Good example. If it wasn't for the internet, the only source of knowledge I would've had would be from school and a random selection of books to choose from. I think it was much better than Vsauce. I find that Vsauce tends to have clickbaity titles. Yes, often very informative content, but clickbaity because one of the ways Michael answers the questions he poses is to rephrase the question such that it can be more easily answered in a conventional way. I don't have any examples off the top of my head, but I used to watch Vsauce until this sort of thing happened a few episodes in a row too many, at which point I deemed it egregious and lost interest in the channel.

The urgency to do things in life and be accomplished as early as possible comes from the fact that our lives are finite, not necessarily from the language we speak and how it relates to time, I'm sure chines feel that same urgency just as much.
@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 4 жыл бұрын
No; the urgency comes from your culture's relationship to time. There is a saying that has appeared on the Internet is various guises, and it's source is truly unknown and it goes something like this: "A society is great when it's old men plant trees they will never sit under." On the surface this form suggests that the focus one takes to the meaningfulness of one's existence is a choice. The meaningfulness of your existence can extend beyond the duration of your life, or you can shift your focus to the legacy you leave behind when you leave this world. One even wiser saying complements this focus: "When you start anything, start with the end in mind." Your goals should dictate the means you use to fulfil them, because they lay the foundation of what follows. Too many people just think of themselves but, lead life with no meaning. If you live with your legacy in mind, you will always do that doesn't which won't harm your legacy. It's all a mater of perspective. Choose wisely.

"The language that you learned to speak first has a profound impact on how you see the world" I can not agree more. As someone who learned 2 completely different languages almost simultaneously as my native language(s) then spent many years in countries that speak only one of said languages, I've always found that I'm always looking at everything from a different perspective, whether it be more analytical or that I just bring something to the table that no one has thought of before. The added words and grammar I feel enhance to a signifigant degree not only how you see each word but also alter what you can do with it.

Great food for thought (ironically while I was eating a late lunch). It reminded me of one of my favorite quotes “If I could wake up in a different place, at a different time, could I wake up as a different person?” (Not really for the same reason as the source of that quote is more about mitigating loneliness). In my belief system, our lives started long before we were born. We participated in the planning of the material world before it was created, and then in its creation. We established relationships, too, among family and friends, which we carry forward into this life. And when we were born we came with things to do to benefit each other and build lives of service, happiness, and satisfaction. As well, we came with the gift of choice to do according to our wills. This set of beliefs has guided me and helped me make sense of my circumstances and those of others. Not saying that they justify all that is bad and unfair. They do not justify the abuse of our agency and the harm it causes. But they help me understand even the bad and unfair, and to be at peace that the bad and unfair will have compensations. You raise very interesting and probing questions. Your mother’s insights and understanding are marvelous. I don’t doubt them in the least. Thank you for sharing. What you shared helps me feel connected to all those around me.

Okay, I'm back for my third ramble from this video. I'm sorry. I really love that you say "had you been born in a different time in a different place, you would not be you." The reason I love this is because human behavior has long fascinated me, and I have been saying over and over again for years that "(behavioral) phenotype is the intersection between genotype and environmental factors." Of course, there's at least a little bit more to it than that; probably a lot more, but I wanted to package it into a nice little sound byte. And "environmental factors" covers everything from location and time to the chemical environment of the uterus you developed in and previous behaviors that an individual has executed. I find that I really don't like who I am, and not in a way that can easily be changed. Like, for example, I don't enjoy being transgender. I hate it. Yet after years of denying it, it hasn't changed. My internal motivations and most profound desires seem immutable. I hypothesize that this trait was likely a result of some sort of environmental condition ( having to do with maternal hormones, perhaps) during my early stages of development. The point that I'm getting at is that we seem to develop early on some very fundamental patterns of interpreting the world. I already gave my example of being transgender, but I more relatable one might be that I also don't respond well to social rejection (what a lucky combo, I know). People tell me to brush it off; I tell myself to brush it off. Yet I'm always shocked at how easily hurt I am despite being a veteran rejectee. It would be interesting to see how much of these aspects of the mind could have been different if the environment were different. The cliché "nature or nurture" debate really doesn't seem to be a reasonable question anymore given what we know about the importance of both. I like the saying "Mencius' mother, three moves" (which refers to a story in which a mother moulds her son's interests by moving house to find a more suitable environment to encourage what she deemed to be favorable traits). It's so humbling to think that the sense of self is just an evolutionary byproduct of a side reaction of a ~3.8 billion-year-old reaction responding to and interpreting its environment. Kind of like organic chemists control the environment of their reactions to effect wildly different outcomes using the same chemicals.

