I'm 20 n feeling so useless, delayed, depressed n sometimes suicidal because I have nothing but a matric certificate. I dream of becoming a ca(sa) n one of my reasons why is because not everyone does that, I wanna stand out n be different. It is also very high in demand. It seems I'll take longer coz I don't have pure maths. I have so much fears in starting this journey due to my age n whether I'll be able to pass n so on. But this video made me realize that it's better to be 24/25 with a degree than to be that age n still have nothing but fears. Only God determines your timeline, not society. It's a long journey but I know in the end it will pay off well. Thank you so much for this video❤️. Btw besides taking a bridging course can I register at the department of education to add subjects to my matric certificate n apply with that?

Hi Cwengile Glad for the topic This is one of those very divisive topics, some society age is a liability others it is an asset. Anyway do you have any real life examples of people who have done this first hand? l remember hearing one guy say after 40 firms do not take, anyone taken is a relative of the Managing Partner - SM firms not the big ones. So hopefully you can shed some light on this very interesting topic. If l am not mistaken the UK has actually raised its retirement age to 70 because people were living longer so if you change careers at 40 or so you have about 20 good years left...

Hey Bobo I honestly think it depends on the firm and the firms policies. However I have not heard about that nor have I experienced it. Thank you so much for the information, it gave me something to think about 😊.

@@Cwengile I think there was a story in the media earlier this year where one individual managed to pass a degree, forgive me l forget which field it was in. Anyway there were lots of comments and one person said well now he/she can try for a SAICA contract. To which one person said he would not get that due to age. Besides the factual aspects of the story, the point l was trying to make was it seems after a certain age, the profession at large closes doors on those who are of a more 'mature' nature. l wonder why personally, is it because they cannot do the job, which l doubt, is it they may ask for more money, given their stage in life, or is it because they may not be able or willing to travel as much as their younger colleagues who are not encumbered with spouses and offspring to consider? Whatever it is it is very unfortunate, l have had the occasion to work with some foreign people mostly from Australia and New Zealand what l found interesting was there, you could leave school early do what you like and go to school later or change your career later. l think they are more realistic about life because who knows what they will enjoy and at 18 your choices are influenced by what others tell you - teachers, family or friends and not yourself. So at a later and more mature age, l think you are bound to make a more considered decision. l think this sort of thinking reinforces the view that Audit and Articles in particular is something to be endured not to be enjoyed. Just go in get your sign off and then you can leave... So that is why most people do not see it as a career but rather as a necessary step to other more 'interesting' roles. You would think that given the high attrition levels that auditors would do more to attract people rather than putting artificial barriers. So as firms grapple with this whole shift to work life balance, working from home and the loss of staff to new competitors like Makosi and SAPRO, it would seem obvious that they should be attracting anyone with the skills and motivation to do the job but alas. So it seems that this results in those who are already in the profession being worked even harder due to high turnover due to the nature of audit and the increasing number of CAs SA and Z who are now moving overseas particularly to the UK. One thing l seem to have picked up from some of those who have left is that the pace of work in SA was more brutal than overseas, the managers were less understanding and generally were more skeptical of the reasons staff could not make it to work. One youtuber even said in SA -you could not be sick on a Friday or Monday, or two days in a row or a day before or after a holiday. Clearly these sort of mindsets are not helpful in retaining staff or increasing loyalty. Anyway sorry to have rambled quite a bit, its just its one of those topics noone seems to have tackled. It is like everyone or most are aware of it but it is ignored. One person l asked said you need to be aware about corporate politics and such. So they did not dispute but they said there are lots of isms at work, ageism, racism and other regrettable things. Anyway have a great week and thanks for taking the time to reply.

@bobo jo: I really appreciate that extra long comment that you left. I have a lot of concerns about the things you've articulated. As I myself am attempting to get into the career in my late 20s (I'm currently 25), and I've barely scratched the surface. I'm only now going to start my accounting degree next year (2023) and this is because of life circumstances. I keep going back and forth wondering whether the goal is even feasible, given those aspects that exist in the corporate world, especially when it comes to Ageism.

