Tip. Get yourself a squishy ball for the fretting hand and squeeze it throughout the day (concentrating on the fingers) it releases and strengthens your tendons when you’re starting out. I was getting cramping, that helped, and getting into a proper position!

Great video, man. I love the way that you're brave enough to put your voice out there; putting the bad with the good, as it were. Keep on truckin'. How long have you been playing? I'm just at the point where I'm actually thinking of buying a beginner banjo and I am encouraged by your content. Keep pushing it out.

Thank you. Useful info on hand position as I'm struggling to get to the 5th and 7th frets.

This is a great video- I have had many friends use the excuse of their hand size to forestall playing an instrument! It is impressive that you can offer practical solutions, I can play guitar but I am awful at talking about it or breaking down anything I am doing. On any instrument, hand placement (and the angle your arms and hands are at) is an important thing to think about early and often.

ahh thank you! i feel like i could talk days about wrist and arm placement. lol

Keep up the good work, enjoy your videos here in the UK. As a beginner my self, its interesting about hands being too big. Although I know I will improve with practice I was wondering if a wide neck banjo might help as i sometime struggle to hit a string without hitting the next string at the same time.

Generally you can fix that with left hand position. I wouldn’t do a wide neck only because if you ever was to try and sell it most people don’t like the wide neck. But you could try the “Crowe” spacing bridges. Although it wouldn’t help much at the 1st through 5th fret.

Thank I'm on day 7 and I am just frustrated with myself for not being able to play 3rd string fret 2 without chocking off string 2. I'm going to try your suggestion. Thank you.
