This is what I love about this channel. It touches on Chinese practices and culture, which sets it apart from many other "Learning Chinese" videos. I like Richard's caution that distinguishes between learning and using. Being aware and learning some of the "unmentionable" Chinese lingo is good, but using them in everyday conversation is generally frown upon.

Thank you guys. we are all stereotypes. So no one is safe in this game. But Free spirit is the most important thing and the narrative that we are telling you about nationality and origins is to me just by the way. Thank you guys and stay alert and curious.
Super interesting to hear your perspectives of typical Chinese and how you guys compare. I would love if you guys did an entire episode on the concept of 面子 as there really are a lot of different elements. 然后聊对于“那个”挺搞笑哈哈哈 Thanks guys!

Wink, wink! I detect a difference in the approach on "intimate expressions and conversation" between Li Can (married) and the other two single teacher. I get the impression Li Can enjoys loving, open and candid conversation with his wife in the intimate relationship they have. 👏👏👏

I would also love to know more about 面子. When Uncle Richard paid for his student’s friends’ dinner - how would he feel if one of them had secretly put the owed money in his coat pocket? Would that have made him feel like he lost more 面子 or would he be happy to have both the 面子 *and* the 钱? I’m from The Netherlands and we’re super direct so I definitely struggle to understand the extent of politeness. I definitely would have stopped offering you food if you said you weren’t hungry (though I would also give you permission to help yourself although I now wonder if you would actually allow yourself to do so). I live in the UK and the British are also very indirect and polite. I always laugh when I have to be the first person to open a packet of snacks at a gathering because the Brits don’t want to be the first to eat from an unopened bag or box but I feel it’s rude to leave snacks entirely untouched because the host bought them for our enjoyment. Cultural differences are very interesting!
