It's normal for people to gather with others who have a similar cultural background when living abroad, so there's a chance people originally from the same country living in the same area know each other through cultural events of their community. Like here where I live we have an active German community with cultural activities, so I know at least most of the Germans who's kids are around the age of my kids. Nice, but don't be like new Greeks. Greece is the philosophy of the educated people. You see we say Hellas no Greece, Hel - las (Helium) is the Sun of the light, Hellas is the land of the illuminated people. And, of course, illuminated of knowledge and not Illuminati. So, a Hellenes could be everybody of us, if the purpose of his life becomes the study of nature, the philosophy. A philosopher, on the other hand, is every person who is a seeker. A searcher for the knowledge of who I am, what is the world I live in, and why I have to find answers to all these questions. With this slogan in mind, I see many Hellenes in human history who aren't Greeks and Greeks who aren't Hellenes.

The English language has more than 150000 words deriving from Greek. Additionally there are a lot of idioms going back to Greek, language, mythology and history, f.e. "Midas touch", "Achilles heel", "Crocodile's tears". Some words are not even obvious of their Greek origin like ...kiss! Derives from Old English cyssan which comes form Germanic kussijaną which goes back to ....κύσω (or κύσσω), which means "I will have kissed" so it's a future value of κυνέω which means I kiss! YUP! - not to be confused with κίσσω which means I am pregnant. Do you want me to explain ...water? Does Υδωρ ring any bells?

why do people act like we are a separate race? we are literally just white people with a few eastern traditions.

@leonardfeder5115 we do not. Some of us has slightly darker skin, but most of at this point just look tanned all year round

@@notoffensivenpc8400 facial features still look closer to Lebanese for example than to a German. Greeks and Turks look more alike than Greeks and British. Do you understand?
@leonardfeder511510 ай бұрын
@@notoffensivenpc8400 btw if you stay tanned all year round then that is not a tan because tans fade away when there is less sun.. so it is just being brown. Greeks are not dark like Arabs and Indians but they are still a darker shade than the rest of Europe. Greeks are like the same race as Armenians, Turks, Albanians, Jews and southern Italians.
