I always wanted to know How can I create chord progression which has to rely on emphasize character of chosen scale? How it looks chords progression (in the key of C major-cdefgab) with ionian mood and how it looks chords progression with phrygian or dorian mood(in the key of C major-efgabcd/defgabc)? I found only this somewhere in internet "... traditional jazz method is to use two chords. The primary chord contains any note of the mode except the character note. The secondary contrasting chord contains that note. So, for D dorian, you could use Dm7, Dm9, Dm11, D9sus4, etc. as primary chord (none of which contain B). For the other chord, you could use G, G7, G9, Em7, Cmaj7 (all of which contain B). The most common choices are Dm7 and G7, or Dm7 and Em7 ". Cheers :)

The “magic” appears when you discover that any motives created from these scales may be superimposed over a variety of chords with equally good results. MAGIC MOTIVES - Dan Haerle My problem is: -How to build phrases which are question implying the answer? -How to build phrases which are suggestive of asking another question which suggests the next question etc etc before answer ?

@2:00 do you think when you transpose keys it actually affects the feel/mood of a chord progression/song. I had this discussion with my music teacher about it once. I asked did different keys have different moods and he first said yes and gave examples in jazz of different keys that had different tunes, and then I said but mathematically the melodic tonal intervals and chords haven't changed and then he changed his answer to no, it makes no difference, but I think he didn't want to discuss it any longer. But mathematically the frequencies are changing under a transposition and potentially harmonic resonances etc (i don;t know). And some frequencies are said to be significant… and even what frequency root A should be have argued by composers for centuries. Bit OT but you seem to know you music theory inside out. :-)

Amazing question! And, there's actually a very simple answer to this. If someone has perfect pitch, then the specific key (i.e. the actual frequencies) could make a difference to the emotion they feel from a chord progression or melody, but if they don't have perfect pitch (and most people don't), then it's all contextual and about the specific melodic and harmonic intervals. In other words, if you transpose a chord progression from D Dorian to E Dorian, people with perfect pitch could perceive it slightly differently, but most people will hear and feel the identical thing from both versions. @@zyrrre Perfect pitch is the ability to know what note is being played without using a reference note with which to compare it. So if I were to play a random note on a piano, the person with perfect pitch would be able to instantly tell you what it was.

Hey Will, good to see you back again! This is a great question. Any chord in Dorian containing the 6 will emphasize the mode's unique sound, but the IV chord is by far the most powerful of them. This is because our ears expect the IV chord to be minor, but instead it's major. Missing-nin When you write all of your midi in A minor/ C major all the notes in those keys are white. So the trick is writing your music in one of those keys and then shifting the midi up or down. By doing this you will get the same music but in a different key. This is because all the intervals will remain the same.

Secondly, welcome to our Hack Music Theory community, we're super stoked and grateful to have you here! Thirdly, regarding your question. The example in our PDF that you are referring to is in C Dorian, so in C Dorian the IV chord is Fmaj. However, the example in this video is in D Dorian, so in D Dorian the IV is Gmaj - the root note of the mode (i.e. D) is two semitones higher than C, therefore the IV (i.e. Gmaj) will also be two semitones higher than Fmaj. The important thing to remember is that the IV in Dorian is always a major chord, not a minor chord (which is what everyone will be expecting, as I explain in the PDF).
