:. Ephesians 2 8 8For by grace ARE YE SAVED through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

2 Timothy 2:14-19 14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to [d]strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and [e]idle babblings, for they will [f]increase to more ungodliness. 17 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and THEY OVERTHROW THE FAITH OF SOME. 19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of [g]Christ depart from iniquity.” Ephesians 5:3-7 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For [a]this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them. How do you explain that? I'm not being difficult, I'm just struggling to see how your verse trumps these, and if so, why? Why would yours make these irrelevant and not the other way round? I'm genuinely asking as I'm studying this.

Bible Answer Man Network -- I am sorry but I am a reader of the KJV bible and I do prefer to rely only on this text for information concerning knowledge, and I have known for a very long time already that all of the other newer translations were off in what they were saying, and so I have been a KJV bible only believer for several years already. I just want to comment on the statement made in this video about the differences between the terms being saved and are saved and how the NKJV bible uses the different tense rather than the KJV and how the passed tense is used when referring to the saved people, this is a very complicated issue and could be considered controversial, but I have the understanding that the salvation is a mutual process between God and man, and that man has his obligation in this matter whereas God has done everything regarding what God decided that needed to be done when he gave his Son Jesus a ransomed offering for us all at the cross John 3:16 Now then it is the person that is saved that must do the other part of the process, and this thing that man must do is to believe that he is saved, and this is a hard thing to accomplish for someone who is challenged with all of the different beliefs of faith in Jesus and what was done at the cross, and to learn and know the reasoning behind the message of the cross, we are saved by what God did and not by anything that we do Idea is something like God at some past point in time was looking out over the edge of the bottomless pit and seeing that all of mankind was doomed and God came up with a solution that would bring about the rescue of all of mankind by sending his Son Jesus to die on the cross for all of the sins of the world, ( 2 Peter 3:9 says that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance, ) and this response by God then it then saved the world, and that Jesus is the savior of the world and then to just leave out the part that man has to do it would seem that the belief in this is suggesting that their is no more perishing and that all are saved, and that the person that was perishing, which just so happens to be all of us, well then we are all saved, and that perishing is a past tense word usage which implies that God decided to only save a few and not to save the whole of mankind, but only those persons who God has some how decided by a process of tests which are being performed by God which would determine which person would be saved and which person would not be saved, and the testing for each individual is a life time until the end of the persons life, as Paul has pointed out with his example of running a race striving for the prize at the end of the race, this doesn`t in no way expresses the idea that it happens in the twinkling of an eye and that salvation is instantaneously achieved, and yes I do view salvation as being a work in progress and that the work that needs to be done is the things that I am required to exhibit throughout the rest of my life while I am in service to God as a slave of Christ working my way into his favor and then after that receiving the reward for my efforts, but in no way can I be thinking that I am saved and that their is nothing that I have to do, like maintaining good works, It is when the process is all complete that I can say that I am saved when I am dead and then resurrected from the dead and then judged and proclaimed by God after God has determined that I am some how worthy or a overcomer and then can I hear the words ,well done my faithful servant enter thou into the joy of your Lord, and only after that can I then say, or to think that I have been saved, and to me this has not happened yet so then I can`t say that I am saved. Although I believe that Jesus is my savior and that believing in him I will be saved some day and that the details are being worked out here below at this present time. I have repented and I believe that I will look up some day and see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory, and then I will lift up my head and know that my redemption draweth nigh, and so when this takes place then after it happens then I can say that I have been saved, but then since it has not yet come to pass, then to claim that I am saved would be claiming that something that hasn`t happened yet has already happened, and so isn`t that kind of a false belief? Has the Son of man come in a cloud with great power and glory yet? And how can I say that I am redeemed when our Lord has not yet returned? Being redeemed is part of the salvation process, and so when I am become redeemed, then I can say that I am saved, and yes the ransomed cost has been paid, but the Lord has not yet returned for the completion of this transaction, and after this event takes place then those who have been bought with a price can say that they have been saved and not before that happens.

Douay-Rheims Bible For the word of the cross, to them indeed that perish, is foolishness; but to them that are saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God. King James Version 18 For G1063 the preaching G3056 of the cross G4716 is G2076 to them G3303 that perish G622 foolishness G3472; but G1161 unto us G2254 which are saved G4982 it is G2076 the power G1411 of God G2316. G4982 Original: σώζω Transliteration: sōzō Phonetic: sode'-zo Thayer Definition: to save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction one (from injury or peril) to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue to save in the technical biblical sense negatively to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment to save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance Origin: "from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saoz, "safe")" TDNT entry: 23:05,1 Part(s) of speech: Verb Strong's Definition: From a primary word σῶς sōs̄ (contraction for the obsolete σάος saos, " safe" ); to save, that is, deliver or protect (literally or figuratively): - heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole. 2 corinthians 2: 15 For G3754 we are G2070 unto God G2316 a sweet savour G2175 of Christ G5547, in G1722 them that are saved G4982, and G2532 in G1722 them that perish G622: If its not a gift the moment we put faith in the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) Then its a works salvation and not grace. Ephesians 2:8,9 is very clear. We are saved by grace through faith not of anything we do not of work, our participation is Faith in the finished work of christ. Our works dont save us but earn us rewards. The bible does not contradict itself. God chose to save in this manner and we should be humble and receive his gift of salvation. Fallen man wants to participate in his own salvation, he cannot grasp the fact that God would make salvation simple, so simple that mankind would not receive his gift of grace by just simply believing in Christ. Its sad that many will not receive his grace but will try to earn it. Very sad.
