PSH was supposed to play Eric in Billy Madison and Adam Sandler really wanted him and even convinced the studio he was right for the role. They agreed but then Hoffman bluntly told Sandler he didn’t want to do it after Sandler begged him to so Bradley Whitford ended up playing Eric. PSH later regretted turning down Sandler the first time so when he found out his regular collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson wrote a movie role for him he begged to be a part of it in order to work with Sandler.

I love how these two are basically slight variations of the same person. Kind of a fun theory I wanna throw out there: The small piano that Barry ends up swiping at the beginning of the movie is definitely some kind of metaphor for love and redemption. He learning to play it over the movie in the same way he's learning to connect and open up to Lena. In the final confrontation between Dean and Barry, you can see an instrument collecting dust in the background of Dean's work area. Kind of implying that Dean once had love but didn't practice it and let it get away from him. Which takes us back to the idea of Barry and Dean being two slightly different versions of the same person. Idk obviously it's a reach but whatever, thanks for reading!

That’s similar to my journey watching a lot of his films after his untimely death and seeing how incredibly talented he was, such a huge loss and we’ll never know the other great performances he could have delivered if he hadn’t died. What’s sort of surreal in a way that adds to how tragic his death was is that he died in 2014 along with Robin Williams later in the year who was also just as incredibly talented.
