For my current job I make WordPress and Shopify websites for my employer (which is in manufacturing) partners. I know I make more than a lot of React developers (this job is paying me 40,000 more than the offer I got to be a react dev). So unless my paycheck is lying we are real developers.

Hahaha! Get em Girl! WordPress is the solution for most business concerns. You need to be able to troubleshoot things like when a sight is bricked, hacked, or you have theme issues that combat functionality.

My company wants to train me to learn the dev environment stack which is tailwind, alpine js, php and laravel. I'm beyond thankful bevause I wouldn't have this job if it was for God and you Joe! Even the 'drag & drop' themes, they require you to know html, css, jquery, and php in order to get the layout of the page that the designer gives you. Need to know media queries, too. You are still coding in drag and drop themes. They help, but to get the look of the site right across all devices, you really need to know how to code. And the drag and drop themes, most likely, are written in PHP and React JS. Wordpress core is going into ReactJS.

You can become a web designer / UX / UI Designer or even a Digital Media Specialist or SEO Specialist from a Content Editor. You could specialize in improving website SEO...A lot of small to mid size companies will pay big bucks for a good SEO Specialist...but you need a lot of credible referals. In that path, you will likely run into Salesforce and Shopify too. You could also niche down and become a developer of a specific platform (WordPress Developer, Shopify Developer, Magento Developer, Salesforce Administrator, Contentful Developer, etc)

Thanks for clearing this misconception up Joe! I’m a Wordpress developer and it’s much more than just a drag and drop editor. I develop custom themes and hook up forms to crms like sales force using web hooks etc. use html css javascript jquery php and also the rest api Wordpress spits out to hook into next js is powerful. Btw it pays the bills. 😂

I started with wordpress. Every new site presented a new challenge that took me to learn new things, eventually I learned javascript, vue, react, then moved to python. My current stack is django and vue (flutter for mobile apps), but it all started with WordPress.

It depends. Some WordPress developers are not hard coders and Rely on advanced page builders which is not wrong because page builders make development easier. There are WordPress developers who fully customize templates, create headless WordPress, and do plugin development. In my opinion, a WordPress developer can customize themes or can create a custom plugin, convert any design requested by clients to a website, and fix and troubleshoot errors and issues. He is a web developer. To create a website whether based on templates or custom. U need an understanding of HTML, Javascript, CSS PHP, and MySQL most of the time. That's all!