@@gin.k Hi... Thank you for the message. l am surprised and glad to hear what you said. l did not know that someone would find it useful. All l can say is you are still very young. only 20odd, do not be unbowed, go for it. As long as you complete your studies and gain relevant experience you will do fine. Remember getting the qualification is just part of it, proving your worth amongst your colleagues will be the most valuable thing you do. As most people say, Qualifications are like keys - they open doors to certain rooms. Some keys like the CA qualification take you to boardrooms and open those doors, however once inside those boardrooms it is up to you how far you go. The qualification does not do that for you, it is really now up to you. So you will get a seat at the top table but who you are at that table will be determined by yourself. SA is in a special place and especially if you are doing accounting, you need to be confident that whatever age you finish you will be fine. l read the SAICA magazine and there were some amazing stories of people, who took a slightly different path to membership. One woman had done a totally different degree, worked, then after that decided to go for it. The beauty of it all was her daughter was also doing the Articles thing and they eventually qualified together, imagine that! Then there is the story of one lady who got married early on and had a family before choosing to study in her 20s. She later qualified. The last story is a bit sad. It is about a gentleman who had done the degree, hons and had problems qualifying. He eventually put it aside and worked and then decided to try again in his 40s. There is a time limit between doing your degree/hons such that at some stage you either have to do the final year or the Hons again. He literally had to do that but he qualified if l am not mistaken but he passed on at 52, if memory serves me well. Anyway so it has been done before and so do not be distressed. It is unusual yes and you may have to convince others why you want to do that. However being a mature student means you are more focused and much more willing to put in the extra effort to achieve your goals. Lastly due to your personal circumstances, l am sure you more than most are aware of what the qualification can do for you. So in my view you will work harder and thus you should be able to achieve it. Some years back the SAICA famously said that there was a shortage of 22 000 accountants. This does not mean CA SA but everyone from a CA although way to an accounting technician. www.saica.co.za/DesktopModules/EngagePublish/printerfriendly.aspx?itemId=1012&PortalId=0&TabId=1185 So it shows you that accounting is in great demand. Do not be discouraged. l think especially with the way that those with the skills are being poached by other countries, that gap still exists so there are opportunities for you if you choose to pursue it. l did not study the CA but what l know is it is no walk in the park. l hear it can get tricky even from 1st year but the worst apparently is Hons/CTA/PGDA That for many people is the most difficult part of the route to studying to be a CA. So when you start your studies do not be put off by this but be mindful of it and take measures to overcome this challenge. Make use of your lecturers, tutors and even fellow students. Being shy is not good, sometimes you have to be willing to say Maam or Boet or My Sister l do not get what is happening can you explain, you will be surprised at just how happy most people will be to come to your assistance. Anyway l have said a lot. l am sorry about what you have gone through most unfortunate and regrettable. However, since you are going to study next year, hopefully this is your ticket out to better things. There are many youtubers who share their stories about how doing the accounting degree changed their lives. Hopefully you can be one of them. One said something like - l used to have to wake up very early like 5 to take the bus to work and l was working in Sandton or such place in a very nice place. Everyone else did not do this, they drove. One day it was raining and they took the bus which on this day, was very full. Somehow there was a hole in the bus and that hole made them wet. When they got to work others could not understand why they were wet. This same person is now a Qualified CA, proud home owner and doing very well. The point is it is not smooth for everyone or that these other people do not struggle. They struggle but above all their attitude when they meet difficulties is one of facing up to challenges not running away. l hope you get something from this. Sorry for the very long email but l felt l had to share with you. Have a good day.

@@gin.k hi Lets look at this... You are 26 next year, all being well you finish the degree at 28. Should you choose to pursue honours you will finish at 29/30. Then the last CA exams take at least 2 years so theoretically, depending on how it goes, you can finish 31 - 32. That is not bad at all. l would not worry especially if you have work experience particularly articles. The danger is to be that age and not have any real experience. l know someone who had done secretarial. Worked for many years and just shy of her 40s, decided to do an accounting professional qualification. That person has transitioned into an accounting role. Yes her employer is in academics and maybe they were more accommodating than most but it shows it can be done. So have a go. l would rather you sleep peacefully at night knowing you tried and it was not for you, rather than you cannot sleep because you wish you had tried.
