What I love about Ari is being able to watch him refine his style over the years. I've been listening to him since I was a teenager, and it seems to me that he has slowly but surely refined his style- making it more controlled, precise, and sophisticated, without ever losing that crazy spastic wildness thats always made him so fun to watch and listen to. A true beginners mind.

First off, Hoenig can swing (and does, see his arrangements of "Moanin'," "The Way You Look Tonight,"and his original "Birdless."). In fact, he can swing better than a lot of drummers who actually restrict themselves to pure bop playing. Hoenig explores other styles, and indeed, he doesn't always swing in those styles. That doesn't mean "it's all for nothing", it just means he has different goals for his music. I for one am glad he's pushing musical boundaries rather than only focusing on swing.
@Koropokel4 жыл бұрын
swing is a cliché of jazz. look at guiliana, nate smith, nate wood, brian blade, jojo meyer, benny greb, matt garstka and basically every famous modern drummer of the last 10 years, they all play mostly straight.
@Koropokel4 жыл бұрын
Oh and don't forget Chris Daddy Dave, basically since Herbie Hancock Jazz has been getting more and more straight.

I keep coming back to this live recording, but I wish the drum cameras weren't SOOOOO off time. Ari hits a cymbal and I only hear the sound 3 seconds afterwards. The guys are doing such a great job on this song, and I want the recording to show that. The visuals for the drums are simply off-time for the first 2 or 3 minutes. After that, it syncs up.

the head is in 11/16 , you can count it like one bar of 3/16 and then just a bar of 4/8 "123 1 2 3 4" That time sig continues throughout the whole solo sections and the little parts in between the head. The slower section alternates between 5/4 and 6/4,

0:37 can anyone explain those 3 snare hits ?
@SmallStamp8 жыл бұрын
+sr_gregorio I believe you're referring to the stick shots? That's something Ari likes to do. Essentially, his left hand is resting the stick against the head, while his right stick strikes the left one. It results in a higher pitched "pop" than a normal stroke, while being a bit more tame than a traditional rim shot.
@srgregorio18 жыл бұрын
