these kind of videos, you on prison or phil on jeskai or storm are super educational, sometimes even better than the ones where you guys play the decks where you are more proficient at

Classic to only run 1 trinisphere in the 75 and matchup against storm twice.

What I've learned from playing various red aggro/prison decks is that its usually not correct to play scared especially when your answer is narrow. Id think statistically you would have a much better chance of winning the last game of round 3 if you jammed the rabble as soon as the option was available. If you found a chalice on zero I think then its correct to hold up the counter because you have both of their main options in check

I know I had a joke comment before about your coming nuts, but I did want to say that I really appreciate you posting videos like this. I had a similar run with GW Maverick/Depths where it just felt as if all the decisions and gambles I made did not pay off in my favor and my opponents just drew the stone-cold nuts and I felt really bad about myself. Sometimes as Magic lovers we can become enamored with the results we see on Reddit, Twitter and Discord and try to use those results to draw comparisons about our own play. Of course, it's not beneficial for Magic content creators to post their underperforming leagues but as someone who is in their late 30's with two young children, I don't get the luxury to grind MTGO and a result I can get into some funks where it feels like even if I stacked the deck I couldn't win. It's nice to see that sometimes bad luck happens, and our decisions don't pan out. All this to say, thank you for showing that Magic is hard, and Legacy is also really hard. I appreciate the content as usual Brian.

I think that at the end of the day, this deck is a risk taking deck. You can't play scared when you don't have a clock and don't have a prison piece that interacts favorably. You're on a clock against storm, you don't have the full sets of 3 balls, and you don't have any null rods, so you're put on a timer of them finding enough material to play around your blood moon. Sometimes, you need to go shields down to try and end the game, because you simply don't have the time to wait against storm or other fast decks that your lock pieces don't interact favorably with.
@jonathankelley60357 ай бұрын
I agree with your assessment and I think you hit the head on why magic is such an awesome game. So much complexity in just one deck. This is often why deck specialists can really shine in certain meta games because they know these situations like the back of their hand.

48:37 this is a classic example on the big difference between mono red and control, you need to be willing to elbow tap and not play with the tempo mindset

2 hearse main has been amazing in my ancient tomb decks! Happy to see the tech is getting out there
@jaredschroeder75557 ай бұрын
Hard agree. Maybe not 4 like in this deck, but a few hearse in the main feels good because it's low isn't that bad. It's worst is usually a faerie macabre that can then be used as a disposable attacker, which avoids direct damage until crewed. It can be so much more too tho. It can be the stalemate breaker as it climbs in power, it can be the pseudo haste to push a harder aggro, it can be the stone cold nuts against a reanimate style deck, all with a no pip cost. I'd say I'm quite high on the card at the moment. It really feels decent in tempo, prison, and probably control too. Even in aggro you could do worse, though it's probably a better sideboard than main.

I play red prison from time to time (no other city deck) and honestly it's very hard to know when to send it and when to be wary. When I asked veterans of the deck, they operate mostly on feeling because it's hard to explain how do you know you gotta slam or hold a pyro. In Round 3 I think you made a perfectly fine choice, although I would keep the mountain because I value steady mana a lot. Then again, I sometimes lose exactly because your protected line turn 1 would have been better. My gut tells me you should tap 1 turn 1 and hope for the best, the same as you do with reanimator or other combo (you taught me that!) where you don't try to beat their nuts, just a normal game. I think not having thoughtseize or counters made you a bit too scared (I know it happens to me at least). Lovely league as always.

Thoughts on the Hearse decision from a stompy player: I think the hearse is my choice against scalding tarn every time. Chances are it’s a tempo deck and hearse lines up incredibly well against all of them especially in game one right now. The power to hold off DRC and Murktide even if they are not Scamming is stronger than the moon. I haven’t seen many control lists running tarn so I’d always assume tempo. Hearse feels so good as a beater too. Just great to have in play forever. Not an expert.

As much as bowmasters kinda irks me as a viewer since it feels annoyingly centralizing, it definitely seems that the metagame its a part of is quite healthy. Did not think id be seeing D+T without some more innovations or something

trinisphere is too good in red prison to only include one copy. also i think magus of the moon is worth the risk of being removed easier simply because it increases the clock. however, that is more matchup dependent.

Nobody can convince me 4 Hearse is better 3Ball in a format with an average CMC of 1.6. Hearse on t1 (which seems to be the point of 4) is a HORRIBLE play unless you are certain it matters vs 3Ball on t1 is always good and would have been way better than Hearse this entire league
