This whole Argentinians being racist thing sounds blown out of proportion to me and its sad because i think its getting a bad rep over something thats maybe not there. They might be surprised seeing black people, yes, of course, cause its not that common, and be curious about you, but thats it. For example i saw one black youtuber go there and at one point got shouted "nigga" by some teens on the street, and he took offense. But the thing is, they only shouted that cause that's the word we get from the movies and songs we get from the US. We don't know enough to know it may be offensive, we just repeat what we hear from US pop culture. They were trying to imitate hip hop, basically, to get some communication going.

90% of what we, Argentinians, “know” about afro people, is based on pop culture and international media. People like Zendaya, the Obamas or Bob Marley are what makes up our understanding of afro descendants. There’s a strong correlation between afro people and art, rap and hip hop, ‘funny’ hair (as in odd and different, not as in amusing), there’s also sexual prejudice and stereotypes (99% of Argentinians probably believe afro men have huge members). Argentina doesn’t have a history of segregation and violent racism. There definitely IS racism in Argentina, but it is less implicit, it’s ingrained in certain phrases or vocabulary, in stereotypes and prejudice. The fact that there isn’t a large community of afro Argentinians, makes it harder to fix the issues we have as a society with racism. When you say something racist (without intending to be racist and hurt others) no one gets offended or points out your mistake, and when someone does call you out for being racist, most people just dismiss it as an overreaction or a lack of understanding of the local culture (after all, they weren’t trying to offend anyone or say something hurtful, in people’s minds those things simply aren’t racist, and they would be super friendly with an actual black person). So yes, there is racism, there are racist behaviors and attitudes which are commonplace. But at the same time, literally nobody would mind having a black neighbor, and no parents would care about their child dating a black person. Racism in Argentina is kinda like people who are homophobic but aren’t hostile towards gay people. They say out of place things and have internalized homophobia in the form of prejudice and stereotypes, but they’d never purposefully insult or hurt a gay person, even though they might say something insensitive without intending to.

@@patriciapa7379 In Argentina you live in a bubble. As one of your countrywomen said, there are so few Black people living in Argentina, that it’s hard to really gauge what is offensive from what isn’t, because an Afro-Argentinian might be too intimidated to say anything even if they are offended. So sorry, but you don’t get to decide what might be offensive to a Black person since you’re not Black and have never lived a day in a Black person’s shoes. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago, I’ve been living in the United States since I was a teenager, over 35 years now. Growing up in Trinidad we called everybody “bitch,” man or woman. “You are one silly bitch, hahaha.” One day, soon after moving to the US I was joking with a new female friend of mine (who ironically enough was also from Trinidad originally), and I made the mistake of referring to her as a “bitch,” although jokingly. Joking or not she set me straight, and I learned my lesson. It didn’t matter that I didn’t intend to offend her. I didn’t get angry, I didn’t get defensive, I didn’t say “but that is how we all talk to each other back in…” So no, I am not God, but I don’t have to be God in order to accept that when someone says to me “what you said to me is offensive,” that maybe I was wrong and should apologize and move on. Second: It doesn’t matter what the players intended when they sang their offensive song. The song could be interpreted different ways to different players, but to Afro-French players it reminded them of anti-immigrant sentiment from the far right in France. Criticism that said essentially that it doesn’t matter if they represent France, they will never be French. If part of your country’s soccer culture is to sing songs that might be offensive, then you don’t get to complain when someone tells you it’s offensive. Third: You can do whatever you do in your house, you are entitled to your privacy. However, if you foolishly film what you do and post it on social media for all the world to see, then you don’t get to complain about any criticism that you receive. Social media will be the death of this generation. Fourth: it wasn’t the fact that they ‘just’ turned off the camera, it’s the way that they nervously demanded that they stop filming. Disagreement is your right, I’m not here to argue your opinion with you. Fifth: you either don’t understand, or don’t want to understand the way that the Afro-French (and Arab-descended) players have been criticized in France. It has nothing to do with “nationalities” and everything to do with the fact that some in the far right refuse to recognize them as French because they’re not your typical Euro-descended French person. It’s exactly about race.

I was there for 2 months and did not want to return to the US. I was in Palermo in the most amazing apartment with everything for $700 a month including utilities. Mentally, I felt at peace. When they had breaking news on their tv and my chest would tighten (think school shooting etc). It would be something like a car accident on the highway. Traveling abroad allows you to acquire transcultural awareness (competence). Racism is everywhere, but culturally and geographically manifested/situated. Race is a social construct, and race and racial identity are more fluid and undefined for most Latinoamericans, making it a less noticeable trait for them. A different history w/o Jim Crow made a difference in racialization and also mixing, there is no 1 drop rule bs like in the US, etc. I think the guy commenting on your race may have warned you. If you experience racism there it is likely to come from unconscious biases, systemic structural remnants or from European older immigrants, not all. The word "negro" can have positive connotations, unimaginable for the Euro imperial-colonial thought on race where black describes negatives, hence a lot of players get in trouble in EU. The chant reflects a lack of awareness of what Afrodescendants face in European societies, but it also points out how migration is ok only to advance their football objectives, while they have policies that continue to choke economic success in many African countries ((France), systemic racism and de facto segregation, they cannot point the finger. I remember the migrant camps in Normandia and a fire, it was not humane at all. No absolutes exist. Cheers from DC !

