Theory on Tanner, Yes the ending is weird BUT! when a serial killer has an obsession their feelings can change especially if they're a sociopath, by the way he spoke to the main character I.E. You, he went from being hired to capture & dispose of you (because that's what Adam wanted right? A digital crime fighting organization can tend to get in the way of business -cough cough-) to speaking fondly of you, digging into your history, finding out what makes YOU tick, respecting YOU the work you've done thus far and becoming infatuated with YOU, hoping by giving something you so desperately want, he can some how become closer to you. By the main character thanking him and speaking kindly to him gives him the satisfaction of giving you something that you have never been able to acquire, giving him the high/ feeling of euphoria of saving you in a sense something id like to call the Hero complex. (To be continued) implies Tanner isn't satisfied with only connecting to you in that way so presumably will try to take you again and keep you as a pet or one of his precious trophies, because every serial killer keeps a trophy living, or dead.

Cory literally was right when he said “Is Tanner playing with his food?” TANNER EATS PEOPLE it’s one of his lines he says when he gets you it’s something like “you’ll taste great” or something among those lines but that’s also why he said “ afraid of being eaten alive?” If the timeline where you beat the game Tanner sees you as worthy and doesn’t harm you “to much” but in a timeline where you get caught he probably sees it as “Oh your not smart enough to evade me” so he just treats you like a regular murder
