Everyone knows how to brace for lovecraftian horror at this point. It leaves the modern audience vulnerable to something like this, alien encounter fiction in the line of Solaris (the book) and 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s not a fear you can brace your way through, because that’s f*cking terrifying in the context of its humanistic genre. It’s a fear you only process by trying to understand and hoping you’ve got it right.

I remember when I was watching Annihilation. This film was something... diffrent... Something is still stuck with me when it comes about this movie. This movie is an incredibly underrated cosmic horror film.
@dashiellgillingham45794 жыл бұрын
It’s not cosmic horror. If we allow that to mean an aesthetic rather than genre, yes, absolutely, but annihilation is fundamentally humanistic fiction. We can understand this, we just don’t yet, and we’re nowhere near that comprehension, comprehension we needed yesterday. We have value, we can speak to these things, get what we want out of them, but as ignorant as we are, we cannot know if we communicated the right thing, if we were communicating at all, or if we just witnessed some process already underway continue as it had and merely assumed our prodding was meaningful. You can see how that arrives at a similar look to Lovecraftian/ Eldritch/ Cosmic Horror, but is constructed so radically differently that they don’t tap anything close to the same feelings. Annihilation was written for uncertainty, above all, where hopelessness defines cosmic horror. Unless, of course, people are willing to properly divide up the words, leave eldritch horror for the sickly wet and decaying landscape of those who have to ignore the true scale of reality to continue existing within it, and affix cosmic horror to this beloved living crystal tree of alien encounter fiction that runs a root through Solaris and a branch through Annihilation.

@nunyabusiness80003 жыл бұрын
Read the book series, it’s a subtle cosmic horror masterpiece. It’s more than that, it’s an evolution of the formula in a way I haven’t read before, baffling, complex, cerebral and in the end impossible to understand. There’s always an undercurrent of anxiety and existentialism. But the pacing and the framing make it seem like sci-fi or thriller but the best classification I could give it is cosmic horror
@CHR153334 жыл бұрын
The fact that the "source" of the shimmer in the lighthouse has a shape based on the Mandelbulb (a 3D version of the Mandelbrot fractal) makes me think that the mutations inside Area X are not occuring randomly but converging onto the ideal form of that source. That would actually explain why one of the characters quasi-instantly transformed into a plant after she stopped resisting: she gave up on her own mind-body homeostasis in favor of that of the source inside the lighthouse, turning her into an integral part of the shimmer. In this sense Area X is a huge fractal structure-reality in the becoming, processing the living staying within its boundaries to grow and expand its ideal form towards new levels of complexity - some sort of allegory of ourselves. Not only that, I also suspect that the whole narrative becomes more and more fractal as we approach the end of the movie, and that the shimmer does not merely die out then, but transmute into us, the observer, like it did with the main protagonist - for ultimately the shimmer is not a being of flesh or bones, or even minerals, but a pattern on which we had a glimpse inside the belly of the lighthouse. This is not "just" a movie: it is master level hypnosis.

The origins of Area X from the books’s lore: The cataclysm like a rain of comets that had annihilated an entire biosphere remote from Earth. Witnessed how one “made” organism had fragmented and dispersed, each minute part undertaking a long and perilous passage through spaces “between”, black and formless, punctured by sudden light as they came to rest, scattered and lost- emerging only to be buried, inert, in the glass of a lighthouse lens. And how, when brought out of dormancy, the wire tripped, how it had, best as it could, regenerated, begun to perform a vast and preordained function, once comprised by time and context, by the terrible truth that the species that had given Area X it’s purpose was gone. So it’s an alien piece of technology that was sent to earth with the purpose to heal, the only problem is that it was meant to heal its own environment, not earths. This is why the land within Area X is strange. And what’s interesting is that the other fragments of the technology on other planets are in sink, in a way- which is why there’s time mishaps and “other” horizons blending together- it’s the same place on different planets all merging together in a portal that’s phasing in and out of existence constantly.

Colour out of Space was fine. It was an interpretation reflecting family relationships, it seems, so significantly different from the story thematically.
@tuskinradar86884 жыл бұрын
@@ernestineprin1697 thematically certainly, but the premise was striking similar, i walked out of the theater after having watched Annihilation honestly convinced id just seen a loose adaptation of CooS, the same way that John Carpenter's The Thing 1982 is partly drawing on Lovecraft's the Mountains of Madness premise. Annihilation is about a strange meteorite crash landing in a rural area near a small town, and proceeding to corrupt everything around it in cosmic horror-ey and unfathomable ways, complete with bizarre mutations of flora and fauna, and a gradual degradation of anyone who spends long periods in its area of effect, complete with a strange chromatic light source. Thematically the films are concerned with different things, but the basic story of this bizarre otherworldly thing exerting a corrupting, mutagenic, and ultimately destructive influence on everything around it was almost too similar not to think was intentional imo. And no worries, just to be clear I loved CooS, comments would probably be fairly similar regarding its quality, some changes were obviously made in a few areas to tell the story in modern day, but it was told and portrayed about as faithfully as a story about a color we can't see can be visually portrayed on screen, and i totally loved it for that
@UnreasonableOpinions4 жыл бұрын
The main problem with trying to explore a place like this is that ultimately the Area has been created entirely to serve the needs of the film's narrative, and the narrative is first and foremost concerned with exploring ideas of grief and loss. It's an excellent movie, but trying to examine it as a film about An Interesting Alien only leads to disappointment - for all they manage to make the surface level of the film genuinely interesting, wherever a scene or a line had to choose between what's best for the surface plot and what's best for the narrative metaphor, the narrative always wins. I don't mind that many people didn't like the movie, it's certainly not for everyone. But the endless ranks of 'explained' videos about the movie that obsess over details of plot but fail to even mention the narrative were very frustrating.

It's not just you. "X" has a lot of uses. In math and science, the letter "X" is commonly used to designate unknowns and variables. Visually, it has an easy-to-spot center, which makes it handy in marking out map locations as well. Thematically, an 'X' crossing through something like a name or picture is seen as letting the audience know whatever that name or pic represented is done: a name crossed off a list is someone who's been dealt with, and a crossed-out picture usually means a target that has been eliminated. That, and it sounds cool.

Sooo the movie version vs the book version. I liked both movie and the books (books more) but they are very different from each other. Ever consider doing the book version?

I would recommend watching Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979) as it is way better film then annihilation.
