The performance of Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa, is one of the greatests ever. What an amazing character. Terrific, classy and smart as hell.

The way Tarentino mixes comedy and suspense in this film is miraculous.

One thing that Tarantino does when writing these movies, is that he writes incredible detailed backstories for the characters and gives them to actors to help them shape the characters. Even if some of the information is only hinted at in the movies themselves. Like there is a scar on Aldo's neck and they never address it, but Brad Pitt will know what happened. One of the backstories about the Bear Jew involves the baseball bat he uses to kill Germans with. The character bought that bat in his hometown of Boston, and before he was shipped off to war, he took that bat to all of the Jewish families in his neighborhood. He asked them to write the names of any family members they had that were stuck in Europe on the bat, and you can see a little bit of the writing on the bat. One of the names on the bat was Anne Frank.

Yes, I agree. The farmhouse scene here, Royale with Cheese in Pulp Fiction and coin toss in No Country for Old Men are probably my favorite scenes in any films. Strange how they are all interrogation scenes of one type or another.

"The cream was important that's why they had to show us." There is a theory as to why the cream was so important in that scene. Hans knew that this was Shosanna and he wanted to torment her/see how far she was willing to go in to hide her identity. There is a process in which cream would have to be prepared in order for it to be kosher. The cream would've probably not been prepared in this way, so Hans insisted that she have some just to mess with her.

Great reaction Aria. Love this movie! There are some fun-facts about it. In the beginning of the movie when Landa is meeting the entire family he does something sneaky, when he is shaking their hands of the daughters, but if you look closer at his hands what he is really doing is checking their pulse to see who be nervous, this little details are awsome. And another fun-fact trivia. Since puff pastries (what strudels are) during WWII were made with pig lard (not Kosher) due to wartime butter shortage, Landa's choice of dish for Shosanna could be seen either as a test to see if she's Jewish (as she'd normally reject the food) or he knows who she is and is forcing her into eating non-kosher. And BTW congrats on figured it out the 3 fingers mistake most people didnt get it. The scene where Landa speaks Italian flawlessly and Aldo’s Tennessee accent radiates “Not Italian At All” energy is not how it was scripted. He was written to be extremely fluent and competent at it, but Brad Pitt convinced Tarantino to let him try it that way. In the end, Tarantino agreed that he shouldn’t blend in because, as he put it, “the plan they cobble together is fucking dumb.” It only succeeds because Landa wants it to succeed, it should not work… and the accent just rams home just how dumb the plan is. The character of Hans Landa was a stumbling block for him to get the movie made in the first place. He thought he’d written a character that no actor could play. He has to speak, in order, French, English, German, and Italian fluently, be charming and terrifying at the same time, and appear to be a brilliant detective, a nazi version of Sherlock Holmes (that’s why he has the large pipe in the first scene, it’s a reference to Holmes’ pipe). The scene where Landa chokes Von Hammersmark to death. Tarantino wanted the scene to appear very authentic. Typical Tarantino. So he was to actually choke the actress Diane Kruger, to the point of her almost passing out. The actor Christoph Waltz did not feel comfortable doing this. So Tarantino had to do the choking scene himself. So the hands you see are actually Tarantino's. Keep up the good work.

Landa grabs the wrist of each woman he meets to check their pulse to see if they have reason to be anxious. He also made Shoshana eat the cream on her strudel because they both knew its made with pork fat and she isnt allowed. He was playing with her by making her.

I know Tarantino let the survivor to meet with Hitler to show the mark the Basterds left on his forehead, but militaries of the world, including the US one I served for 20 years, remove their hats/covers while indoors. Even the Colonels talking to Hitler previous to that scene have their hats removed. It's a bit of poetic license to break some rules to get the dramatic effect of the reveal.

I'm not sure Zoller would have wanted Shoshanna at the same time Hitler was in the audience and knowing the importance of her having to change the film reels.

Two very subtle unspoken moved by Landa make him truely terrifying and awesome (instilling awe) at the same time. When he is with the farmers daughters, he grasps one daughter by the wrist for an usual amount of time and force. It's thought he's checking her pulse as he speaks as a human polygraph test Second, with Shoshanna in the Cafe, Landa insists for her to try the cream. Due to war shortages and rationing, cream would have been hard to come by so a common substitute was use rendered pork fat. So perhaps he was using this to test Shoshanna's reaction to eating pork product, a non kosher product

Fun facts: Brad Pitt, rockin' that accent, is from my home state of Oklahoma. :) Michael Fassbender, who plays Lt. Archie, is in fact German-Irish (playing a man having issues with a German accent). Quentin Tarantino's original choice to play lead villain Hans--- which won Christoph Waltz his first Oscar--- was DiCaprio! :D

Hi, Christoph Waltz's last name is pronounced a bit differently. The German "w" is pronounced like the English "v" and the "a" like the "a" in "car". So the beginning of his name sounds like the beginning of the word "vulture". Btw. I'm Austrian just like Mr. Waltz, so you can trust me on this. 🙂

Hello Aria C, How was your day? 🙋🏻♂️👋🏻 This movie is controversial for its sexual scenes, even in my country the explicit sexual scenes were censored because people said they were unnecessary and uncomfortable. In 2019, its uncensored versions were released in its digital versions in my country! What do you think Aria C?

New to Tarantino? He'd conceived this with the idea of the plan being foolish and destined to fail. Hence, clownish. And, no way, Tarantino created violence? Such a departure from his style.
