As an amateur who loves playing the harmonica, it is truly heartwarming to see other amateurs play. When all you see is professionals playing perfectly, it can be easy to get disheartened. Hey man. I watched a couple of your videos so far, including "top 5 ___" and "what harmonica should you buy" or something like that. My problem is that im new to all of this and im not really sure where to start and what to buy, since im not really interested in blues, but more something like pop rock. I've seen videos where people play harmonica over vocals of pop rock songs, or doing them as a whole. But you never mentioned something like that, or you did but i didn't find it(sorry). My main question is i guess, what type of harmonica is the best for that kind of music? And in what key. Or does the key depend on the key the song is written in? Could you please explain it to me, or point me to a video of yours, or someone else's, or where to look for it? (also if anyone else from the comments knows the answer to these questions id be really grateful)

I always understood these stages as 1. Unconscious incompetence. You are unaware (unconscious) that you are incompetent (able) ie you play it wrong but are unaware you are doing so. 2. Conscious incompetence - you are conscious / aware you are doing it wrong. 3. Conscious competence - you are now aware when you do it correctly 4. Unconscious competence - you are unaware ( don’t need to focus on it) that you are playing it correctly / well. Perfect example of 1) a new violinist not hearing he’s missing a note. 2) same violinist hearing it’s wrong (slides to correct pitch) 3) same violinist hearing when he is in key now 4) same violinist knowing he’ll hit the right note each time

yeah stage 3 is common for me - manage to scrape through a play along with a backing track then move on to the next thing, very rare to get to stage 4

T hanks again, liked the before and after vids .My problem is impatience as it takes a long time to learn a tune properly I wind up with a load of half learned tunes, fairly common problem I guess. The subject you are discussing here is a very important one indeed. That not a lot of people understand. Being an expert in a particular subject does not qualify you to be able to teach it. As an example, Dummies authors are always experts in their chosen subject. Often their Dummies books are absolutely impenetrable because of it. Winslow Yerxa with his Harmonica for Dummies book is absolutely impossible for beginners to follow. The exercises he lays out are really easy. As far as he is concerned they are really simple. And, they are... for an expert. But for a beginner they are impossible to follow. And there lies the problem. There's a good reason why Teacher Training Colleges exist. People need to be trained, how to teach. Ben at Bens Harp Club is another. He's an expert in harmonica, but when it comes to teaching others he hasn't got a clue, and stumbles around in the dark. As a consequence he loses most of his students. Me included. If you can tell me you have solved this problem, then I shall be happy to become one of your students.

Hey, Tomlin, thanks for your very informative and entertaining video. Loved your impersonations of the four levels of competence. Where does this idea come from? What you say really vibes with my own expeience: Once I get to that 3rd level of conscious competency, that is frequently where I in the past have left it. But none of my music instructors ever told me to push on. I could play the piece proficiently, which was the goal that was set. The level of unconscious competence makes absolute sense, though. I am in our Church's music ministry, where I play a number of instruments (primarily guitar). Now, we have a wide ranging repertoire, but when playing my favorites, I am definitely at the 4th level. I guess that my question to you would be whether it is possible to achieve the 4th level in comping/improv?

Nice explanation. Never thought of it that way. But i heard it in a saying from Teachers: "If someone wakes you up at 3am and says do xyz, you have to be able to jump out of bed and do it immediately" My son is falling in this pit trap. Were doing a sport and almost in evrey training session i hear: "but i do it already good, i dont need to train that anymore" I think a good remainder that youre not at level 4 is: If you have to think about how youre going to do what you want to do. Youre not there yet.

Very funny, but a lot of truth. Stage 3 1/2 for me which is better than i thought i was going to be. I keep doing nearly everything i have ever learned - both rote and improv - all the time. In very small doses in each session and across way too many things (because i get bored, and wouldn't keep up the practice), but i do return over and over again to to the same the things. Though i wouldn't say i'm at the "can't get it wrong" stage.

So when lerning a song is it better to get the timeing right at same times as lerning the notes or go back after lerning on the notoes. And work on timeing of notes then after u have all tge notes memeryrised

you should try to practice with a metranome going in the background at the proper tempo of the tune you are learning and just break down the tune into small groupings of notes from the tune and just focus on executing the notes and timing at the same time and don't rush you're self really try to get each grouping of notes you have pulled from that tune sounding good and in the right tempo before moving to the next grouping of notes and then once you have done that then when you move to the next grouping of notes you will play that part you had just gotten down everytime with that new grouping of notes u just move on to slowly turning those groupings of notes into a song and that will help you memorize that song to were you are going to be able to play it without even thinking about it that's what i was thought and what has worked for me hope that helps !!🙏😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
