Situation:
On 12 June, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will conduct the functional
phase of Exercise Ru Whenua. The aim of Exercise Ru Whenua is to improve New Zealand’s
ability to respond to and recover from a significant destructive event (Alpine Fault earthquake).
The exercise scenario is a magnitude 8.2 earthquake occurring on the Alpine Fault.
AREC will conduct a national communications exercise alongside the NEMA exercise to
practice the establishment of radio and data communications across the country and gauge
AREC members readiness to respond should a national significant event occur. The exercise is
not part of Ru Whenua and will not involve the passing of exercise injects or exercise traffic. The
purpose is to evaluate the ability to establish the network. Further exercises in the future will
involve formal message handling.
Mission:
The AREC mission is to establish voice and data communications between AREC members and
designated regional control stations throughout New Zealand