You may have already mentioned it, but the thing next to the toilet is a Bidet, a French invention that is used to wash after doing Noº 2, in France it is not so popular currently but in Argentina it is practically vital in every bathroom. The idea would be to go to the bathroom, clean with toilet paper and then go to the bidet to cleanse yourself, usually using soap as well, which is why many bidets have a soap dish and towel rack next to them. For space reasons, if a bidet does not fit in the bathroom, a Bidematic is implemented, which is a bidet installed in the toilet (similar to those used in Japan, only without the Japanese technology). In short, the culture of butt hygiene is very deep-rooted in the country. Imagine having to go to a public bathroom where there are no bidets. Our general concern is getting home to be able to use the bidet because we feel dirty 🤣🤣

There is racism in Argentina as there is elsewhere, I think some cultures, like America, tend to think racism only in terms of blacks or afro descendants, but as Argentina has very little black population, racism is mostly directed towards mixed race people, often with one or both of Indigenous and afro ancestry, and all the spectrum of race mixing with whites. Racists even use the word "negro" to identify these people even when they are not even close to be afro, but the racism is still there. We also use "negro" as a kind nickname, and it applies to everyone, independently of your racial background. In general, I would say that "race" is not so important in Argentine culture as it is in America or other countries were black and white population remained separated until very recently, in the XX century.

The meaning of the words si not the same when you translate it, for us is weird and bad to say old to an ancient person and in America use that word like a cool nickname

When I started living in Argentina 1984 I found that people would say the word negro.. I didn't understand because the people they were referring to were not black but what they were referring to was the color of their hair.. anybody that is mixed has black hair.. people who are not white ,that is the way that they refer to them,, a lot of police officers and military are negros😮😂

RACISM DOESN'T EXIST IN ARGENTINA. (we are mixed races, so if you are very blond the people is going to see you and the same if you are original black...but just only because is not common, but not because of racism) Black race from África, emigrated to Brazil an other countries, but not to Argentina, here were native people not black. It's a lie that storie about spanish here killed all black people, is not the truth. In 1514 we were a Spain colony...and Fernando the Chatolic King...signed called an Cédula, where he stated that every spaniar who marrie with a native woman, woukd have their land...then, it what happen, they mixed, they got married, they earned their land to cultivate, and they had children, generating another mixed race: "mestizo". In 1813 goverments signet a Document about "Freedon since the pregnat" ...so we didn't have slaves here. EVERYBODY IS WELCOME TO ARGENTINA ❤🇦🇷❤

The title of this video speaks of racism in Argentina BUT the discussion did not begin until 6:51 of a 17 minute video and it was centered around one comment from a man in a bar. Then you start talking about meat, hotel rooms, and electric sockets. How is any of this speaking about racism in Argentina????
@KeenanLambert1987 ай бұрын
The title is asking the question is Argentina racist. The comment was outside of the bar. Also, you are missing the hypersexualization/fetishization of myself and the Afro-Argentine young woman.... 2 women trying to kiss and grab me up before they even asked my name....

@@KeenanLambert198 After WWII, Germans and Italian military officers moved to Argentina to hide and escape prosecution for war crimes. In videos from other KZbinrs, you can see the reluctance of people with interacting with them. One person was called the N word after not wanting to enter a bar after a soccer game. I met some people from Argentina when I was in Brazil. Two of the four people in the group were extremely friendly but the other two were not warm and I just blew them off. I have felt extreme apprehension about visiting Argentina. I had hoped to gain a better perspective from your video. This is why I expressed my disappointment.

@@KeenanLambert198this one is very much an older fixture. When I was growing up in Trinidad, my godmother, had one in her house. They were rich, and we thought it was real fancy of them. Today we have one in every bathroom in our house, but it's not a permanent fixture, rather an accessory that we bought and attached to the toilet. How do you know you’re not getting fake money, phony money you know is it at a risk?
@agme80454 ай бұрын
There isn’t counterfeit money in Argentina because the bills are low denominations and they are worth very little thanks to inflation. Economically speaking, it’s more expensive to make the counterfeit bills than the actual value of the bills. You should, however, be careful with the dollar bills, there are some fake USD bills going around in Argentina, but unless you exchange the money back you shouldn’t worry about it (or just do the exchange at a bank or official exchange)
