It's fine that you only use a couple of sets of pencils you like and use.. I actually rehomed all of my non-open stock materials over the past year or two, cutting my collection down to about a third of what it was, and I don't regret it. Everything I have now is good quality and can be replaced as needed. It's a constant battle with the "want monster" but having the prerequisite that it has to be sold open stock makes that easier.

I'm definitely a swatcher. I NEED my swatches, they are a mandatory part of my coloring process. I find they make my coloring faster, reduce mistakes, encourage the use of colors I woudn't normally reach for, and help me keep track of what everything is for reordering purposes. Often by the time an item is worn out it's extremely difficult to identify it without a good accurate swatch to compare it to. I don't have a swatch book, I color in bed so I have all my supplies in some sort of portable container and the swatch sheet goes in each one so it's at hand every time I use it. I swatch everything, on the paper I use to color on (my go-to base paper is Neenah Bristol Cardstock, and I use the smoother side). I find products can look very different on different types of paper so it's important to have the same basic type of paper you will actually be using. I'm very OCD about color order, so I typically find a premade swatch sheet if I can for convenience (I also find them great resources for keeping track of the colors I have and those I may want to get in the future), swatch it all, cut them apart and sort them in what I consider the correct color families, broken down by warm/cool/etc within those color families, and then from light to dark within those sections. It's a whole process that can take an hour or more just for the sorting. Then I print off a blank swatch sheet of the appropriate size and reswatch them in their final form, and install them in their case in that order. I get most of my premades from Emily Illustrators website, she has a huge collection, and most of my blanks from Tammie Ann Creatives website. Occasionally I have to search for odd products via Google. I'm currently looking for a good swatch chart for Sakura gelly roll pens if anyone knows of one.. all the ones I've been able to find are out of date and don't include all the colors currently available. I'd also love one for Pentel.

I used to swatch, but have found that I use my swatches less and less because I somehow have memorized all my supplies lol. I mean I have used them so much I know which shades of red or blue I want without checking the swatches. But what has grown is my list of combos I used and fell in love with, my little notebook is filling up fast with those!

You had me sold on that binder but sadly I couldn't find it on Amazon 😢

Love the removable pages. Went to Amazon and ordered this system. I swatch all my pencils and markers but hate having to keep opening and closing the ring notebook they are in. I over organize things and spend too much time in getting them just the way I want them.

I have swatches of all my pencils and other mediums. I should be writing down the color combos that I like though. Honestly, I would give you money to purchase the ones you have.😁 Great video Shelly! Thank you for sharing!

Great video. You are so organized. I have not previously liked swatching my supplies. However, after I bought the 320 Ohulu Honolulu Alcohol Markers and the sheet came with it, I enjoyed that. I'm not sure how much I would enjoy it if I had to make a DIY chart myself. 😂

Hi Shelly, I love swatching all my mediums, it's so relaxing to me. I am so impressed by how organized you are, you have inspired to finish my organizing my books on my new shelves lol. This was fun to watch. Thank you so much for sharing! 🤗💗

I have the majority of my big sets swatched, and I do have a book I pull out from time to time. But honestly, as I've gone along and my style has evolved...I've found swatching incredibly tedious. Sometimes if I'm really unsure of the supply, or I want to see how it performs I'll do a small swatch of a few colors. But I've largely stopped. Most of the supplies I use regularly I just kind of know. I'm very much in a season of "let's eyeball it and see how it works and if we don't like it, add something else" season of my art life.

I’m a “swatcher” too and I have various albums and swatch methods that I create and use. I love seeing other people’s methods and get inspiration 😊For colour pencils I mainly use little swatch cards I keep together with a binder ring. I note colour combinations for the pages I do but I hardly ever refer back to them - like you I make them up while colouring!

Your swatch book is very neat and organised, something I aspire to! My swatch book is much less organised and still incomplete, but I also keep a swatch chart in the case with each marker and pencil set. I have found this so very useful for picking colours on the go.