I don't know if it is true but the way I feel is that everything that becomes "mainstream" is not as valuable as it was before it became so popular. I think this channel would lose its spot as a source for "new" or (I dont't know how to say that) interesting ideas. Maybe you get my point. Atleast I hope so (I am not a native english speaker so I don't know how to put my thoughts into english words).

Just came across your videos today. I am a fan now. Very insightful, thought provoking and informative. Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to cause some of us to think outside of our tiny little worlds. We tend to race at top speed down our own little highway not really taking into consideration the larger world inside of us, physically and psychologically. Not many can do that today.

I was, I am, I will be are also used in my native tongue which is Dutch. Ik was, ik ben, ik zal zijn. That is due to both English and Dutch being Germanic languages (fun useless fact unless you study languages) and because they are in the same “family” of languages they share a lot of similarities in basic grammar and use of words. Dutch also shares a lot of words (and by share I mean we stole the words lol) from the French language. For instance, we use the words etui to talk about a pen case. An umbrella is a paraplu, from the French word parapluie. A wallet is a portomonee which is derived from the French word portofeuille. We also call it a portofeuille, but it is considered an “old” word.

Fascinating concept, thank you for sharing. In my family I was born in 1943, my sister in 1953. We might as well have been born in different worlds. Try as much as I can and still there is a divide. Even our parents were different people for each of our childhoods. I have tried to talk with her about this but she can see no other reality than her own. I enjoy your conversations. Thank you for sharing.

That's where you have to define what "you" actually means. My perspective is that "you" are not simply the ideas you believe. Those are perhaps a part of the explanation for your behavior, much like being bullied can cause you to want to bully others, but there is something that is "you" that can't be changed by your environment. There are ways that you will always see things whereas another person would not, such as people who seem to be naturally talented in understanding emotions, or physical awareness, things like that. We can be pushed around and molded into all kinds of things but there is still a big piece of each of us that is unique. I believe Jesus Christ, God Himself, is the only one who can help us fully realize us, and mold us into the shape we were meant to be, the best shape, which is to resemble Him!

i like this comment, the video seems to say everything is pointless, this is not true, there are some, like us, who will always be us, unique, a certain way at the core and others, who are almost drone, robotic, I can feel them, like the kind of people that can only enjoy things through and while with others...they can't create their own hapiness, they're almost completely void of real and true emotions, no sense of self, weird stuff!

@@ldude I think his video is still right. It's only by the grace of God that we are who we are, born in a specific place and time, with our life experiences. Maybe that gets into the debate of predestination/etc, but it's still ultimately only by God's grace we are who are we.

Hi Bernard, I’m currently an recent subscriber, but I found this at probably the time I needed it the most. I have been surrounded by a group of friends that, as you described, constantly ripped on me. I decided to finally leave that group after several years of being “friends” with them. Shortly there after I find my self at an indispensable internship opportunity that I have learned a lot from. I am now surrounding myself by professionals who are more than willing to teach me. After reflecting on this I have found that in the 4-5 months without that group of friends I have changed so much. I have achieved much more than I did years prior. I’m truly thankful for the actual friends I have and for everything I have in my life. The point I’m attempting to make in this dissertation of a comment is that I can relate to your video and it has really opened my mind to the idea of who I should be surrounding myself with. Who is going to be a positive influence in my life and who will be negative. The people you are around have a slow, but steady osmosis effect on you just as you have on them. I hope you have a great day and keep making awesome content! I’ll be watching it.

Yes, it's like an echo chamber. I've been atheist since my teens, having become skeptical of religion after learning about evolution. In my thirties, I also identified as a humanist, once I'd learned that that's what I'd been all along - I didn't have a name for it. Interestingly, I don't bring up atheism in conversation, like theists casually do - "spreading the word," looking for agreement, or to convince non-believers that a supernatural entity/puppet-master in the sky exists (and we should _repent._

Great idea, subscribed already!

how do Chinese people say that they went to the store if they don't have time involved. Have they a word that determines when something happens or how does it work? we all know that there aren't two of the same kind of fingerprints in the whole wide world. I would rather say the fingerprint stuff in your phone is not 100% accurate :D
@TheNinjafroman

Fingerprints are extremely diverse but they are not 100% unique (althought quite close), that's a myth. There's a minuscule chance that they have the same fingerprints, though I agree that the fingerprint recognition on the phone was probably not accurate enough :)
