Just stumbled upon your channel yesterday and have to say how refreshing it is to find a "gimmick-less" informational channel for a change. No quip-filled intro tagline. No migraine inducing pop graphics. No snazzy exit catchphrase. Just and intelligent Homo Sapiens Sapiens putting forth a topic and informing the viewer on that topic. And it's great to see videos that are well thought out and clearly presented by someone who obviously understands the material. You have a new "sub" as of today and I'm looking forward to viewing both your past and future content. And as to the topic at hand. I am quite comfortable having all of these fascinating peoples in my bloodline. Without them I wouldn't be who I am; none of us would. I don't know if it is shame, a lack of humility or just pure prejudice that would lead someone to distance themselves. But I myself take pride in the knowledge that all of these intelligent, resourceful, rugged and persevering people came before me. And I too am grateful for my solid brow line!

"Human" is one of those words with multiple definitions and a ton of interpretive meanings that, as you discussed in the video, aren't necessarily accurate. Biologically, human is in reference to our subspecies, but a lot of people have inaccurate interpretations of this definition. Culturally, human is in reference to our minds, as any intelligent entity that behaves similarly enough to what we consider a normal person would be considered human. Theoretically, even an artificial intelligence, alien being, or even just an animal that could speak a human language could be considered somewhat human or to have humanity. I think we're approaching a cultural point where we recognize the importance of our mental humanity and we recognize the bias in associating biological humanity with mental humanity.We're still a long way off, but there are plenty of people who can openly discuss this open minded view, which is a pretty big step forward.
@thinkfact
@thinkfact 9 жыл бұрын
TabletopGodhands Definitely. Our language obviously predates their understanding so previously conceived ideas in terms of how inclusive specific terminology can be is being challenged as we learn more about how similar we are to specific organisms and even objects. We are discovering faster then our minds in culture is changing about our previous constructs, and that's what makes it so difficult in terms of implicating them. You bring up a lot of good points and hopefully these issues can eventually be solved so that way they don't negatively impact how we can understand the world and express it. Thank you for the comment!

I feel the term human encompasses most of what we use it for today. For the majority of the world, any person we consider to be legally the same species (or subspecies) is considered a human. I feel like the word you might be looking for is humane, which you seemed to describe with the Neanderthals burying their dead and therefore showing this quality through compassion and civility. I feel it is equally possible for entirely different species to be humane. For this purpose I'll refer to Dictionary.com's definition of humane: characterized by tenderness, compassion, and sympathy for people and animals, especially for the suffering or distressed. I know my dogs and cats seem very compassionate towards each other. When my older dog broke her leg, the younger slowed down to help her. When one of my old cats died, the others sat and mourned for hours, and I often catch them sitting quietly in her burial place. They also seem to realize when I am sad, and will often give extra attention in those situations. In this way my pets are humane without being human. Please correct me if I am wrong, but from my (probably incorrect) comprehension of your video, I feel that the definition for human need not be expanded.

Great video! I like how you are getting more in depth with your topics. What do you think would happen if Neanderthals, Denisovans and the other subspecies were alive today. Would we be separate but equal with them, would we segregate them, would they segregate us, or would we coexist with them! You should suggest this topic to Alternate History Hub.
@BamaFanEdge
@BamaFanEdge 9 жыл бұрын
Infohub Based on our history, I think we can safely assume that we would capture and buy and sell them to do work that is unfit for us "proper" humans. Then if by some chance we considered them human enough to be emancipated and afforded civil liberties, we would most definitely whitewash our role in their oppression by claiming they were too uncivilized to care for themselves anyways. We would stereotype them and cast them in a negative light so that any misfortune they endure is deserved and we are the righteous ones for allowing them exist along side of us.And our cops would shoot them.
@theinfohub206
@theinfohub206 9 жыл бұрын
Would they do the same to us? Neanderthals did have stronger bodies and bigger brains.
@thinkfact
@thinkfact 9 жыл бұрын
Infohub I'm not going to lie but I think it wouldn't be very pretty. We would probably either separate each other, or attempt to make slaves and do horrible things to one another. If they did manage to survive to a modern era like today I feel that they would be much more excepted but I fear there is a strong potential it would be an "us vs them" perspective as time went on. Early encounters it seemed to have been a relatively peaceful, but I doubt that would've been the case forever especially considering how much distraction we have done to ourselves. I've actually suggested this exact scenario to Cody at Alternate History Hub a few months ago for a potential collaboration, coincidentally enough. We were planning on doing it, but we never got around to it. But I'm still open to doing it though!
@thinkfact
@thinkfact 9 жыл бұрын
Infohub True, physically and is very likely mentally they were more capable than us. But what eventually would put humans on top is that we were more social. Humans interacted with each other much more often then Neanderthals. Because of that, you know they were originally more advanced than I us technologically our social behavior allowed us to bypass them, and even absorb them into our own populations. We outnumber them and there was simply wasn't a social construct involving saving their own kind. So they went extinct.

For me, the fact that "human" is more inclusive is probably not surprising. However, I am really curious what the key that lead us(Homo sapiens) to be more intelligent than the other "human"
@thinkfact
@thinkfact 9 жыл бұрын
chow siuping Definitely. Well one thing is, we don't know if we were smarter more intelligent. The reason why we were able to beat out to the other humanoids is partly due to our social lifestyles. Anatomically modern humans were much more social then Neanderthals. And that may simply have been due to specific factors as we evolved. Neanderthals and it's a very likely they had much better dexterity then us, they even had better technology than us for a while. But with social skills, ideas, technology, and skills spread like wildfire. And that is what most likely gave us a population edge that would come to allow us to absorb all competitors. Neanderthals were much more isolated, and whatever caused them to be less social than us lead to their downfall as we began leaving Africa.

