When I was making my way through the wonderful world of IT support, I had to deal with toxic coworkers who loved nothing more than to give condescending non-answers and be reading people for asking questions. This to say, I stopped asking questions but still pressed on. Over 20 years later, those kinds of people still exist out there but the response should be the same. Ignore them, press on and learn as much as you can.

I've dealt with this throughout my career. The best reaction, is to note the behavior, and move on. The people who "share information" become a sort of virtual team and the ones who don't? Everyone knows, and sees. Everything I've ever learned I gave away for free. For every mentor that gave me assistance I mentored two others.

Here's an interesting phenomen as well. I liken it to "stage fright". For some performers, it's always present, throughout their careers. I've learned no less than 20 technologies over the course of 25 years in the business. You'd think as you shift focus, and pick up a new skill, this imposter syndrome would disappear yet it lurks. It's bs, the ego, whispering to you in the darkness. Ignore it, it never brings anything good to the table. When you spend a lifetime learning and work in this business you'll be learning for a lifetime. Frankly, that's my favorite part of it and most daunting part at the same time.

Even a few years in after graduating and having a job in software engineering I feel this way sometimes with my inner self. You're 100% with your points. I've been fortunate being on teams and having coworkers who are want to help one another and treat each other with respect. There is no competition, and I 100% agree that the worst thing you can do is choose to hinder yourself and your team by stagnating yourself due to fear, even the smallest improvement is still improvement; what you'll be tomorrow is better than you were to today, and the potential you can be in a year continuing consistently may create someone who will be on the other side helping a coworker improve. Thank you for the talk, these videos are nice to have in the background after work sometimes to destress or quell bad thoughts that have no actual weight.

Great video Coder Coder! If I could add a tip as someone who has been in the industry a long time. When you feel you have exhausted all your google options and you need to talk to a senior developer 1) let them know all you researched, but keep it short, so they know you made a good faith effort to figure it out on your own. And 2) which is most important, show that you look at them as a person of authority and experience and that you hope to learn from them. Ok. don't say it like that but make sure to give compliments. Not fake ones but sincere ones. If you notice a developer that is great documentation or commenting their code let them know. Or if someones code is so clean you can eat off of it let them know. For the most part I think team members are helpful and if you come without ego and you are willing to learn that is what is most important in your career and also life.

I agree wholeheartedly with these tips. I work at a company that has brilliant engineers, client service representatives, and overall staff members. We're all team members, and we aren't competing against each other. I've been a software engineer after graduating for over two years now, I still feel like the dumbest person in the room with my inner demons I always battle; but I know I'm not the only one, I know my teammates want to help me as I would them, and I know that everything new is a challenge I'll struggle and dread but will become stronger for and be able to help my team because of it.

Fantastic video. Self sabotage is a huge blindspot for engineers because.. we're logical! why would we ever sabotage ourselves? One thing I would respectfully add: Be aware of the knowledge domain and skill levels of others you work with. Just because you spent 200 hours in an area doesn't mean others have. Distill information to the appropriate level, and do not be short tempered with others around you that don' have the same knowledge.

Wow, another video that is right on the money for me and exactly what I have been needing. I am a junior WordPress developer and just completed my first year at a small agency. A year ago they fired the lead dev two months into me being their. I wasn't experienced enough to take over all the custom builds so they contracted out, asked me to help with the interview process and I cut my teeth on maintenance tasks and smaller ACF template builds and feature mods. When they hired a new senior dev, He was the best choice but seemed offended to be interviewed by me, not a position I wanted to be in and we just didn't see to gel at all. Things have gotten better, I received two raised during my first year and the senior dev and I have finally started meeting regularly for mentoring once a week and I finally got a chance to take lead on a build. I wasn't fast enough to get it done on my own and that was a blow to my ego but we are working as a team and I am thinking about getting some private one-one coaching sessions on my own as well. My self-taught journey has been long and arduous and I don't feel I get things as quickly as others do but I love what I do so I always look to improve in anyway I can and keep at it. I have a life and happiness I never had before and I want to keep going. Appreciate all of your content. Thank you.

OMG, EVERYTHING YOU SAID ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME!!! I was my inner demon all this time! Your video for this topic is so accurate you described 90% of my entire struggle! There are 2 more sabotage signs that I say must be added to this topic: 1. When you said 'a little more hours' - the inner demon will say ' a couple of days' without specifying how many days bcs for you, it may never be finished. Lack of confidence in your capability to understand a task before you even start researching it is a sign that I have been struggling with and it made me hesitate in coding anything until another developer joined me. I felt that I couldn't even write the '' tags properly when starting a project! So yes, one scenario is 'EXTREME Lack of Confidence and Hesitation' - both together bcs they go hand-in-hand. 2. You mentioned about 'not asking for help at all'. There are two sides to this same coin. Asking for too much help. and this was caused by the previous step I described. You DO indeed become more annoying and the answers that they provided were the ones you were in fact going to do yourself! My senior was like 'if you already knew the answer, then why call me?' - I ended up pissing off my senior who was also a good buddy and he didn't want to answer my Team calls. 😢 So yes, these are the last 2 sabotaging scenarios based o my own experience. Hope this helps contribute to the already amazing content you provided! :)
