A friend told me a joke about fiddles and violins once. It's probably from an internet meme or something. "What is the difference between a violin and a fiddle?" You have to think a bit outside of the box here to get the punch line: "A violin has never had beer spilled on it." The origin of this being that traditional fiddlers hung out in bars/pubs everywhere. Often drinking and playing their fiddle/violin while entertaining other drunk patrons. It's an inevitable thing, at some point some patron of that bar is going to get too excited and drunk that they will spill beer or whatever alcohol on the fiddle/violin. Beer is just traditionally the drink of choice for many working-class people worldwide so I guess that's how that joke was made. It's funny because I've seen it happen. Never mix alcohol and expensive instruments! Many antique violins that have water/liquid damage are probably ones that have been used with alcohol involved. I have played my violin alone in my room a bit drunk, but I never leave the alcohol bottles anywhere near the violin lol.

I understand that when they made that " Fiddler On The Roof" movie they got a cheap violin out of a Pawn Shop so it would have that cheap fiddle sound.

I must say that since joining JVA a short while ago, I have been most attracted to fiddle music - perhaps it’s to do with my Irish roots! That said, I doubt that I could make inroads into fiddle playing without a solid grounding in violin playing. So, I’m doing my best to complete a good rendition of May Song (which is turning into April, May and perhaps June Song at my level of proficiency) and I’m also trying to learn The Kesh!! I’m having a lot of fun, not taking myself TOO seriously! Julia, that was the most comprehensive explanation of the differences between fiddle and violin that I have have heard to date. Thank you and the JVA team so much for all your effort and hard work!!

I think you nailed it best when you said folk people don’t think classical players can improvise, they have to have sheet music and classical people say folk players can’t read the sheet music they can only improvise. I have been around both players for a long time. Both think their style is better than the others. If they would all open up to other styles and techniques both sides would up their game. Great video.

One thing I have noticed over the years is the difference between a violinist and a fiddler is in violin music the entire piece of music is played on each string one part at a time while as fiddlers will use chords using 2 or more strings in their music. Now the violinist also prefer to use the high bridge which allows for playing one string at a time more accurately while the fiddle has the lmedium or low bridge which allows for playing two or more strings at a time resulting in two distinct styles of music.

I am a beginner who wants to learn to play both. I love to listen to both classical and folk. Folk music definitely makes you want to move your feet. I want to learn the technics of classical. I am not good at learning by ear. I need the notes to play. I love the way I can pick up a hymn book and play the songs. I am trying to learn vibrato to make the hymn playing sound nicer.

Thank you for this, you’ve given me some inspiration. I’ve regretted not learning to play the fiddle for many years and now I’m taking part in a lot of open mic/jam sessions with my acoustic guitar I’m seeing a lot of folk fiddle players joining in and it adds so much to songs. I’d love to be able to accompany with a fiddle myself but I’m worried it will be too much for me to learn. Would a teacher be able to teach me to do this without having to learn scales/theory etc?

I can be possible I guess if you simply learn violin fingerings, but you would have to play scales to play well, they help you with intonation and hearing if you are playing in tune. In theory..

I've been wanting to learn to play this machine for decades finally I have inspired my daughter(9yo) to learn perhaps she will teach me. The late Itzak Perelman used to affectionately refer to his violinist contemporaries as fiddlers. When he did that it was just plain cute 🤣 considering who they were. A charming example for your followers of fiddling would be the Celtic fiddling as performed by Mairead Nesbitt, videos on KZbin.

I agree. For me, it’s all in the genre of music. As the old adage goes, “The violin is to fancy as the fiddle is to folksy.” And when the violin is played as a fiddle, as you pointed out, it can be played with more flexibility and exclusively in the first position with very little or no vibrato. 😊 BTW: Of the fourteen known positions of the violin, I play the violin only in the first position with a "finger vibrato." Therefore, I consider myself a fiddle player and not a violin player. Besides, when I play "fiddle tunes" on my "fiddle," it complements both my concertina and diatonic harmonicas. 👌 😉 🎻♫ In light of your analysis, is it fair to say that all violin players are fiddle players, but not all fiddle players are violin players? 😐

You are definitely playing a Violin! It sounds very nice and pure where a lot of fiddlers have gritty sounding instruments and they tend to be the lower end of the $$ spectrum. Your instrument sounds very good to me! I bought my fiddle from a place in Chapel Hill North Carolina, and it was a little over 1000$ about 10 years ago. So the old jokes are "it's a fiddle when I play it, and a violin when I go to sell it!" and other jokes about the price of the instrument yet Kenny Baker played a original Guarneri Violin he got from Roy Acuff or so I have been told by others... I think another difference is reading music, most fiddlers play and learn by "rote" and they don't really use written music during a performance. Of course the Concert Violinist usually memorizes their parts as well. I tend to use music sometimes to learn a song, and hardly ever while performing. I can read music though, I was in the Orchestra and the Stage Band in the USA. (I was a String Bass and Electric Bass player though before I learned Bluegrass Fiddle in my adult years) You have a very good tone, and intonation so Fiddle stuff would probably seem easy at first until you got to the professional level, then it get's a bit trickier. Mark O'Connor would offer a great challenge for most Violinists to master his style, skills and abilities. It's difficult to switch between the 2 styles for most players. So that's why they call us Fiddle Players, and Orchestral players Violinists... though most people don't know the differences! Then Bluegrass Fiddle and Irish Fiddle, etc... so many different styles to choose from! Enjoyed the video...

@@Violinspiration Thank you, I am sort in between as I was formally trained on the String Bass and read music, yet also "by rote" which is simply copying what you hear on a record or tape, video, etc... I also play the banjo which definitely puts me into the fiddler category! Lol... Have a good day, thanks for getting back to me. i came here b/c a friend described a dream where a boy demo'd to his parents how his bow could do certain things humans can't do in reality. This video helped me understand a little bit about this. Since neither of us play. In the dream a folk song was played on a "violin". I guess the bow is still called a bow whether they are a fiddler or a violinist?

My only personal observation as a listener is that the violin seems to speak like the voice of a man conveying deep emotion. And the guitar also can sound like a person talking. I kinda binge-watched your website and channel trying to understand the instrument for the purpose of interpreting my friends' dream. What is it called when your student has to learn different angles of the bow? Like tilting or the length needed to strike across? at different degrees? Does that have a term? Are there any other musical inst. out there that require string-on-strings? or just the violin? Isn't that what a bow is?-- finer soft natural strings onto coarse metal strings??? Could you write a blog sometime on how the human voicebox differs or is similar to stringed instruments & the range of sounds they each are capable of producing?

Actually a violin is a type of fiddle. The world fiddle predates the violin and includes any instrument with strings that is played with a bow.
