Can't NOBODY sing this song like Aretha. This song was about her husband at the time. I feel every emotion in her voice.
@angelafisher2993 жыл бұрын
@yourmanwatson You are correct about the songwriter and he wrote a very touching song. According to several books that I have on Miss Franklin, the song was inspired by her toxic marriage. She loved Ted White, but wasn't willing to let him go despite pleas from family and friends. Mr. Shannon and Miss Franklin (and others) created a classic.

The story of how this hit song came about is one of those great seldom untold stories of old. Aretha had been around for a while and put out a string of unsuccessful records. Her style on those records was much different than the queen of soul that she became. But now Aretha was in the famous Muscle Shoals recording studio for the first time and by her side were the swampers. However nothing was happening and there was an uneasy silence in the recording studio as nobody seemed to have a good idea for a song. Then out of nowhere the keyboard player Spooner Oldham started playing that iconic keyboard part, somebody yelled THATS IT ! And within an hour or 2 they recorded the song, Aretha had a new soulful style and she was on her way to being a huge star. Now at almost the same time Spooner was also playing with Neil Young and once again he helped shape a whole different style and generation of music. What a guy!!

I remember the first time I heard this. Jukebox at a bar with a view of Narragansett Bay. Early summer of 1967. Hadn't heard of "Aretha." Interesting name, I thought. Curious, I played this song. Listened to what was far above and beyond expectation. Sensitive, deeply personal, sung from the heart without the vocal gymnastics employed by so many since. Consummate soul.
