As we age we often have hearing loss. Many older ham operators lose the higher frequencies and find it difficult to follow oy pick out morse code.
Try this simple suggestion. It has helped many older operators and it might help you.

Very interesting. 72 here and I have been out of Amateur radio since 1996. Relearning CW is difficult. Your audio frequency demo made me aware that at 400 hz, (where my TS 440 is set) my left ear feels like I have water in it and it resonates with the dits and da’s. This is distracting, but at higher Hz, it doesn’t do it as much. No way to alter the tone hz so will use the RIT to adjust tone up. Thanks!

I was taught Morse professionally in the 1970s. We were told that the lower the audio frequency the easier it is to separate multiple stations in the hear/head. Example, the frequency difference of two signals only 100 Hz apart is much easier to separate in the head at 500 and 600 Hz than if they we say 1000 and 1100 Hz. This simple fact gets lost on may hams. The problem lies with basic audio filters that tend to have a fixed peak at say 750 Hz. These are OK, but not as good as lower frequencies. Also as we get older we loose the higher frequencies, so that's another reason why lower frequencies should be selected.

I agree completely. I wonder if it is a bad habit picked up from SSB where a pile-up breaking technique that I have seen on KZbin is to raise the frequency

Thanks for this advice on a simple but very effective tip/adjustment Keith. I found that some worked better than others for me but they weren't linear. 710 was good, surprising as I'm 72! Going down the next clearest was 540. Definitely worth trying, thanks again.

Glad it helped. I too have a couple of different tones I like besides 600, 550 works well too for me

Excellent advice. I even asked my audiologist what frequencies worked best for my hearing.
