when I first saw "are you being served?" I was clinically depressed in high school, & missed half my 9th grade yr bc of that. i would watch this show on PBS every night, & this was the ONLY thing that brought something close to a smile on my face, & eventually laughter followed. I was so fascinated by Mrs. Slocombe's different colored hair. To this day, I am thinking for this show helping to pull me out of the dark depths of depression. I continue to love this show to this day.

Mr Lucas was a very needed part of the cast. Mr Spooner was not a good replacement either. I didn't care for Spooner at all.
@christophers.85533 жыл бұрын
There are a few decent post-Lucas (Trevor Bannister) episodes, but despite the strong performances from the rest of the cast it was clear that they were out of ideas. I think It is more than just the change of cast---I think Bannister left because the show was sliding downhill. When they brought in Mike Berry as Mr. Spooner, they had him play the part in a more negative light; while Lucas was sarcastic and witty with Mrs. Slocombe---sometimes going too far--Spooner was just plain mean. With the arrival of Spooner and Old Mr. Grace for the 1981 season, in many ways they should have ended it there. There are still some good episodes in the last few seasons, but they now become the exception rather than the rule.

@Jen-cc9xk2 жыл бұрын
@@billgreen1861 I didn't say there wasn't a war in 1418. Peacock's intention was to insult Mrs Slocombe. I don't think Peacock would do that by implying she's 550 years old because that age is just ridiculous. It's much more insulting to imply she's 20 years older than she is, by referring to WW1 instead of the war she means, WW2. It was common to refer to WW1 as the 14-18 war. In addition, precisely how much of the audience, lower class and lower and middle-middle class, do you think would know of a short war in 1418? They would have thought he was pulling a date out of the air. But if they understand it to be WW1 they think, "Ha ha, he's having a dig at her by saying it's credible she was around during the First war!" Now go ahead, justify your "1418". I'll wait.

Thank you Kris. You're a jolly good man. I'm a big fan of these britcoms since the late Benny Hill. He was jolly good too. In fact, he was hilarious. Keep up the groovy work, baby!
@TheDoctor12254 жыл бұрын
Benny Hill was hysterical. Sad to think that after they chastised him for being so "sexist" and so "demeaning to women" that he'd be completely tame compared to what's on the average station, now.

Brian Goss I am more worried about the fact that you are 50 and you presume everyone is attracted to opposite sex.
@marinazagrai16235 жыл бұрын
@Brian Goss Oh my God...isn't there indeed. Having him in the women's section is just rip-stitching. I've seen a gay man serving in a "Forever 21" store and he had colorful knee-highs; he didn't try hiding his inclination so he looked utterly ridiculous - I'm also 50+ and I couldn't buy from such a sales person. It would just be too distracting after I entered the store.
@marinazagrai16235 жыл бұрын
@@atri-us That is your opinion. I walk with my husband but don't grab his butt, as I've seen gay couples do; that stuff should remain at home. Over exposure of that lifestyle (media/TV etc.) doesn't mean it's acceptable to the straight people!
