There are many different patterns, styles, and sizes of cloth diapers, but you can use this general assembly style to sew up the vast majority of them.
This video will show you how to sew your own cloth diapers from start to finish!
Blog tutorial post with very detailed step-by-step photos and directions: prefold2fitted....
Print up some free pattern templates to practice with from my diaper-sewing blog! prefold2fitted....
(The diaper in this video was using the “NB/S Fitted” fitted diaper template.)
Stay tuned for several more cloth diaper (and related) sewing videos all this month!

Thank you for this great video and pattern . I’m making NB size diapers for my granddaughter’s reborn doll. This video is so helpful, and I appreciate your sharing the pattern for free. I can’t wait to make these for her. 😊 All the best!

I've been reading your diaper sewing blog for a few years now and have made several covers for friends. I had some trouble in the beginning with getting a clean finished look on the front and back flaps near the elastic casing area. I would love to see a video showing the construction method for your OS Snap-In cover sysyem with all the optional variants, and the mock Grobaby AI2 shell template that you have. I was recently gifted a Grovia diapering system that I want to give to a friend but the snap in inserts are pretty frayed and well loved, so a pattern template for the snap in inserts would be awesome. The inserts almost resemble fitteds with built in gussets and two main layers that are connected at the top and bottom. I'd really like to make her some more of these inserts since her daughter floods her diapers and out pees almost everything. She's been having trouble finding diapers that fit because even at 6 weeks old she is very tall and slim and has already outgrown the rise of her newborn covers. Sorry for the long comment 😁

Grovia uses proprietary snaps. So, that is actually quite difficult. However, you CAN always add in an extra set of regular size 20 snaps into the covers and then make your own inserts that way for them. As for my OS snap-in cover system... THAT is actually my plan for every Wednesday live stream this month. I will be doing one element from it each Wednesday. I can probably do separate more refined videos later on (not this month though) for it, but it was my plan for what to sew on Wednesdays if nobody comes on with any special requests. :) Grovia diapers aren't great for heavy wetters anyway though honestly. My daughter fit into them great, and used them well for a while, but then wasn't able to once she got bigger. They did make for great feel-wet potty-learning diapers though, so I'm glad I kept a few around. If your friend's daughter is a heavy wetter, I'd really recommend she try a few prefitteds with doublers. Prefitted with an added 3-4 layer lay-in or a smaller trifolded prefold as an insert work GREAT for heavy wetters. Either under a normal PUL cover or under fleece or wook soakers/covers. They're quite trim too because the wrap-around fully absorbent diaper really helps.

@@arfymakes3611 That's awesome! I really want to make her some more covers (OS) but wanted it to be something multi functional like your cover sysyem offers😍 She's been using covers and prefolds for the most part, but she wants a few options that are dad friendly as well. Thank you for your reply ❤️

If you make a snap less fitted, do you still need the back elastic?
@jenniferhartjen1603

Made it! Not very pretty but I think it will be functional. Used 100 cotten quit block for the outer and a piece of t-shirt for the inner. Now to make the soaker!

And made another with just flannel and a washcloth sewed into in between the two pieces. When I did it that way my hand barely fits into the "pocket" to get to the top elastic. But we will see how it works!

Wow you have made many tutorials and videos on all of your wonderful patterns. The only thing I seemed to have missed is whether there Are Seam Allowances? Could you please confirm how wide they are and if they are already included. Thank you for your kindness. Lynda

Do you make any of these for 5year old an upwards. This style would be ideal for a little in know needing to hold her incontinence pads and I can make her pretty ones?

I have a few patterns that would fit up to about 55lbs depending on their build, but I am super happy to help design something more custom if you want to join my discord and hit me up.

Have you ever sewed the elastic in before turning the diaper right-side out and sewing the channels around the elastic rather than sewing the channels first?
@arfymakes3611
@arfymakes3611 3 жыл бұрын
I either do that or zig-zag it in for things like doll or preemie diapers sometimes. But, It is just easier for me to get a cleaner result my way. If you sew it in and then turn and case with your top-stitching, there is the chance of catching your elastic in your sewing, and also having to sew while stretching can lead to more things like bent needles and/or skipped stitches.

I really like the double PUL diaper covers like like best bottoms. I prefer making turned diapers though and they use FOE. Would this be a good method for PUL fabric only?
@arfymakes3611
@arfymakes3611 3 жыл бұрын
I mean... you COULD, but I think you should look at something like my Flip-style cover instead (if you don't like FOE.) You'd have to use a turned cover pattern for something like that though, because covers are wider throughout than both fitteds AND PUL diapers.

Any advice for someone who is attempting this for the first time? What kind of fabrics would be good to practice on? Also any tips for applying the snaps, and figuring out how much elastic to use?
@arfymakes3611
@arfymakes3611 3 жыл бұрын
I think practice diapers with flannel are always a safe bet. Also, make them without any closures at first and just buy a couple diaper pins. A flannel cloth diaper can still be used as a fitted if you add a trifolded prefold or a folded up washcloth or hand towel (depending on the size of the baby.) As for how to use snaps and snap pliers, I think kamsnaps.com has tutorials on their site. :) You want the elastics to easily stretch out fully and not be hindered when you sew them down.
@lorelyruiz978

@@arfymakes3611 thank you so much for your response! Are pins better to use than snappi's? And just to clarify, a cover will still need to be used with fitteds, correct?
@arfymakes3611
@arfymakes3611 3 жыл бұрын
@@lorelyruiz978 Flannel isn't snappiable. Only a few fabrics are. Prefold material, sherpa, some fleeces, some ribbed or waffle knits, and terry (if you want it to get very snagged.) And yes, fitteds need to be worn with a cover. Whether that is a fleece cover or a PUL cover is up to you and how you want to use them. Have you checked out my diaper sewing blog?
