Lennon's version was, in my opinion, more of the ideal world, a world where people don't need to be afraid of what they are and where there is unity and love among all of us. I always come back to this live performance, because even though I love the studio version and I'm not a big fan of the arrangement here (no shade to the Roots though), I love what Ariana does while the song goes out. The original just has her ambiently speak the final "imagine" parts, while here she belts it out with the peppy horn and sax as a background, like it's building up to something, but the last "imagine" almost like the song is cut, like a desperate plea. It's so abrupt, and sad, and amazing.
