When you say multiply by 10^2 or 100 it implies almost as if they were multipliers which is wrong! In the case of unit conversion, for example, convert 5km to meters, which is 5 x 1000 = 5000 meters, 5 is the multiplier and 1000 is the multiplicand. Why? because 1km = 1000 meters, in other words, I have 5 times 1000 meters!. You can also look at this as km being constant 5km is basically 5xkm you just replacing km (which is km =1000 meters).