Looking at the title, at first, I honestly thought this would be a video exploring if there could possibly be other human or humanlike species around the universe just like how in movies where they have humans in other planets and being native there. Or just to a more realistic term, some species that somehow evolved just like humans or similarly in other planets completely isolated from US humans.

In my opinion, for one to display human qualities, or be "humane", he/she/it must show compassion for others, at least of its own species. This reminds me of a ***** video that talked about our philosophy of what we considered to be human (I think, maybe I'm just making this up, memories get jumbled in my brain sometimes). Think Fact thoughts?

Pranav Eswaran Well we typically call somebody "inhumane" or nonhuman/monster as an insult. I think that's partly because we recognize good behavior in all reality is a very special thing we are capable of and truly be what should represent us as a whole. So when we have individuals who lack this, we try to separate them from us. In more modern times with the advent of understanding how the chemistry in our brain works and psychology, many individuals you have this lack of empathy tended to have psychological issues. Showing us that there is a true divide in terms of brain chemistry. But I guess the problem lies with who gets to make that call. Should all of human behavior be considered "humane" are only the behavior we think people should have? Tough questions. Thanks for the comment!

I think the word "human" itself should become obsolete, at least from a scientific perspective. Really nothing wrong with not being ambiguous and using scientific nomenclature.

Hey Dale Interesting video, I always had a very passionate interest in the history of our species and the Other sub spe- species like the Neanderthals. I always wondered as a kid how the world would be with a completely new sentinel species conflicting with us humans, how our history, politics, sciences arts and racial/species subjugation would have played out over modern times. Say, would it have been possible that the Neanderthals, in a completely different universe, might have dominated and lived an isolated life in the American continents, and lived in total separation to Homo sapiens and only when we found the new world, would we re-connect, so that we wouldn't inbreed till now and would still be different sub-species? One example is the sentinelese people living in the Andaman Area in the Indian ocean, and I read that they are so isolated to the rest of the species for god knows how long, *that they haven't invented fire yet*. I would love to see if they would become a different species if we don't interact with them for a few hundred thousand years. I would love to have you explore this subject more and make a video.

I wish we'd get a good definition of planet. And continent. And country. We have a lot of bad definitions. About race, even though it is possible for two people from different ethnic backgrounds to have more in common with each other than with other people from their respective ethnic backgrounds, that's still much less likely than them having more in common with their respective ethnic background. I think a study showed it being something like 1000-3000 times more likely for people to share more than 50% of genomes that have been identified as being different between races with the race they identify as rather than of another race. I would say that it is useful for people to identify differences between races, because these differences may affect likelihood for people to get certain diseases and the such, even though the differences are minor. We still have as much difference between races as asian dog breeds have with each other, and I wouldn't classify all of them as one breed :P

991woot119 Very interesting point. Most people in academia advise people identifying ancestery over the idea of race. Because race doesn't necessarily give you your correct biological association. Hispanic, Asian, Black, White, Caucasian, these are terms that place people into groups based off of certain observations but don't necessarily correctly provide the necessary context in terms of properly evaluating their actual ancestry. Hispanics and Asians include a very diverse array of individuals many of who do not have much in connection with each other. If you're ancestery is specified as being "X country order region" it would be much easier to identify you. Australian aboriginals and Africans are more separate biologically than Native Americans and East Asians, but unless they live in Oceana they typically get stuck together with Africans and census information. It's a complicated issue and people are constantly working on trying to find away for good clarification. But I believe along with many other people that using ancestry instead of race is the first step. :) Have a good one and thank you for the comment!

Think Fact Doing it based on ancestry would definitely be the best place to start, but that could end up splitting people into so many categories as for the distinction to become meaningless. And that distinction is how a lot of the scientific discussion on racial differences is done. Like the tidbit that people of African descent on average have a belly button that is 2 inches higher than people of European descent. Likely because Europeans got into agriculture much earlier, and so having a lower belly button, a disadvantage for running, wouldn't have been too bad for them. But I digress, in my completely non-expert opinion, I think around 8-20 ancestral groups would be best. This does take into account most major regional differences, and some larger minor ones, but doesn't take every tiny one into account. As always, thanks for your interesting replies. It's great to have an in-depth civil discussion on the internet, and even greater to have one with the creator of an educational series.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you so much for doing your homework on this subject. I know "certain people" don't want to admit that they share genetic material with "certain other people", and they just have to understand that you are dealing with thousands upon thousands of years of genetic sharing, and damn near anything was possible. And when it comes down to it, we are all just beautiful humans . Thank you for doing this.

Since human means person, it's not necessarily limited to homo sapien sapiens. All of the aliens featured in sci-fi like Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate SG-1, the original Galactica & others are people, with personal names & species-specific languages, customs, religions, attire, & cultures. Since they are people, they're human!

I think at the time they did the best they can, only it was not much information, they creating everything from nothing, how to live together or medicine. We just upgrade, have something to learn from past over and over again. Not from far long, but from what you have now. So did our parents, so did grandparents and so on... Also i think people can understand that a lot of things what animal do, logical too. Logical from their point of view, and any living organisms have that kind of behavior
