Producers hire beatmakers
@kvmoore12 жыл бұрын
No Bolo, you are not trippin'. I totally agree with you 100% as far as what a producer is. I knew what a producer was 20 years ago and I don't think anyone else could have explained it better. Well said!!! Today, I consider myself a beat maker because mostly what I do now is make beats. With that said, I have not only made the beats but also recorded people in the past (at the time when I did have a vocal booth in my home studio to record someone in) and gave constructive feedback to the vocalist in an effort to improve not only their performance but also the overall sound of the record. Sometimes, that involved the artists making some adjustments to the lyrics and rewriting some things, even if it's just adding a couple of lines to fit the structure of the arrangement to complete a verse, or changing the lyrics to improve the clarity and pronunciation of words during delivery in such a way the words would also "fit the flow." In those situations I would say I was a producer. If I ever get the opportunity work with an artist again DURING the recording process while in a studio, then I would become a producer again.

4:44 Thank you Bolo Da Producer. What you said here is the original meaning of the job of a producer. As an young artist I was produced by producers who were also engineers and producers who financed the project and gave their ideas for the artists and musicians to create what they wanted. When I started producing I couldn't make a beat or engineer, but I knew from learning from my old producers how to put together a team who could do what I needed to get the project done. Just making the beat is what a beat maker of a group of musicians do. Unless it's their project and they are taking it all the way to either release or presenting it to the label then they are only the beat maker/musician. Thanks for doing this video

@@GODKINGROLO I can think of quite a few old school Reggae producers who didn't build the beats or engineer the sessions but they were the ones who made the shit happen and directed how it was going to go. When I started producing that's what I did too and I released tracks that I produced using musicians and artists, on twelve inch vinyl in the UK and seven inch vinyl in Jamaica. Some producers wear more than one hat and they can engineer, make beats, are the artist themselves. They are all separate jobs though. Just because you made the beat or sang the song doesn't make you the producer. The one who puts everything together and controls the direction that it goes, historically has been credited as the producer. Sorry if the truth hurts but if you embrace it you can put on more than one hat too.

A producer is some one who puts sounds and ideas either made by them selfs or some one else and release it on any public platform for free or paid, that's it. Anything else like engineering, song writing, create the music, singing are all separate things and not production but often today's producers do these things also.

@@GODKINGROLO he’s right. A producer has his hands in the entirety of the fleshing out the song, even if he didn’t write the song or didn’t play any instruments. He puts it all together and fleshes out the song until it’s just right. The producer position was out way before hip hop had existed and had rules. Quincy Jones wasn’t going around playing all of the instruments. His job was to take what was already written and/or already made into the next level.

Good topic bro. Never considered myself a producer, but I guess I just might be. Didn't realize that making those recording decisions was the difference but it makes plenty of sense. Telling an artist to add emphasis or make their verse no more than 16 bars, etc. Doing it by yourself gives a person a bunch of hats to have to wear. You'll end up producing by default.

Really great explanation! Alot of people need to watch this. I kind of like to think of myself like an executive producer or creative director because I have a vision for a sample pack, and then I hire a producer/beat maker to create the sound that's in my head, often times there's a bit of iteration after I give my notes, then I proceed to create the box art, organize the files, create apple loops, create product page, and market it out for sale.

I do both. I CONSTANTLY make beats, but when it comes time to put together a project, whether it's a beat album, a remix, a track for/with an artist, or an album full of vocals, I go through those tons of beats to decide which ones will fit and then actually "produce them" in order for a release.

You are 100 percent right. I am a beat maker. Since I have not recorded a song with an artist yet. I am making beats. Even when I start as a recording artist if I lack the skills to produce a slide then I’m still a beat maker. However, the term is limiting the term composers might be better and co songwriter. Reason if you sell your beat and get it placed while retaining publishing the PRO you are affiliated with will regard you as a songwriter. Many of us who are beat makers either haven’t or don’t have skills to run a session( that includes me) Depending on the genre a vocal producer and/or coach might be needed. Many beat makers might need a good engineer and working knowledge of the differences between recording, mixing and mastering. Often we try to wear many hats and not putting the record first. We need to know the difference between song, demo and record. A lot of what we do as beat makers is pre production even if an artist records vocals with us and we set levels and the artist leaves with a two track reference it is not a record. Therefore the song is not produced.
@RoomAtTheTopStudio2 жыл бұрын
The beat maker is the composer, the lyricist is the songwriter. The publishing is split fifty fifty between the two. That can be very lucrative so I don't see why people think beat makers is not a good title to have.

I work with artists in the studio, vocal produce, comp vocals / choose the best takes, write lyrics, come up with melodies & harmonies, record references, and arrange songs which makes me a producer. I'm also a recording, editing and mixing engineer. Different situations call for different jobs. Sometimes I get a call to just do a beat and send it over, and other times I get to be in the studio with the artist and be a part of the whole process.

