I would always go with a well regarded independent specialist over a main dealer and would actually prefer to see that in a service history because it shows the previous owner cared about the car enough to find the specialist.

I worked at a main dealer, not Lambo, but a prestige Marque, and the belief that all the staff are fully trained experts is a joke. A large amount of the mechanics were very good and knowledgeable, but the staff turn over ment they were getting rid of the older members, and replacing us with cheaper less experienced people. A few of the guys left and started their own businesses, and some went to smaller workshops. I retired thankfully. Don't worry about the resale value, keep it for years and just enjoy the car. Sod the future, you're a long time dead.

I heard same story from the guy working for a dealer of a popular brand. He said mechanics were paid a little bit more than a minimal wage. They were just running away as soon as they could when they had a chance. Morale was so low, low morale, low standards. He said stories about not changing oil filters and so on where customers were invoiced for services they were not getting. One big mess but this is how it is.

Yea I cannot agree more with you … when I started my first job at Paul miller bmw in New Jersey they had just made the senior bmw m tech retire because he was asking for 1$ raise he started working there years ago when $20 an hour was extreme this was 2010 when 20 bucks is nothing for a master tech and he was only making $26 while the other new guy he was training was already at 25 but lacked all the damn knowledge this older gentleman had so he left lucky for me he was my uncle and taught me everything he knew . It didn’t take them not 2 months before they started panicking no cars where getting done especially the higher end m cars work was piling up and what did they do call up my uncle paid him $10,000 advance and $37 bucks an hour they had called an engineer from Germany here to come help out and he didn’t know nothing until my uncle got there 2 weeks later we were all caught up my uncle and I did 2 motor swaps 1 complete harness replace with bcm and 8 rod bearing timing chain jobs with guides and all we then decided to quit together and he immediately opened his own shop he already had all the customers a lot of them from bmw contacted him directly and when we opened we had a whole lot full .. rip u cle Andy thank you for all u have done for me and letting me keep this shop going making m cars live longer especially those e60 m5’s one of bmw’s worst and best car ever produced

I once worked for a company that charged some of the lowest hourly rates in the business. They got a lot of work because of that. To make up for it they charged literally double the hours they actually spent doing jobs. Since the clients didn't keep a close watch on them they always got away with it. Administrative hourly costs were tacked onto the invoices as well. I saw the billing. Regarding the Lambo, I would consider what your long term plans for the car are. There are many that collect, drive and then flip the cars as a hobby, career etc. and there are certain rules that apply if you don't want to lose your shirt on the investment. This includes the condition the car is kept in, how many miles you put on it's clock, the number of services you have documented, and where you got those services done. I've heard these people talk about these things, but am not up on it myself, but it might matter 'where' you had work done if an when you decide to sell the car. As far as the quality of the work it's my opinion that some of the best mechanics in the business work in independent shops, that some of the worst work at the dealerships, dealerships being more of an entry level job for mechanics, at least in the US.

It's absolutely fair enough to make prices up, at least in the quoting stage. It's not really the customer's concern how many hours it actually takes to get the job done - especially if it is something non-trivial and also has a lot of unknowns going in. It's a known fact that dealers are expensive and not particularly honest, I don't think Lee really has much of a leg to stand on in this situation.

I used to work at a hydraulics shop. I was literally *shocked* when I first saw an invoice for my work (sales guys usually handled it). Over time I learned that the reason we cost so much was because we weren't taking the shortcuts other shops did and our work always went out the door and stayed in service, instead of coming back three months later. Farmers would rather pay $10,000 to have their equipment rebuilt once than pay $5000 and have it break down mid-harvest.

I'm glad you're going with the specialist. I knew a guy 20 years ago that got a job at a main dealer in the parts department & after a month working he walked into work one morning to be informed that that day the crew was betting on who could sell a part with the highest markup percentage that day. They did this once a month, he quit working there & the dealership was closed 1 year later. He also found that the service department would round up the hours on each part of the job. 45 minutes to change the oil would be 1 hour. And if they knew how to do a certain thing faster than the book estimate they would go with the book time so that if you complain about the time they show you the book. I'm not accusing Lamborghini of this but they sure sound iffy! Good luck with it Lee.

