Hi Alison! You are my Violin Teacher by choice! I have had my violin for about 5 days now, and I’ve been following your tutorials about holding the bow, how to bow, how to hold the violin, and bowing the open strings. I make sure I hold the bow the way you show us, but sometimes, as I’m bowing, I catch myself moving my fingers some… then I just stop and go back to the basics of holding the bow. I want to get to a point where my fingers don’t move when holding the bow… it will take practice… thank you so much for your expertise and excellent teaching! I have been a teacher all my life, and I know a great teacher when I see one. You are one of the best!

That was a great video. Learned a lot. I do have two questions though that maybe you can help me with. 1) At what point or time should a student remove finger tapes, if they are using them? And 2) When should a student stop playing in the middle of the bow only, and start using bow division? Ive been playing for six months and just up against these situations
@TheOnlineViolinTutor Жыл бұрын
1. tapes should be removed as soon as is possible but not too soon that you rely on them. When you start to feel you are ignoring them, remove them. 2. you would have been doing this right from the start. I teach my students to use all the bow so it isnt an issue when moving on - so i guess you should start to do this asap ideally.

First of all I want to thank you for putting out all these vidoes. I still remember that about 3 years ago when I was planning on buying a violin I looked at your vidoes and once I got it I continued to watch your videos to teach myself which I must say were very helpful. For a while I was teaching myself but eventually I found a violin teacher. I'd say that for the first year of learning was when I tried the most but around my sophomore year in high school I started slipping up and I wouldn't practice at much. It was only not practicing but my grades weren't the best and I wasnt interested in a lot of things I used to like. Anyways now I'm a senior in high school and I guess you could say that Ive been playing the violin for 2 years and some months but for about a year I wasn't trying my best. Right now I haven't practiced for almost 2 months and it's because I've been busy with school but today I tried playing and I feel like I have not accomplished much that I wasted so much time because I don't even know how to do simple things and now I don't even know if I should start playing again. I don't really know what to do so I wanted some advice
@TheOnlineViolinTutor6 жыл бұрын
I would just go back to what you were doing and start there. As for time and effort, only you can decide that and sort that. If you have lots going on and can’t practise, then there isn’t much point as you can’t learn by playing for a few days then nothing for a month. Start again when you feel ready to commit

What i would find quite helpful would be if you had an app of some sort where the sound of each fret of the violin is displayed correctly. It could be a simple video too. I am saying this because i always find myself practicing where the frets are before practicing the pieces themselves. Some people would say to place stickers but i believe that once you take them out the ear would still need to understand if the notes are played correct and also you don't have stickers for 2nd and 3rd position(i mean playing all the notes of first position higher in the violin). I always find myself wanting to practice all the first position notes before i play the pieces in your book so i go to another video just to hear and play the basic notes and get that ''feeling''' of how the note sounds right on my fingers. Cause you know that each violin is slightly different and each human's fingers are unique so the player himself would have to ''well tune himself on the violin :P''. I am saying all this because if you build an app that would include the correct sound of all the frets notes ,the # (etc. etc.) of all positions, we online and with tutor players would have a solid point of reference to train and build strong habits each one with his own way.

Bought an inexpensive Mendini from Amazon and started last Spring...kind of put it down after a couple of weeks, but picked it up again about 3 Weeks ago and am now on Lesson 8. there's something wrong in her methodology. no way a good student can play Fiocco's Allegro in one year. a prodigy, maybe? but an adult learner may take 3-4 years at least for this. 1 year just on book 1 from suzuki if he choose that route. Rieding op.35 in 6-9 months? only if playing like a drunken cat meowning in the ceiling at night! also Kreutzer etudes at 2 years of lessons? n.e.v.e.r.! you are wasting all the potential of the book, and the trill/double stops exercises definitely aren't easy, it's almost as hard as a Mozart Concerto!

I think one more thing that is important for us who self taught is that, try to search a song that can keep you interest to play Violin. Sure you will butchered the song, but better than you lost interest playing violin. Unlike having teachers that prepare things you need to do, you had to search yourself and it can be tedious. So get a song you like, try to search easy version. Idk Like "he is a pirate" or " Hallelluyah" or anime opening.

The supplementary electric is the one you would use for recording in home studio right? I have both, and have put a cheap, stick on piezo pickup on the acoustic, and it's fun to add effects like vibrato and reverb with, but not good enough to record with I don't think. The electric is less scratch with better effect result I've found.

I've been subscribed for a bit planning on picking up the violin for a while and may finally have the chance to really soon. My one problem is that I still haven't decided between violin or viola. Which do you think would be better to start with? How transferable are the skills from one to the other? I've heard that many do violin at a young age mostly due to the size, but size shouldn't be an issue at this point. I also would love to perform in groups or orchestras at some point however I also would love to learn some solo pieces for my own pleasure. The problem with that is that it's easier to do violin in an orchestra and the like (or so I've heard) but I prefer the sound of the viola for many solo pieces.

I would forget about everything and just learn what you want to learn or you will always resent it. It doesn’t matter where you want to play as in an orchestra for example as that may never happen for example, so play what you want to play and just be happy. Sounds like you are leaning towards the viola...

