God damn ari’s playing ALWAYS makes me want to practice! His brush technique is so different and effective too, I talked to him about it sometime many sessions ago here at chris’. Glad to see this from y’all. Thanks!

My guitar instructor turned me onto Ari and his group as a study in rhythm / polyrhythms. Now I’m hooked and would love to make it to a live performance.

Éste tipo hace todas cosas difíciles en la batería. Sólo comparable a los más grandes de la historia (en mi opinión) Morgan Agren, Hubb Hansen y el capitán Kirk Kuvington.

He knows what sound he wants so he places his stick accordingly, this implies moving the whole arm in a perpendicular motion just to hit a cymbal lightly for example. Weird to look at but feels good doing/hearing it

I used to play jam sessions with him and my bass player in NY around like 2010-12 and he was freaking stealing the show back then!!! But has improved in his tastefulness I think. Ari always gets new young cats on his gigs it’s pretty cool.

Why the drums's sound is that of empty barrels?
@ChrisJazzCafePhilly
@ChrisJazzCafePhilly 2 жыл бұрын
The louder the drums are on stage the more bleed gets into piano and bass mics. The results are washier, less distinct, roomier sounding drums usually.

@@ChrisJazzCafePhilly I know but I just had the impression that there wasn't paid much attention to the tuning. In any case the bass drum sounded awful.

Some jazz, like this, just seems to be confusing/complicated just for the sake of complicated/confusing. It’s just irritating to listen to. Maybe that’s the point. Ugh

You realize jazz was created to be an expression of freedom, as in Afro-American people advocating their want for freedom through music, and you're here saying that they should play "normally" ... like what does that even mean. Jazz is freedom. You wanna listen to old jazz and cats playing like we did 50 years ago or more, feel free to not listen to this. Miles was already tired of jam sessions at the end of his career cuz same songs since the 40's and same songs still today played the same way...! At least they're doing something different... and they're darn great at it!!!