Should show you… Re your exhaust, sounds great 👍🏼 although I would highly recommend that you ask the guys to do one where you can press a button and can go quiet should you want/have to. Forget passing MOT. The louder it is the more you’ll attract negative attention and get pulled over. I've had a similar experience with my Ducati at a main dealer. it needed a new thermostat as it was faulty, pig of a job and a known fault on my bike and they've revised the part with a new part number. I simply asked for a price to do the job, he went around the houses and wouldn't give me a straight answer, eventually accusing me of trying to force a cheap deal! I phoned my next closest main dealer, they gave me a quote and within 2 minutes I was all booked in and had the work completed at a date that suited me. Well that dealer (Motorapido) has earned a new customer and I'll be returning in the spring for a service, my old dealer on the other hand has lost a customer for good.

It's a no-brainer: Independent. Once out of warranty, it comes down to trust and intuition as to whom you choose. I suspect that not only is it going to be cheaper, and fully itemized, but the quality of work will be higher too. But I'd go one step further: Make a video out of this, (your Independent willing) and alert news/social media that you are. It's not just Lamborghini playing this game. And it's not just exotic dealers/service shops either. It's rampant with the established mass production brands too. You're making excellent videos, Lee. Put out feelers to find some video assistants to work on this, and your own brand, and that of the Independent will more than pay back the costs in excellent publicity. It seems you're already doing the hardest part by documenting the numbers and making the case. I haven't read the rest of the comments, but my guess is that there's not one commenter stating 'stay with Lambi'.

Lee, I had the same dilemma. My issue wasn't an incompetent franchise dealer but the distance I needed to travel to get the car looked after by my preferred franchise outlet. This was brought on by a house move to a different area. A 320 mile round trip added significantly to the cost of the service. Having wrestled with the idea of going independent for 2 years, I bit the bullet. No regrets. An established specialist staffed by enthusiasts for the brand was booked. I specified what I wanted done and the fluids to be used. Parts were genuine. I requested an oil and filter change, gearbox oil change, coolant and brake fluid. I was called by the proprietor who said that coolant and brake fluids were fine and didn't require changing, but the a/c needed a re-gas. Like you, the mileage between services was diddly squat. The premises is an old fashioned workshop, no fripperies. But this is countered by the enthusiasm for the brand shown by the technicians. The service was no cheaper than the franchise dealer, but I had total confidence that I got exactly what the car needed, nothing more, nothing less. I have a 2009 Aston Martin Vantage 4.7, not quite as exotic as your Italian stallion. You won't regret going the specialist route.

The general public needs to understand the business model relationship between the manufacturers and the dealerships and the technician. It is all about profit, and profit growth on top of that. The techs don't get paid for non routine issues as defined by the manufacturer, so basically anything not a few years old comes with outside issues even as simple as stuck bolts or hard plastic clips that break. Furthermore, the dealers split the person you're paying vs the person doing the work vs the person recommending the work. This chaos represents half the service dept profit margin, and the ability to point fingers around the place keep the uniformed from pulling their business. Short version - Look at the shiney buildings to wonder if your getting value for your money. This brainwashing of the public is successfully killing the independents.

They say it’s happened since you drove away, I pointed out it was away 3 days and clocked up 20 miles, their faces dropped, best “offer” they would give me was to reduce the labour for the MOT work needed or rather not needed. . . 😕 I Drove down the road to another garage and it passed that day.

Getting comparative estimates for the same job in our industry today is like trying to compare insurance estimates for the same cover. Now you have an idea what retail customers go through everyday. Seldom is the estimate for the same scope of work.

In my early 20s ( I’m 51 ) I went to Cyprus on holiday and there was a Lacoste shop , I went in with an del trotter like attitude trying to knock the guy down on the price , and I’ve never forgotten his response…. Lacoste isn’t for everyone, your in business, look at the building the dealership is in , there commercial rates and coffee bill are probably more than you turn over in a year , either repair it yourself or sell it

You can see why a service would be so confusing to quote for. Such an irregular and rare thing for them to do I doubt there's any way they could pin it down.

