2:25 These are my feelings EXACTLY, I am not hispanic but in spanish class people fail at pronunciation. Spanish is easy to speak (though I cannot roll my Rs), and when people can't figure out what sounds to make as they are reading out loud, I kinda question the ability to read.

“If I correct other people’s Spanish, I am often met with a laugh and the occasional “I’m white” as if that was any excuse to be anything but sorry”
@redxraccoon10 жыл бұрын
I love her poems so much, she speaks so eloquently, and I understand the frustration she must feel when people butcher her language and then laugh it off BUT I have a right to my skin colour too. There was one sentence that fully raised my hackles. Being white does not equal having to be sorry. I have never set foot in America or Mexico, and neither have any of my ancestors in the history of human beings. I am a New Zealander and we have a culture of our very own - I don't belong to "White" culture, because there is no such thing as white culture. I wish I could just live my life and meet people with a friendly smile without worrying "oh, they're not white, I'd better be extra careful to not be white too." Teach acceptance of all, not acceptance of one at the expense of another.
@arianabrown43089 жыл бұрын
+redxraccoon no
@lentil.lover265 жыл бұрын
She literally didn’t say that. She meant that the white AMERICANS who butcher these pronunciations say “I’m white” instead of “i’m sorry”, and that’s disgusting. This is not about you.
@munchymunster10 жыл бұрын
Ummm why cant i write like this?
@christinagabriel648610 жыл бұрын
so it's okay to speak English with a Spanish accent, but speaking Spanish with a "white" accent is being disrespectful? (not trying to hate, this was a beautiful poem)
@jarolrivera64010 жыл бұрын
What's a 'white accent'? Caucasian are a race not an ethnicity!
@christinagabriel648610 жыл бұрын
Jarol Rivera that's why I put it in quotations, but to be clear, I was referencing the part of the poem where she's upset about people mispronouncing the Spanish street names and then saying "I'm white" when they're told it was mispronounced.
@22bronwyn2210 жыл бұрын
This poem is good. But Spanish is a colonel language. There are very few native South Americans because the Spanish killed them all.
@arianabrown430810 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct; Spanish is certainly not the original tongue of my ancestors. But it has become a very important part of our culture & history & identity. For that reason, my relationship to the language is very important to me.
@BlackFeather71310 жыл бұрын
Not at all, native languages in mexico are still thriving, all over northern south america as well. Even if Spanish conquered Latin America, the cultures blended. Not much can be said about north america though....