Is a fiddle made differently than a violin? I heard that the bridge on a fiddle is much flatter than one on a violin? I want to make sure that when I get a violin it’s not built like a fiddle. I started out taking fiddle lessons but I changed my mind to learning violin because I love violin music better than I do fiddle. My other teacher taught me to hold the bow with my thumb on the bottom of the frog. He said I could hold it differently later on when I was ready,(i guess that’s because I am left handed). I didn’t even know how to hold it appropriately until I started watching you tube videos. I have just started watching your videos and I’m excited to get on the right track this time. I really don’t think I was being taught properly, I know every teacher has their differences though.

Fiddle and violin are the same instrument. As far as I’m aware. People flattening the bridge might be because they want to hit other strings on purpose(?) I’m not convinced on that though... As for holding the bow and your thumb under the frog, that couldn’t be any more wrong - even for a beginner? I have heard of that before, but still for a beginner it’s wrong on so many levels and only hinders your learning. There is no reason for a student not to start off by holding the bow correctly. I would advise you go through my video lessons and sort of start again - if you will. Forget what you have learned previously and start again.

Hi Allison, I've been watching some of your 'how to videos' for a while now and I just started learning how to play the violin with weekly lessons. Is there any advice for what I should be doing or looking out for. I'd like to play the violin well as soon as possible, thank you so much.

Hi Alison, do you have some recommendation or opinion how long the Stentor II violin could be used in general? I started to think about that 3-6 month period you talked in the video. I started the violin with the Stentor II and having played it about 9 months now, it keeps making a scratching noise all the time (I've been assuming that it is only my bad bowing technique), but could it be time to upgrade, as changing the strings to Dominants and upgrading the bow (carbon fiber) haven't been helping and I have been trying to focus on the right bowing technique..? Mostly I'm self-taught: I've been watching your videos (I'm very grateful for them) and on the side been practicing with Suzuki books.. at the end of book 2 now (however played some 3rd book pieces occasionally).
@TheOnlineViolinTutor6 жыл бұрын
Yes - it probably is time tp upgrade. These cheap student violins really do only last so long before you literally outgrow them. Because they are poorly set up where the string action (distance of strings from fingerboard), peg box and bridge has not been properly thought out, these are all the main factors that can make or break your playing from here on in. You want to look for something properly set up and properly made by an actual person as opposed to a 'branded' one that has rolled off the factory line.

Hi I love your videos I have been playing for a little over a month now I wanted to ask you a question in this video you said that if you’re playing 3 to 6 months and you still sounds scratchy and you’re not progressing it could be a time to maybe invest in a new violin. I was wondering why you wouldn’t suggest that we try getting better strings first or a better bow? Do you think maybe we should try that first? I’m just asking I have a lot of faith in you and I will do whatever you suggest because in my eyes you are amazing and you really know what you’re doing. Please let me know if we should just skip the strings and new bow and maybe just get the new violin if things aren’t sounding and progressing the way they should.❤️🎻
@TheOnlineViolinTutor5 жыл бұрын
New strings and/or bow will not bet the issue - it will be the violin. The build, the set up, the wood, the bridge, the sound post, the string action. All these aspects hinder you greatly when starting out and not enough people realise its because they are trying to learn on a super cheap violin. Putting better strings on a poor violin will not suddenly make the scratching disappear - how or why would it?
@lifewithjimmy43895 жыл бұрын
The Online Piano & Violin Tutor I don’t know...... I was just thinking maybe a combination between a bad bow and cheap strings might make a difference. I came upon a violin by pure luck it was handed down to me from a relative and when I took it to the violin store by our house the guy there who actually makes violins said it was a pretty good one not a great one. The lady that he worked with said they sell violins and the prices start at 600 so I imagine what they sell,I it’s quite a well-made one for that price . I’m not afraid to purchase a new one but I just don’t want to get over my head if it’s just something that could be fixed. For all I know it could be me but I’m pretty sure I don’t sound that bad LOL I’ve only been playing for a month and I have been watching your videos and really making sure I’m doing everything right for a beginner and it’s just scratchy and I did notice my bow hairs are very thin. I’m getting a new bow today so I’ll see if that makes a difference but please tell me I know the prices range and varies but what would be a decent amount to spend on a decent violin? Any help would be greatly appreciated😃❤️🎻 my intonation is good I know the notes... etc. 😃
@TheOnlineViolinTutor5 жыл бұрын
Well its probably you by the sounds of it. You have been at it a month which is nothing - and that month may be . you playing 7 hours a day or 7 minutes one day per week - I dont know, but its all relative. I would give it more time as 1 month is not long enough to assess whether you really do have a problem. or its the violin. Sounds like its you at this stage (sorry lol).

Is there a website or video you suggest that can show or list what techniques should be learned at what stages? For example, months 1-3: bow hold, open strings Months 6-8: colle
@TheOnlineViolinTutor5 жыл бұрын
This video? Bow hold and open strings are the basics and as I said in this video, I can only speak for MY videos and my books and this is what I teach and when and also when professionally, I think you should be learning these things. Colle bowing would be learned a good few years into playing as it’s a very advanced technique. If you go to another website, they may tell you differently.
