My "rules" for buying models and terrain are usually: "How many systems can I use it on?" If the answer is more than 2 then I usually get it. On 2 I consider if they're the ones I play the most. If so, I get it. If I can only use it for 1 system: I consider whether I could get a similar one that would let me use it on other systems, if so, I get the alternative. Of course, this is mostly when I don't have enough money to impulse buy. I've plenty of terrain and models, and the only game I play that I have to get -mostly- terrain just for it is Crisis Protocol. Urban setting on a larger scale. Also, MDF terrain is a godsend. I love my Killzones and Resin terrain, but MDF can fill out a table for the same price as plastic scatter pieces of plastic.

In short, personally - "no". Not only do I not think "can I use this in more than one game", I don't really even ask "can I use this in a game" anymore. Great video. My Fireforge Mongolians get used in Kings of War, One Page Rules, Frostgrave, Dragon Rampant, Oathmark, and Warlords of Evehwon. So 6 systems, my Northstar Gnolls get used in the same systems. Terrain of rocks, trees, and ruins can cover anywhere from fantasy, to historical, to 40k. GW's terrain is not only too expensive for what it is, but also too limited in reusability.

@theboldbear Dragon Rampant is a very nice little system. It is more geared towards fun & creativity, than following a rigid army list. Historical miniatures will also stand the test of time. I can recommend the A Song of Ice and Fire Starter Box. You get like around 100 models for this rank&phile game for a reasonable price (fun game btw). Quite good minis and really quite "normal" medieval looking. You can easily use them for Sagas or Kings of War and almost every other game with medieval or fantasy setting. The type of terrain I think is the most versatile: Middle-european half-timberd houses. You can use them for every historic game set in Europe between the middle ages and WWII (Black Powder, Sagas, Bolt Action, even Team Yankee). Even a game of AoS or other fantasy games do fit in there.

Another additional benefit to Warhammer Underworlds is that many, many of those very pretty figures can be used as Proxy-Models for AoS figures, mostly heroes and leaders. Short example: you're playing Nurgle and you reaaaaallllyyyyy want a Chaos Sorcerer in your army. You could grab the kit and try your best to kitbash a diseased mage out of it.. or you grab the new Nurgle warband for Underworlds which comes with an amazing diseased hag and you use her instead! Some Warbands, like the Godsworn Hunt, even come with models that make sense for OTHER Warcry Warbands. The big lad with the axe is a great second Headclaimer for Spire Tyrants for example. Or the small doggo is maybe a bit small, but in a pinch on a bigger base he's gonna be okay for a Rocktusk Prowler!

If you are really particular about it there are quite a few models fr GW that can span several games. A lot of imperial stuff can be used for kill team, 40k and Horus heresy. Some things might even find use in necromunda, and some necromunda stuff could be used in all other 40k related games... I especially like the idea of guard regiments pulled from necromunda hive gangs... Of course the most crossover able armies are chaos demons that flat out officially are the same models in AOS as in 40k, and then reach into some of the tangent games. And I've seen enough people using imperial guard in bolt action and historical armies as guardsmen in 40k to know that works well enough. Also medieval historical models have a place as free people's in AOS, and certainly as Bretonnians, Empire, and Dogs of war in pre-AOS Warhammer. and I suppose it should be obvious that a lot of these models can be used in various RPGs like DND, world of darkness, etc.

Limiting myself to a certain volume of terrain storage, so my pulp/gothic horror/fantasy terrain has to be interchangeable. Flat terrain/maps also help significantly.

Snow flock is a great leveller for terrain. I had some generic ww2 bombed out/ruined buildings, liberal application of snow flock and they do me for WW2, frostgrave, post apocalyptic (nuclear winter)

Though to be fair towards GW, at least the giant demons are for both 40K and AOS. That's pretty nice.

Great thing about historical minis is they work in fantasy aswell. Im building an army that from across the table looks historical but up close looks fantasy.

Wouldn't Necromunda, Space Hulk, etc. be the 40k shadespire? Though to be fair an underworlds for 40k could be cool too. Damn your awesome videos Atom!

Building an ork army with magnetized weapons to play in AOS and 40k. Of course I also had to get a resin printer to make the alternate weapons. And I had to buy an airbrush so I could paint them fast enough. I've made 14 boys so far, only cost me $500... if you don't count the Indomitus box I bought to get the codex.

I own and play (I know right, who actually plays miniature games) a core set of Warhammer Quest 1995. Couldn't get some of the original monster models, and I don't like the adventurer models (which I do have) so I bought Reaper miniatures for the monsters (giant rats, and Minotaurs) and I've bought miniatures from various companies, including GeeDubz, Reaper and Hasslefree Miniatures, for the adventurers to make them look like the iOS/Android/PC video game versions. Alternatives are out there, although it's dubious if they cost you significantly less.

i think the "smart buying" comes later in hobby live. at the point when your personal pile of shame has become so big that it physically hurts you. well in my case at least. im now down to three systems and a handfull of rpg´s and can use all of my miniatures in my rpg´s for either playermodells or enemy modells.

Yep, my minis are all only good in one game system. At least most of them are warband / skirmish scale. Only bigger games are legion and I suppose 40k since I bought indomitus to give it a try (though I swear I’m sticking to smaller games of 40k)

I try to make my models fit multiple funcions, sometimes within the same game system. Vampire counts/covenant or "Barrow Mounds" style Tomb Kings/Undying Dynasties, elves that could pass as either high or dark ones due to paintjob and iconography, using Perry miniatures Agincourt knights to do Bretonnians/historical army, etc. And almost everything pulls an extra shift as RPG models, particualrly if I play Warhammer FRP.

I try to be mindful of this. I picked up a set of tents from Renedra recently, I can use them for fantasy, western, or post apocalyptic. Likewise, the city terrain boards I bought could be used for 40k, modern, and post apocalyptic depending on the kind of buildings I put down.

I’m not done painting my Death Guard army which has been off and on for 2 years and just bought into the Indomitus Necrons two days ago. 🤣. I love that there are more new models for both those factions coming out soon!

Sadly, the two games I play are in very different scales (Adeptus Titanicus and Kill Team), so not much is compatible with both.

There is actually a 40k equivalent......kinda, which is Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress. All the models for Blackstone Fortress and its expansions have gotten 40k rules, the only problem is that a lot of them are now out of production (after an admittedly pretty limited run) and Blackstone Fortress itself is being discontinued after the next expansion gets released, which is kinda a bummer. Unclear atm if GW have another 40k Warhammer Quest game waiting in the wings (considering Blackstone has done pretty well I wouldn't be surprised) but for now its up in the air as to what the future is

I'm looking into starting Warhammer Age of Sigmar but buying in seems daunting with the overwhelming amount of choices and prices. What you said about the smaller games' models and units being usable for larger scale like Warcry and Age of Sigmar itself caught me. Can you elaborate and specify? How or where should I start with the smaller games and build up to Warcry and eventually Age of Sigmar? Thank you
