Let's say the square has a side of 12, hence the area is equal to 12x12 = 144 units

@@simranbansal2175 Because we're repeatedly adding the width of the square by the height of the square (or vice versa). Imagine having a set of cards, consisting of, let's say, 10 rows and 12 columns. How many cards are there in total? We could count them individually, but this would get really long really fast. So we repeatedly add the number of cards in each column to the total value, by the number of rows (again: or vice versa). In the first row there are 12 cards. In second row there are also 12 cards, which makes 12 + 12 = 24 cards in total. In the third row there are again 12 cards, which makes 12 + 12 + 12 = 36 cards. We do this ten times (for 10 rows in total), to get 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 120 cards. So we see that multiplication (12 * 10) is just repeated addition (12 + 12 + ... + 12; 10 times). The same principle applies to the square: The width is stacked up for the value of the height - this is the area of a square.

@@romano-britishmedli7407 thank you very much.. was browsing multiple video for this answer. I know it has to do with how multiplication is done by addition but couldn't figure out exactly how to construct it. I'm at peace now. I can continue my calculus videos.
