You are ever a blessing to us. This was exactly what I needed to hear. I catch myself lying about things and have prayed on it to stop, but still struggle. I had not tied it to hypocrisy (not so bright over here) ;) in the way you lay out and that feels like a big 'aha!' How freeing it would be to simply be the person God made me to be! God bless you Fr Columba every day, and all the souls who make this channel possible.

Same here, different kind of vanity tho. Let's pray deeply to be healed from this. I realized my motives were always to get a certain reaction from people, then a thought came in, what if I just live with God all the time? Just talking to Him always, doing stuff for Him, being honest and not caring too much about if people won't be as interested in me or dismiss me. Just a quiet life with God. I think He would accept me even when my ugly parts showed up. Thought I'd share.

"Come unto Me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest" are the very Words that, after a great deal of walking around the edge of the pond, called me and caused me to put my feet into the water and join the Church almost 22 years ago and resting in Him to me is best expressed in the words of a community of Carmelites, "Alone with God, with God alone" which might sound retreatist to some but there it is....

seconds ago I think this topic is a very deep one, and because of it, it is imperative to ask the Holy Spirit for help in this matter, otherwise Satan can take advantage of it and make a person think, that because he/she is not good enough,, it would be better to stop trying, also for fear of falling into hypocrisy. A person can stop doing good or saying a word of encouragement to someone , for fear of falling into hypocrisy. But here is where the trap lays. It is better to do good even when we don’t feel it, so that in time we may acquire the grace and then feel it for real. The truth is that one must always remember that we are nothing and lack everything. All good things Come from the creator. Even those talents that we are born with. The ones that we claim to be ours. Once a person has this concept down,, then he/she won’t feel bad when things don’t workout in a perfect way. Discouragement after falling is a sign of pride. Therefore, even when we don’t feel like doing the right thing,, even when we don’t feel like being nice to someone, we should still do so. Do that very thing, you don’t want to do. This is not hypocrisy. This is called dying to oneself. For example, today I didn’t want to share my blueberries and salmon with someone, because I always do it with her. This time, I thought to myself, why doesn’t she bring her own food. 🙄 I found myself eating the blueberries as fast as I could, so that I wouldn’t have to share them. Then I felt bad about this, for not having the virtue of sharing. I said to the Lord, look how much I lack! Then, I asked Him for the virtue and shared not only my blueberries but my salmon and my cherries, all against my will. With the hope that the Lord will give me His grace. I went against my flesh sinful desire of being selfish. This is not hypocrisy. It took an act of the will and dying to oneself, so that my heart would be ready to accept the grace of God, so that the next time, sharing something with someone would be an easy. task, Thanks to the grace given by God. This is how grace attaches to the receptor site of our hearts. The Lord is willing to give His graces to us, but we must make ourselves ready. Once we acquire the grace, life is easier. Everything seems like with effort. It’s easy to forgive, it’s easy to share, it’s easy to be patient, etc

Delighted to read that story, and it's something that I'm sure we all can relate to as sinners. Yet goodness and virtue persevere if we so choose, especially when we don't feel like it! Like Nike says, "Just Do It".

I wonder where the admonition about "pearls before swine" applies to this subject? Only speaking for myself, I have been at business events (which were compulsory) where some colleagues maybe had a bit too much to drink were taking digs at the church and i hesitated correcting them because I judged that whatever I said would receive strong , drunken, opposition as opposed to being an opportunity to provide whatever clarity I was able. It definitely would not have been productive considering the current mood and atmosphere. Was that right judgement?

Vanity - I care a lot about the validation of others. It can be hard for me to make decisions without approval from family members. If a family member disagrees with me I become upset. I wish I were perfect so no one could criticize me. I am guilty of people-pleasing and trying to agree with everyone. I am aware I can certain aspects of my personality to appease certain people. I am fearful of my honest feelings and stances on certain issues. I do not want conflict. Sometimes I do not know what I believe because I am so busy listening to everyone and agreeing with everyone. I am an extreme procrastinator with my earthly duties. Laziness, vanity, and envy are my strongholds. I prefer to hide my faith because I do not want to seem self-righteous or like I am evangelizing. I use foul language so it probably does not fit my Christian identity.