I love swatching. Simply relaxing 😊. Color charts, family charts, now making key rings with color charts, love it. I laminate all my charts, then they go in a binder.

I am definitely a swatcher. I have been known to swatch a set again even if I already have a swatch chart. I keep one set in a binder and one with each medium. So, my Polychromos has a chart in the case and I have one next to me on the table. If one of them gets a little dirty, I will swatch it again. Swatching is very relaxing to me. I really love your swatch book. I tried to find it on Amazon, but couldn't find it. That would be a fantastic way to keep them all together. Thanks for the informative video.

I’m a swatcher but I’m like you and own just a few mediums in addition to my main Prismas and Inktense. I love the idea of swatching hair, face, eyes and other objects. I’ll have to do that!! Thank you for sharing. ❤

Yes, there is a set #18 in Tim Holtz's mini Distress Inks....The entire palette is now complete and there will not be anymore new colors now....unless Tim changes his mind , of course.

No, I am most definitely not a swatcher, and even when I have I don’t look at them 🤣 I am definitely from the school of “fly by the seat of my pants “! Occasionally I think I should be better organised but it never happens (I just seem to remember my favourites), your organisational skills are admirable ❤

I love swatching. Do you offer the pages with hair, face, eyes and lips? I have been looking for something like that. So I can practice before doing the actual coloring page

I love the idea of being able to pull the binder sheet out so easily. Could you give an Amazon link for this product? I tried looking for it and was unsuccessful. I currently have all my swatches in a 3 ring binder and I am looking for an alternative. Swatching for me is the only way I can keep track of all my color choices. Thank you for sharing how you organize.

I have the link in the description box (non affiliate). Unfortunately I have spent quite some time look on Amazon US and couldn't find this folder nor any that resemble it. So I only have the Amazon UK link in the description box. 💗

Hi dear, thanks for sharing your approach to swatching. So what paper do you use for swatching? Regular printer paper or some "special" paper? Thanks for reply 💝
@shelscolouringjourney2 ай бұрын
Hello! Yes I use regular printer paper for my swatching of pencils. For paints, watercolour paper. And for my colour combos I have used Neenah card stock. 🤗💗

I love seeing your swatches. It is so incredibly helpful and everyone really should do it. I have several set of pencils and I did swatch them at the start of my colouring journey, but the more recent ones I haven’t. … to be honest, I hate the thought of doing it. Ive never enjoyed it. I just want to start using them & find it tedious 😂🙈 I do have a folder with sleeves like you of my swatches though- I feel exactly the same! Having it in a book wouldn’t work for me, I’m also ocd. love looking at completed charts for obvious reasons ☺️ I do like Keeping track of the pencils/ blends I have used to colour certain pages and items etc. But again, I feel like it sometimes interrupts the ‘flow’ if that makes? Thank you so much ☺️ Edit so sorry- May I ask, did you use credit card or PayPal on Aladdin? Thank you !

I know some artists keep their swatches in a central location. For me, I find it works better if I keep the swatches with the product. I swatch everything so I know if there are any problems with certain colors.

@lucylu598 ай бұрын
No, I have done them, but I never referenced them. So I doubt I will do them in the future. I feel like swatchbooks and journals/diaries are just a lot of fuss for a creative hobby. I can see it if you are a content creator, but not just a colorist.

I don't like Black Widow either.. it's not just you. It may seem that way since they had a massive social media advertising program going and everyone was getting them for free and raving about them. They are very inconsistent in texture ranging from soft to extremely hard with no rhyme or reason, poor quality construction, they don't seem to blend or layer well, and I find the color palette to be very hit or miss with many missing colors and colors that are almost identical at the same time. I bought the entire set too.. huge mistake especially when you realize how much they cost all together and no easily or affordably accessible open stock ($3 each and shipping from Australia lol). I could have bought a full set of AD or Polys for that. I gave mine away and counted it as a lesson learned.