As far as the new generation,its mainly a beat maker and or a loop maker run right now.Rappers think they better than the beat or beat maker so they dont even want to be produced 😂. Musicians don’t get together and say, “let’s make a beat!”. They say, “let’s play a I-IV-V in E”, or “I came up with a riff or bass line, or a chord progression let’s work on this”.

Cool subject Bolo, One the greatest examples of record producer is Berry Gordy of Motown and of course Quincy Jones, a jazz musician from the era of Be Bop along with Dizzy Guilespe, many others, produced them all, people like Sinatra, Ray Charles! in the 60's, he A&R'd & produced rock n Roll hits for A&M records and HIT! decades later 'Off the Wall' with Michael Jackson, George Benson. Later on the 'Back on the Block' album with ice T, Big Daddy Kane, Chaka Khan, Tevin Cambell, Heavy D, Kool moe dee, Melle Mel and many others and the album HIT! I come from the Singer, Songwriter, musician school, who have self produced and HIT a few times, I'm sorry, I've seen Prince, Stevie, Phil Collins do so I had to go there but I look around today and see people just kicking beats like we did in the 80's on drum machines but on laptops and talk about their beats like it's a symphony WOW! I'm from a famous 70's Hit funk band, it took a while before I really, really called myself an entertainer, we had to Pay dues. My point is , We need to take time to study, read and learn before we start giving ourselves heavy titles. Dr Dre, a master of Hip Hop but holds the likes of Quincy Jones real High for a good reason. We are all trying a TING but let's be honest and real. Blessings to you Bolo!🙏 Oh! and don't forget executive producers 🙈🙏

This is why there is a war going on between artists and "BEATMAKERS". You have 1-4 "BEATMAKERS" on 1 beat but want "PRODUCER" royalties and credits . This is why "ARTISTS" communicate there frustration (aka Bobby Shmurda rant) on why they will not pay or give "BEATMAKERS" these royalties, or high payment costs because you are not there grinding the song building process. I'm telling you now, beatmaking will become A.I driven for artist in 5 years max because, why deal with a "BEATMAKER" when you can have your own computer make songs for you. The "BEATMAKER" will be replaced by A.I for the mere fact that the "ARTIST" can be paid for performance, production, sync, and print, all from a computer A.I program that took 3 minutes to create an entire beat😂

Musicians existed before record producers, even though some musicians also happen to become great record producers. Prince, Jimmy Page, Rick James, Maurice White, and Curtis Mayfield are a few that come to mind. But record producers didn’t exist until the creation of the record INDUSTRY. Nothing I do musically is for the primary purpose of becoming a product, I do it because I absolutely love music. The love of the art is primary for me.

I feel like if you can play the keys and compose melodies that puts you in the producer box. It’s a fine line to walk on. You still by logic produced the beat. People wanna take your credit away. Is that a selfish way to think? It’s different kinds of quarterbacks but they’re still in the position of quarterback. I’ll go further to say that if someone doesn’t put their hands on a drum machine or piano keys and is involved with the process that makes them the director/composer, not really producer. They basically do the same thing a movie director does. Pharrell for example is a producer/director.

Then open some loop packs add that in. Walla im a producer. Beat maker. You are using drum machines banging your drums in. You know how to layer sounds. You are using synths to play your melody and chords. You know some music theory and how to create patches from scratch. Producer can take an artist into a studio and come out with a full arranged song. Intro. Verse chorus etc. They know what to add. What to take away. What needs to be louder. What needs to be more in the background. Etc. Most ppl today are programmers. Takes no skill anymore. Today's plugins randomize a chord progression for you drag it in. Randomize a drum track for you drag it in. We now have programs that mix for you. Bolo keep doing these vids they are some of the best Ive seen on a channel in a long time.

I track record and mix Audio. and edit. Plus create melodies and beats. Mix it all down to a stereo mix. And do some light mastering. Plus help the artist bring their idea to life. To the best of my ability. Plus fix technical problems. in the studio.

I produce beats...doesn't make me a producer. I'm perfectly happy being a beat maker. A perfect example of an iconic producer is Jimmy Iovine. If you want to understand what a producer does I strongly recommend watching The Defiant Ones documentary. Bolo you summed it up perfectly with Puff.

Interesting question bro, before I watch the vid imma say im a producer and a beat maker as well. Feel like makes you a beat maker is obviously just beat making and selling beats. But what makes you a producer is being in the studio sessions with artists and actually producing their track exclusively with them, whether ur recording mixing n mastering as well or just in the studio actually producing the song from scratch with the artists I feel like actually being in the studio with the artist exclusively is what makes u a producer

The term you're looking for is 'record producer'. but even among instrumental 'producers' there are those who produce their own original audio and those who use other people's audio (sample packs). the former being a music producer and the latter being a beatmaker.

If you put music together mix and master and release publicly on any any platform including KZbin, Soundcloud and Spotify or sell your work you are a producer.

So how about this, what is a "composer" ? Is a composer something separate from a beat maker and producer or is that title interchangeable with beat maker?