I wouldn't worry about the potential difference in resale value at the age of your vehicle. As long as it has been serviced by a specialist shop with a good reputation. In some circumstances it may even increase the value if the specialist has a high enough reputation

'If'. there was a depreciation in market price due to no dealer service history I can't see what difference having the motor serviced by a reputable specialist. The service cost saving alone would more than cover any loss; what tosh ! by the dealer. ps excellent tech ' stuff on those studs.

With main dealers, they seem to charge according to what they feel they’d like to make, not for what has been done. And we all know that the estimator is not usually a mechanic. Specialist every time for fancy motors.

Having worked at Mazda, Honda and Chrysler dealers as a mechanic, i can say that all of those workshops had 1 or 2 mechanics and the rest where apprentices. those 1-2 mechanics are flat out running around doing their own work as well as having to help the apprentices. This would drag out jobs and also at time stuff jobs up as you forget to tighten something or forget to put a washer etc. Dealers cant be trusted and the quality of work at the best of times is sub par.

I think everyone recognises that specialists are often better for the cars' welfare and I can't think any dealer, when offered the car in future, will devalue it on that basis.

Lamborghini Talk has a guide to changing the pollen filters posted by a DIYer, sounds like a bit of a pain and time consuming because of the access difficulties but maybe that's not quite so bad if you do them regularly as a business and know what to expect.

Main stealers have always had a bad reputation, and always will, and just to get "that stamp" in the book, i wouldn't hesitate, in going to an Independent, and as said, they have to keep their reputation up, Main stealers just keep ripping customers off, and not interested in the rep

At 14 yearsold i doubt going to an indie is going to have real effect on the value. I think youve made the right decision i mean 3.8hrs is very precise.....i bet Lambo are just making it up i mean 5hrs for a brake fluid change???

It’s a 14 year old car. Main dealers, from my experience, have a constant turnover of staff who are only trained in the newest vehicles. Take the car to a marque specialist and give the car the care it deserves. Any buyer who knows their stuff will be happier to see a specialist stamp in the book from someone who really knows how to care for the car rather than the glitz of a main dealer. You know it makes sense.

A service is a service as long as it genuine parts fitted . I'm sure if you sold the car and the only reasons it wasn't serviced by a dealer was really because of the dealer but genuine parts were fitted. I reckon that would cut it

Once the car is out of manufacturer warranty my number one priority is a a service specialist i can TRUST. This applies especially to a car that requires expert maintenance. A well regarded independent is worth his weight in gold. You’ll find the people likely to buy your car if you ever choose to sell will likely already be aware of the specialist you use.

Send your discussion with your main dealer and your concerns to Lamborghini head office in Italy and let them know your displeasure. Main dealers need to be held to account if they are upsetting customers...the makers need to know these things as they award and review main dealerships.

I had 20 years and about 12 vehicles of company cars and the associated main stealer service(ing). The dealers were adequate at best, infuriatingly incompetent at worst. This all ended about the turn of the Millenium and I've had secondhand cars & repairs/maintenance by "local independent specialists" until last year, when I fell for the charms of the Toyota GR Four Yaris. My local/supplying dealer was next to useless on collection day, 3 hours of hanging around while they finalized the paperwork that had been in their possesion for 6 months! One year later and it's first service time, much confusion and front line staff ignorance re' the correct engine oil and a very unpleasant conversation in the waiting room about the fully to spec oil I had brought along having agreed this with the front line staff because I couldn't trust them to put the correct oil in! If it were not for that potential 10 year warranty I'd be taking it to my local JDM specialist for servicing.

I know from personal experience that managers at subsidiaries pull charges out of their bums, many times a charge will be added to the bill for no good reason. One of the main reasons for this is that Corporate have a vision of what kind of profit the subsidiary should be making and scream at the manager if it's not fulfilled.
